When IDW announced its latest Star Trek comic, The Last Starship, much of the focus was on the fact that the series would, somehow, resurrect Captain James T. Kirk for a story set in the 31st-century timeline introduced in Star Trek: Discovery. Now the series is here; the premise is much more than nostalgia for the original Trek captain but instead a fascinating way to explore not one but two different major plotlines developed in contemporary Star Trek‘s streaming age—ideas that Star Trek largely abandoned on TV. The first issue of The Last Starship—written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, with art by Adrian Bonilla…

Nina Raemont/ZDNETZDNET’s key takeawaysOura Ring 4 users report shorter battery life. The claims come a year after its debut. Oura seems to be quickly responding to this issue. When Oura unveiled its fourth-generation smart ring last October, its eight-day battery life was a major draw for those upgrading from the Oura Ring 3. But a year after its release, it seems like that eight-day battery claim is weakening. Reddit users on the r/ouraring forum report that their smart rings aren’t holding a charge, only lasting a few days before dying. Others say that the battery is completely shot and unrevivable. “I went from probably a…
When I was invited to attend Huawei Connect in Shanghai, as well as have a tour of its Ox Horn research and design center in Shenzhen, I didn’t really know what to expect.I knew Huawei makes phones ( I used to have one), and 5G equipment, but I didn’t really know about any of its other products or what its products really do.I expected to learn more about 5G and the company’s cloud products – but I didn’t expect to be sitting in a Huawei Maextro listening to The Weeknd, watching robotic arms serve porridge, or lusting after foldable phones…

“Houston’s disappointment in not being selected is wholly understandable,” the four senators wrote, “but removing an item from the National Collection is not a viable solution.” In July, Cornyn and Cruz successfully added language to the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” championed by President Donald Trump, which enabled acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy to then identify Discovery for relocation. The provision also called for $85 million to be made available to transport and display the shuttle in Houston. “There are also profound financial challenges associated with this transfer,” wrote Kelly. Warner, Kaine, and Durbin. “The Smithsonian estimates that transporting Discovery…
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) showing the electrical schematics for the iPhone 16e, despite Apple specifically requesting them to be confidential. This was most likely a mistake on the part of the FCC, .The agency also distributed a cover letter from Apple alongside the schematics, which is dated September 16, 2024. This letter verifies the company’s request for privacy, indicating that the documents contain “confidential and proprietary trade secrets.” The cover letter asks for the documents to be withheld from public view “indefinitely.” Apple even suggested that a release of the files could give competitors an “unfair advantage.”To that end,…
The Department of Energy has instituted a long list of banned words at the direction of a Trump appointee, including some that many would consider politically neutral. The “words to avoid” were sent in an email to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) on Friday, according to Politico, which saw the memo. “Please ensure that every member of your team is aware that this is the latest list of words to avoid,” EERE special advisor Rachael Overbey wrote. The terms staffers are forbidden from using include: climate change, green, decarbonization, energy transition, sustainability, sustainable, subsidies, tax breaks,…
Over the past weekend at the Tokyo Game Show, GameSir demonstrated a new controller that turns your smartphone into a Game Boy. Unlike the company’s GameSir G8 Plus that offers similar functionality by clamping on to the top and bottom of a phone turned sideways recreating the ergonomics of the Nintendo Switch, this new controller is much smaller and keeps the phone vertical. GameSir didn’t make any formal announcements of what the accessory is called, what it will cost, compatibility, or when it will be released.Although the accessory is visible in the background of a photo GameSir shared of its…
For more than 50 years, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center used the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (SSHWS) to classify hurricane strength. This scale, which ranks hurricanes from Category 1 to Category 5, is based on only one metric: maximum sustained wind speed. That wasn’t always the case. Until 2012, the SSHWS also took central pressure and storm surge into account, but the NHC eliminated these factors to reduce public confusion. The trouble is, rising global temperatures are exacerbating multiple hurricane hazards, not just wind speed. In recent years, exceptionally intense storms, such as Milton, Patricia, and Typhoon Haiyan, have…
