In June, Spider-Man fans learned that one of the character’s most enduring cliffhangers was finally going to get resolved. But if you’ve been wondering since 1998 how Peter Parker managed to reunite with MJ, whose whereabouts were unknown when Spider-Man: The Animated Series concluded, it seems the new comic Spider-Man ’94 isn’t going to get into the gritty details just yet.

How’s that again? Well, the Marvel Comics press release announcing the comic teased, “After searching to the ends of the Multiverse, Peter Parker swings back into the streets of New York City with his beloved Mary Jane Watson in tow!” and that “legendary Spider-Scribe J.M. DeMatteis and rising star artist Jim Towe bring you the return you’ve all been waiting 30 years for!”

So it didn’t actually say we’d learn how Peter found MJ or what it took to bring her back. And fans of X-Men ’97 will recall MJ had a cameo in the finale, so we already knew she (not her clone this time) had made it back somehow.

Speaking to CBR.com, DeMatteis offered some clarification on what readers can expect. Rather than jumping into the action right after The Animated Series ended, the story explored in Spider-Man ’94 will pick up sometime after the fact.

“We learn that Peter has gone to hell and back in order to bring MJ home, that they’ve had an incredible, harrowing adventure along the way, but we don’t get into the details,” the writer explained. “As our story opens, they’re home and ready to begin a new life together.”

However, before anyone starts screaming about that approach being a cop-out, he did add this: “That said, if this mini does well, we can double back and find out exactly what happened in the next one.”

Spider-Man ’94 #1 arrives September 3. Will you be reading to see what this version of the web-slinger gets up to next?
