Meta said it will start using people’s interactions with its generative AI tools to personalize content and ads on Facebook and Instagram beginning December 16, with notifications rolling out October 7 [reuters.com#3][engadget.com#7][pcmag.com#11]. Users can’t opt out of this change, which applies to those who use Meta AI, though sensitive topics won’t be used for ad targeting [reuters.com#3][techinasia.com#10]. The rollout will exclude the UK, the EU, and South Korea at launch [reuters.com#3][slashdot.org#2].

    Highlights:

    • What changes: AI conversations by voice or text will join existing signals (likes, follows) to shape recommendations for Reels and ads across Meta apps [reuters.com#3][pcmag.com#11].
    • No opt-out: There is no way to opt out; the only way to prevent this use is to avoid Meta AI features [reuters.com#3][macrumors.com#4][techinasia.com#10].
    • Regional limits: The update starts December 16 in most regions but excludes the UK, the EU, and South Korea at first; user notifications begin October 7 [reuters.com#3][engadget.com#7].
    • Sensitive topics: Meta says it won’t use conversations about topics like religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, or race/ethnicity to target ads [reuters.com#3][theregister.com#12].
    • Broader inputs: Meta may also use data from other AI offerings, including Ray‑Ban Meta smart glasses, its AI video feed Vibes, and image tool Imagine, tied to the same account [slashdot.org#2].

People's interactions simply are going to be another piece of the input that will inform the personalization of feeds and ads – Christy Harris

    Perspectives:

    • Meta (privacy policy manager Christy Harris): Interactions with Meta AI will be one more input to personalize feeds and ads across Meta apps. (Reuters)
    • Meta (spokesperson Emil Vazquez): The update extends beyond Meta AI to other AI offerings, potentially including data from Ray‑Ban Meta smart glasses, Vibes, and Imagine. (Slashdot)
