Polymarket to Open Bar Full of Screens

The prediction market app Polymarket says on Friday it will open a bar in Washington, D.C. called “the Situation Room.” An X post indicates that the name is tied to the “monitoring the situation” meme, and not a hint that Polymarket executives are huge fans of Wolf Blitzer.

We’re excited to announce ‘The Situation Room’ by Polymarket is coming to Washington, D.C.

“Imagine a sports bar… but just for situation monitoring — live X feeds, flight radar, Bloomberg terminals, and Polymarket screens,” another X post says. Are you imagining that yet? Is it making you want to go wet your whistle?

You may remember Polymarket’s stunt from last month, when it opened a grocery store popup in New York City called “the Polymarket” and mostly just gave free groceries to 300 people per day for a few days. This was either meant to be a brutal takedown of New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to open a handful of city-owned grocery stores, or, since it helped demonstrate the desire among New Yorkers to get some relief from overpriced groceries, maybe it was an attempt to prove his point for him?

But a better reference point might be another recent high-concept sports bar in Washington, D.C., Political Pattie’s, which opened in 2024, and was set up around the theme of bipartisanship. Political Pattie’s generated heated posts online, but apparently next to no revenue, and promptly closed after 75 days in business.

I hate to say it, but Polymarket’s Situation Room is an intriguing concept—reminiscent of sitting in any bar in any airport in the world, where there’s also a lot of flight information and TV news text scrolling by. But what have we all been doing in bar airports for the last 20 years? Unless our favorite sport happened to be on, the answer has been staring at our phones. More often than not for me, that’s meant news sites and social media, and, yes, basically acting like a monitoring the situation guy.

I can imagine a genuinely useful version of this bar that’s a kind of methadone for my own information addiction. I can imagine a place full of other people just as hopelessly addicted to doomscrolling as me, but we’re all looking up at the info screens instead of our phones, and also at one another.

I can imagine a lot of nice things, but are they anything like what Polymarket will execute with the grand opening of the Situation Room? I wouldn’t bet on it.
