Amazon October Prime Day (also known as Prime Big Deal Days) begins in two days for October 7th and 8th, but there are a bunch of discounts already available across Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and other retailers. Luckily, this means that you can take advantage of deals and discounts before everyone hops online to fill their carts this week. One item on sale right now is the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet, which is currently 54% off at only $65.

It’s not always easy to discern what tech items are suitable for kids. From GPS to Gemini, it can be tough to tell what devices are okay for kids versus ones specifically designed with them in mind. However, we totally stand behind the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet, and it’s currently over 50% off at just $65.

Read the review: Parent and ZDNET writer Maria Diaz went hands-on with the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro

This tablet is designed specifically for kids aged 6-12 and has 3GB of memory, a 13-hour battery, and an eight inch HD screen. Our experts rated it the best kids’ tablet for little kids for many reasons including its colorful and kid-proof case “built to withstand the drops and bumps, and an adjustable stand so your kids can go hands-free.” Other perks of this tablet include a free one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ and an Amazon FreeTime Unlimited subscription, which “grants access to thousands of kid-friendly, ad-free books, movies, games, and other educational content.”

One particularly great aspect of the tablet is its customization capabilities to suit kids of all ages. The home screen can be set to a “younger” or “older kid” theme, which allows younger users to see bigger icons and older kids to get more used to the formatting of a traditional tablet. A Parent Dashboard is password or PIN protected, though you can also use the parental controls from the Amazon Kids+ mobile app to access history data, change themes or age filters, set timers, and add or remove apps.

The main camera on the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Tablet is also 2MP and can record up to 720p video.

In her review, Maria Diaz verifies that Amazon has made a tablet “strong enough to survive the trials and tribulations of the rowdiest of kids,” and notes that each Fire tablet comes with a 2-year warranty for free replacements should an accident happen. While it’s not the fastest tablet available, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids tablet is built to endure, and would make a great holiday gift for little ones–especially at this price.

    How I rated this deal

The Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet isn’t as fast as an iPad, and it’s not even the latest edition of the Fire HD tablet series. Still, it’s a quality device for under $70 and over 50% off, and I think it’s earned a 5 out of 5 rating.

We’re not sure exactly how long this promotion will last, but it probably won’t be for very long. As holiday shopping starts to ramp up, kid-centered tech is sure to sell out, so this is not a deal to sleep on. Deals are subject to sell out or expire anytime, though ZDNET remains committed to finding, sharing, and updating the best product deals for you to score the best savings. Our team of experts regularly checks in on the deals we share to ensure they are still live and obtainable. We’re sorry if you’ve missed out on this deal, but don’t fret — we’re constantly finding new chances to save and sharing them with you at ZDNET.com.
