YouTube Music Now Labels AI Songs. Deezer Wants to Let You Hide Them Entirely.

Open a streaming app today and you cannot tell, by ear alone, whether a song was written by a band or assembled from a prompt. This week two services tried to fix that in very different ways. YouTube Music started labeling tracks made with generative AI, and Deezer said it is building a switch that removes AI music from your results altogether.

    The short version

    • YouTube Music now shows an AI label on the player page, and the same labels extend to the main YouTube app
    • Tracks fall into three buckets: Fully Gen AI, Partly Gen AI or No Gen AI
    • Deezer says a filter toggle will arrive before the end of the year
    • Deezer reports that more than 50% of daily uploads are now AI-generated, around 90,000 tracks a day

How the YouTube Music labels work

YouTube announced the rollout on Wednesday. The label sits on the player page, and tapping it explains what role AI played in the track. That detail matters, because “made with AI” can mean a fully synthetic song or a human recording with an AI-written bridge.

Partners who deliver music to YouTube can declare AI use themselves through one of three designations. YouTube also says it worked with music partners and runs its own detection tools to catch tracks that were not declared.

    DesignationWhat it covers
Fully Gen AITracks generated entirely by AI
Partly Gen AIArtists used AI-generated components, such as composition or vocals, and added their own live elements
No Gen AINo generative AI involved. Pitch correction such as Auto-Tune still counts here

The Auto-Tune carve-out is a sensible line to draw. Pitch correction has been standard studio practice for decades, and labeling it as AI would have made the whole system noisy.

    Label, not a ban

YouTube is choosing disclosure over restriction. AI involvement alone does not make a track ineligible for monetization, and YouTube even offers its own AI music tool, Dream Track, which lets select creators generate soundtracks with AI versions of participating artists’ voices.

    Why Deezer is going further

Deezer has been the loudest voice on this problem, partly because it has the data. When it launched AI detection, AI-generated tracks made up about 10% of daily uploads. By July the company said that share had passed 50%, averaging 90,000 tracks per day. In other words, the platform now receives more machine-made songs than human ones every single day.

Deezer already labels detected AI music, keeps it out of algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, and withholds royalties from fraudulent streams. The new toggle goes a step beyond that. Once enabled, AI-generated tracks, albums and related artists disappear from search results.

CEO Alexis Lanternier framed it as a response to demand, pointing to a survey from last year in which around 45% of Deezer customers said they wanted a way to remove AI music from their feeds. His words: users should be able to “focus only on human creators and creations, if they wish.”

Every major service, side by side

There is no industry standard yet. Each service has drawn its own line, and the differences are bigger than they look at first glance.

    ServiceApproach to AI music
YouTube MusicLabels on the player page. Disclosure only, monetization still possible
DeezerLabels, no recommendations, no royalties for fraud, filter toggle due by year end
SpotifyAI labels, a music spam filter, and tagging of AI persona profiles
Apple Music“Made With AI” labels planned as part of AI Transparency Tags later this year
TidalLabels fully AI tracks, lets listeners disable them, excludes them from royalties
BandcampBanned AI-generated music from the platform

What this means if you just want to listen

For now, the practical picture is mixed. If you use YouTube Music, you will get more information but no way to hide anything. If you want control, Deezer and Tidal are the services moving in that direction, and Bandcamp offers the cleanest guarantee because AI tracks are banned outright.

The labels also raise a fairness question for artists. A “Partly Gen AI” tag could sit on a record where a human did nearly all the work, and listeners may read it as a warning. That is why the click-through explanation from YouTube is more important than the badge itself.

The bigger fight behind the labels

Labels are the visible part of a larger argument about who gets paid. The music industry is also fighting over how models are trained, as in the case where Sony and Warner Chappell sued Anthropic’s founders by name and asked for $150,000 per song. On the technical side, invisible marking is another route to transparency, which we covered when OpenAI started hiding a watermark in ChatGPT text in the EU. And synthetic voices are already a real business, as the story of ElevenLabs doubling its value to $22 billion shows.

    What to watch next

    • Deezer’s toggle. It is promised before the end of 2026, and how well the detection works will decide whether it is useful
    • Apple Music’s tags. Apple has not yet launched its AI Transparency Tags, so the largest remaining gap may close soon
    • Monetization rules. Whether YouTube keeps paying AI tracks as volumes climb is the question that will shape artist income

The big shift is that every service now accepts the problem exists. The remaining disagreement is how much of the decision should belong to the listener.
