This Privacy Policy explains what personal information GeekBlog.net collects when you visit the site, why we collect it, who we share it with and what control you have over it. It applies to geekblog.net and to every page and feature on it. It does not apply to any third party site you reach by following a link from here.
Our use of cookies and similar technologies is described separately in the Cookie Policy, which forms part of this document.
1. Who we are
GeekBlog.net is an independent technology news and reviews publication. For the purposes of the European Union General Data Protection Regulation, the operator of GeekBlog.net is the controller of the personal data described here. You can reach us at any time at contact@geekblog.net.
2. The short version
- You can read the entire site without giving us your name or your email address.
- We do not sell your personal information for money.
- We use analytics to understand which articles are read, and advertising partners to fund the site.
- We ask for your email address only if you choose to write to us or to subscribe to something.
- You can ask us to show you, correct or delete what we hold, by writing to the address above.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Information you give us
- Correspondence. Your name, email address and the contents of your message when you email us, send a tip, report an error or make a legal or privacy request.
- Comments. The name, email address and website you type into a comment form, together with the comment text, your IP address and your browser user agent string. The last two are used for spam detection.
- Newsletter. Your email address, if you subscribe, plus the date of your consent and basic delivery statistics such as whether a message was opened.
- Uploads. Any file you send us. If you upload an image, please strip embedded location data (EXIF GPS) first, because that data travels with the file.
3.2 Information collected automatically
- Server logs. Your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested, the referring URL, your user agent and the response status. These are recorded by our host and by our security layer.
- Device and usage data. Browser type and version, operating system, approximate location derived from your IP address at country or city level, screen size, language, pages viewed, time on page and scroll depth.
- Cookies and identifiers. Small files and similar technologies stored on your device, described in the Cookie Policy.
We do not knowingly collect special categories of data such as health, biometric, religious or political information, and we ask that you do not send such information to us.
4. Why we use it, and our legal basis

Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time, and that does not affect the lawfulness of anything done before you withdrew it.
5. Advertising and analytics partners
The site is free to read because advertising pays for it. To make that work we use third party services that may set cookies or read identifiers in your browser.
- Analytics. Google Analytics, used to count visits and understand which articles are read. Google’s practices are described in its own privacy policy.
- Advertising. Google and other advertising technology partners, which may use cookies and device identifiers to select and measure ads. Third party vendors, including Google, may serve ads based on your prior visits to this or other websites.
- Affiliate networks. Programs such as the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, which use tracking parameters or cookies to attribute a purchase to a referral from this site.
- Infrastructure. Our hosting provider, our content delivery and caching layer, and our security and malware scanning services, all of which process request data in order to serve and protect the site.
You can opt out of personalised Google advertising in Google Ads Settings, and out of a wider set of vendors through the Network Advertising Initiative and Digital Advertising Alliance opt out pages. Links and detail are given in the Cookie Policy. Opting out does not remove advertising, it makes it less relevant.
6. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not trade mailing lists. We share data only in these situations:
- Service providers acting on our instructions, such as our host, our email delivery provider, our analytics provider, our security and anti spam services and our advertising partners.
- Spam filtering. Comments and the metadata attached to them may be checked by an automated spam detection service.
- Legal requirements. Where disclosure is required by law, by a court order or by a lawful request from a public authority, or where it is necessary to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim, or to protect the rights and safety of our readers or of the site.
- Business transfer. If the site is sold or merged, data may pass to the acquirer, who would remain bound by this policy until it publishes its own.
If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email.
7. International transfers
Some of our providers process data outside the country in which you live, including in the United States. Where personal data of readers in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom is transferred outside that area, we rely on an adequacy decision or on the European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses, together with the additional safeguards our providers apply.
8. How long we keep it
- Email correspondence: up to 24 months after the matter is closed, or longer where a legal claim may arise.
- Comments and their metadata: for as long as the comment remains published, so that follow up comments from the same person can be recognised and approved automatically.
- Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe, plus a short suppression record so that we do not email you again by mistake.
- Server and security logs: typically up to 12 months, and longer for an entry connected to an ongoing security investigation.
- Analytics data: according to the retention setting of the analytics service, which is capped at 14 months.
- Registered accounts, where they exist: for as long as the account is active. A user can view, edit or delete their profile information at any time, apart from the username.
9. How we protect it
The site is served over encrypted HTTPS connections. We run a web application firewall and malware scanning, we keep the platform and its components patched, we restrict administrative access to a small number of accounts protected by strong credentials, and we do not process or store payment card data on this site at all.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach that is likely to result in a risk to your rights, we will notify the competent supervisory authority and, where required, the people affected, without undue delay.
10. Your rights
10.1 If you are in the EEA or the United Kingdom
You have the right to access your data and receive a copy of it, to have inaccurate data corrected, to have data erased, to restrict or object to processing (including profiling for direct marketing), to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.
10.2 If you are in California
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, used, disclosed and shared, the right to delete it, the right to correct it, the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for cross context behavioural advertising, the right to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.
We do not sell personal information for money. The use of advertising cookies on this site may nonetheless count as “sharing” for cross context behavioural advertising under that law. You can opt out through the advertising controls described in the Cookie Policy, or by emailing us with the subject line “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information”. An authorised agent may submit a request on your behalf with written proof of authorisation.
10.3 Other United States privacy laws
Residents of other states with comprehensive privacy statutes, including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Texas, have comparable rights of access, correction, deletion, portability and opt out of targeted advertising. We handle those requests through the same address.
10.4 Making a request
Email contact@geekblog.net and tell us what you want us to do. We answer within 30 days, and we will tell you if we need longer. We may ask for information that lets us verify that the request really comes from you, and we may decline a request that is manifestly unfounded, excessive or repetitive. There is no charge for a reasonable request.
11. Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track
We honour the Global Privacy Control signal where your browser or extension sends one, and we treat it as an opt out of the sharing of personal information for targeted advertising. Because there is still no common industry standard for the older Do Not Track header, we do not respond to it separately.
12. Children
This site is written for a general adult audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, or under the higher minimum age that applies in some countries. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to contact@geekblog.net and we will delete it promptly.
13. Links to other sites
Our articles link to and embed content from services we do not control, such as video players, social posts and retailer pages. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other site directly: it can set cookies, embed further tracking and monitor your interaction with it. Their privacy policies, not ours, govern what they do.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it last changed, and the version published here is the one in force. Where a change materially affects how we use your data, we will make that clear on the site.
