In early February 2026, Elon Musk wrote on X that he came to my senses and declined to go to Jeffrey Epstein’s private island. The comment came days after the US Justice Department released millions of pages of Epstein records, including emails in which Musk and Epstein discussed a possible island visit in 2012 and 2013. This explainer sets out what the official records show, what Musk has said about them, and what remains unknown.

Quick answer: Emails in the Justice Department release of January 30, 2026 show Musk and Epstein discussing a trip to Epstein’s island, Little St. James, in late 2012 and again in late 2013, with plans that were canceled or did not go ahead. The released emails do not show that Musk ever visited the island. Musk says he never went, that he declined repeated invitations and that he eventually blocked Epstein. He has not been charged with or accused of any crime connected to Epstein.

    Where the emails came from

Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November 2025, and President Donald Trump signed it the same month. The law required the Justice Department to publish unclassified records related to Epstein. On January 30, 2026, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced a release of more than 3 million pages, including about 180,000 images and more than 2,000 videos, bringing the total published under the law to roughly 3.5 million pages.

The records include correspondence between Epstein and many well known people. Appearing in the files is not evidence of wrongdoing, and many of the people named were never accused of any crime.

What the released emails show about Musk

Musk’s name appears in more than a dozen emails with Epstein from 2012 and 2013. Based on the released documents, the exchanges went roughly like this:

10 Best Automatic Cat Feeders for 2026: Smart, Microchip and Wet Food

    • Fall 2012: the two men exchanged friendly messages after a conversation, and Epstein asked about solar power for his properties. Musk, then chairman of SolarCity, replied that the company only served major US markets.
    • November 2012: Musk asked which day or night would have the wildest party on the island, and the two discussed a helicopter transfer, with Musk expecting to bring Talulah Riley, his wife at the time.
    • December 2012: Musk wrote that after the holidays he wanted to go out to the party scene in St. Barts rather than have a quiet island stay.
    • January 2013: a planned lunch in St. Barts was canceled on the day, with Musk citing illness.
    • Early 2013: emails show plans for Epstein to visit SpaceX for lunch. The records do not make clear whether the meeting took place.
    • December 2013: Musk asked about visiting over the Caribbean holidays, Epstein offered to send a helicopter, and Epstein then canceled, saying he had to stay in New York.

None of the released emails confirm that a visit to the island happened.

What Musk has said, in order

    WhenWhat Musk said
2019In an interview, he said Epstein repeatedly tried to get him to visit the island and that he declined.
September 2025After House Oversight Committee Democrats released Epstein estate calendars with a December 2014 entry asking whether a Musk island trip was still happening, he called the reports false and said he had refused to go.
After the January 2026 releaseIn X posts, he wrote that he had never been to any Epstein parties, that he had very little correspondence with Epstein and that he knew some emails could be misinterpreted.
Early February 2026In an exchange with Reid Hoffman, he wrote that he came to his senses and declined to go, and that Epstein invited him so many times that he blocked him.

Musk has also said the real test of justice is whether people who committed crimes with Epstein are prosecuted, rather than the release of documents itself. He did not name anyone in that post.

    The exchange with Reid Hoffman

The came to my senses line came during a public argument on X with LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman, whose own contacts with Epstein also appear in the records. Musk wrote that the difference between them was that Hoffman had gone to the island and he had not. He added that the emails showed he did not expect anything improper, because he planned to bring his wife, and wrote, in capital letters for the first part, unlike you, I came to my senses and declined to go.

Hoffman has said he knew Epstein only through fundraising for the MIT Media Lab, that he very much regrets that relationship, and that he regrets helping Epstein try to repair his reputation after his conviction.

Watch out: many screenshots of the Epstein emails circulating on social media are cropped, retyped or stripped of dates. If you want to judge a claim for yourself, look for the original document in the Justice Department release rather than relying on a reposted image.

Context: who Epstein was and what is not known

Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to state charges that included procuring a minor for prostitution. He was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 and died in federal custody in August 2019 before trial.

Several questions remain open based on the public record. The emails show planning and invitations, but they do not establish whether Musk and Epstein met in person on any of the discussed dates, and the 2014 calendar entry does not show whether any trip took place. Musk disputes that any visit happened, and no official body has stated otherwise.

    FAQ

Did Elon Musk visit Epstein’s island?

The released records do not show that he did, and Musk says he never went. The emails show discussions about possible visits in 2012 and 2013 that were canceled or did not go ahead.

What did Musk mean by came to my senses?

Musk used the phrase while arguing with Reid Hoffman, saying he declined to go to the island. He has not explained the phrase in more detail beyond saying Epstein kept inviting him and he eventually blocked him.

Has Musk been accused of a crime related to Epstein?

No. Musk has not been charged with or accused of any crime connected to Epstein, and appearing in the files does not by itself indicate wrongdoing.

Where can I read the documents?

The Justice Department published the records on its website under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

    The verdict

The official records show that Musk and Epstein discussed island visits in 2012 and 2013, and that those plans did not go ahead as far as the documents reveal. Musk says he declined and never went, and nothing in the released files shows otherwise. His came to my senses remark is his own description of that decision, made during a public dispute in February 2026.
