After months of getting drip-fed info on who’ll be joining the cast of Amazon’s upcoming God of War Ragnarok TV show, Sony Pictures and Prime Video have finally unveiled a first look at Kratos and Atreus.
In contrast to Prime Video’s first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, God of War‘s first look doesn’t go the route of costume check and instead opts to put Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson out into the field as Dad and Boy on their first hunt. And, as far as first looks go, they definitely look like they were lifted right out of Santa Monica Studio’s PlayStation game. But one thing that’s especially neat for gamers to see is that Hurst, taking on the role of the cue-ball god-killer, played Thor in God of War: Ragnarok. As far as casting goes, he really took to Kratos like water. Time will tell if he’s got the chops to play the gruff dad when the show premieres. Callum’s Atreus, lacking the more buzzcut look of his video game counterpart, leaves a bit to be desired, but what’ll really be the proving point for him is his levels of sass at his dad’s style of parenting.

As far as the plot of the TV series goes, it appears to be a mash-up of both Santa Monica’s God of War games, in which the pair embark on an odyssey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ deceased wife, Faye. Along the way, Kratos will attempt to raise his son to be a better god than he was, while Atreus teaches his dear old dad not to close his heart to becoming a better person. Typical father-son activities.
All we’ve yet to see is what the rest of the cast will look like as their characters. The cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. So, for the time being, we’ll just have to use our imaginations to guess what they’ll look like.
God of War is the latest in a slew of video game adaptations that Prime Video has been cornering the market on, including Fallout. Here’s hoping the show finds just as much success as Fallout did in its first season whenever it debuts on the streamer.
