Most of us have a drawer, a glovebox or a coat pocket full of faded paper receipts we swear we will need someday. Google thinks your phone should be that drawer. The October update to Google Play Services, version 26.40, adds the ability to scan receipts and save them in Google Wallet.

It is a genuinely useful idea, and it arrives alongside three smaller Wallet changes. The catch is that Google described the headline feature in exactly one line of release notes: “With the new update to Wallet, you can now scan to add receipts.” There is no blog post, no support page and no word on which receipts it understands. So here is what we actually know, what is still a guess and how to tell whether your phone has it yet.

Quick answerGoogle Play Services v26.40, dated October 12, 2026, brings four Google Wallet changes to Android phones: receipt scanning, an in-app message center, clearer merchant names in transaction notifications and a faster Google Pay checkout in Chrome for Android. It rolls out automatically over the next few weeks. Google has not said which countries or receipt types are supported. It is a Google Wallet feature only, so Samsung Wallet does not get it.

    The four changes in v26.40

Play Services is the layer of Google software that sits underneath Android and updates through the Play Store rather than through big system updates. That is why Wallet can pick up new tricks on a Pixel, a Galaxy or a Motorola at the same time, without waiting for the phone maker. This month’s release, first spotted by Android Police and Droid Life, has a Wallet section with four entries, all tagged for phones.

Four Google Wallet changes in Google Play Services v26.40 Receipt scanning: scan paper receipts into Wallet. Message center: a new inbox inside the Wallet app. Merchant names: clearer names in transaction notifications. Faster checkout: Google Pay in Chrome for Android can skip the Payment Request screen when sharing name, email and phone. What Google Play Services v26.40 adds to Wallet Release notes dated October 12, 2026. All four changes are for phones. 1 Receipt scanning Scan a paper receipt with your camera and keep it in Google Wallet. 2 In-app message center A new inbox inside Wallet. Google has not said what it will show you. 3 Clearer merchant names Transaction notifications should show who you paid, not a cryptic processor code. 4 Faster Chrome checkout Google Pay can skip the Payment Request screen when sharing your contact details.
Receipt scanning gets the headlines, but the merchant name fix may be the one you notice most often.

Receipt scanning: what we know and what we do not

The feature itself is easy to describe. You point your phone’s camera at a receipt, and Wallet saves it so you can view it later inside the app. That is roughly all Google has confirmed.

Everything beyond that is still an open question. Google has not said whether Wallet pulls out details such as the store name, date and total, whether you can search your receipts, whether they sync across devices or whether you can export them for an expense report. It has also not said which countries get the feature first.

There is a reasonable clue in how Wallet already handles odd items. Its “Everything else” option, which launched in the US in 2024, lets you photograph almost anything with a barcode or text, like a gym card or an insurance card. Wallet then uses AI to figure out what kind of pass it is and suggest the fields, keeping the original photo attached. It would make sense for receipts to work in a similar way, but until Google says so, treat that as an educated guess rather than a spec sheet.

    Why it could be handy

Even a basic version solves real problems. Receipts printed on thermal paper fade, sometimes within months, which is bad news if you need one for a warranty claim on a TV or a laptop. Store returns are easier when the proof of purchase is on your phone rather than in yesterday’s jeans. Freelancers and anyone who claims work expenses could also snap receipts at the counter instead of saving them for an end of month scramble.

Just keep in mind that a scan in Wallet is not a replacement for a dedicated expense app if your employer requires a specific tool, and some stores may still want to see the original paper for returns.

TipScan important receipts as soon as you get them. Thermal paper fades with heat and light, and a clear photo taken on day one is far more useful than a blurry one taken after a year in a glovebox. For big purchases, keep the paper copy too until the warranty runs out.

    The three smaller changes

    An in-app message center

Wallet is getting its own inbox. Google has not said what will show up there. Likely candidates are service updates, card and pass notices or offers from banks and merchants. If it turns into a promotions feed, it could get noisy, but for now there is nothing to judge.

    Clearer merchant names in notifications

This one sounds minor but may matter most day to day. Payment notifications often show whatever the card processor sends, which can be a truncated legal name or a string of letters and numbers that has nothing to do with the coffee shop you just visited. Google says v26.40 “improves merchant names in Google Wallet transaction notifications,” without saying how.

If it works well, it is also a small security win. A charge you recognize instantly is a charge you do not panic about, and a charge you cannot recognize stands out faster. That fits with the broader push Google has made on Android protection this year, including the six new Advanced Protection features in Android 17.

A faster Google Pay checkout in Chrome

When you pay with Google Pay in Chrome on Android, the browser usually shows a Payment Request screen before you confirm. With v26.40, Google Pay can now skip that interface when you are just providing a merchant with your name, email and phone number. In practice, that should mean one less tap and one less screen when you check out on a mobile website.

How Google Wallet compares with Apple Wallet

Apple has taken a different route toward the same goal. Since iOS 16, Apple Wallet has supported order tracking for merchants that build it in. With iOS 26, Apple Intelligence can also pull order details from merchant and shipping emails, so you see what you bought and where it is without any extra setup. That feature needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.

Google’s version starts at the other end. Instead of reading digital orders from your inbox, it captures paper receipts from physical stores. The two approaches are complementary. Neither company has a complete answer yet for every purchase you make, online and off. If you are deep in the Apple world, our list of cars that support wireless keys in Apple Wallet shows how far digital wallets have moved beyond payment cards.

How updates arriveThrough Google Play Services, independent of Android versionMostly with iOS releases

How to check if you have the update

Like most Play Services releases, v26.40 rolls out gradually and installs on its own. If you do not see receipt scanning yet, you are probably just early. You can check your version in about thirty seconds:

    1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
    2. Go to Apps (on some phones, Apps & notifications, then See all apps).
    3. Find and tap Google Play services.
    4. Scroll to the bottom. The version number is listed there. You want 26.40 or higher.

If you are on an older version, tap App details on the same screen to open the Play Store listing and update from there if an update is offered. Then make sure the Google Wallet app itself is current in the Play Store. Even with the latest Play Services, Google often switches features on in stages from its servers, so it may take a few days or weeks before the scan option appears.

Also in this updateThe matching Google Play Store release, v53.6, adds AI summaries with citations from real user reviews in Ask Play, filter chips in the Listen section of Collections and AI summaries for trending Community Posts.

Opera Hands Android Travelers 3GB of Free eSIM Data. Mexico and Canada Are Not on the Map.

Google has spent the last couple of years turning Wallet from a place for payment cards into a catch-all for the stuff you used to carry in a real wallet: boarding passes, transit cards, IDs, loyalty cards and now receipts. Each step on its own is small. Together, they make it more likely you open Wallet several times a week instead of only at the checkout, which is exactly what Google wants.

Receipt scanning fits that plan neatly, and it is the kind of feature that becomes indispensable the first time you need to prove a purchase. Google just needs to explain how it works. One sentence in a changelog is a start, not a manual.

Bottom lineGoogle Play Services v26.40 lets Google Wallet scan and store paper receipts, and also adds a message center, clearer merchant names and a quicker Google Pay checkout in Chrome. It installs automatically on Android phones, but the receipt feature may take a few weeks to show up. Google has not shared details such as supported countries or whether receipts can be searched or exported, so expect more information as the rollout widens.

    FAQ

How do I scan a receipt into Google Wallet?
