Night City is getting another visit from the anime crowd. On the same day Netflix dropped the second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, CD Projekt Red confirmed that a new free patch for Cyberpunk 2077 is coming on October 22. It is called Edgerunners 2 Update, or Update 2.5 for the version-number crowd, and the studio has already named two headline features: cyberware customization and a brand new dual-wielding playstyle.
That is not much to go on yet, but it is enough to get excited. Dual-wielding has been one of the most requested additions since V first picked up a pistol, and a patch this close to a Netflix premiere suggests CD Projekt Red wants lapsed players to have a reason to come back. Here is what is confirmed, what is still a question mark, and how this compares to the last time the anime and the game shared a launch window.
The short version
- Release date: Thursday, October 22, 2026
- Price: free for Cyberpunk 2077 owners
- Platforms: PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch 2 following shortly after
- Confirmed features: cyberware customization, a new dual-wielding playstyle, and “more”
- Next step: a REDstreams showcase on Wednesday, October 21 at 5 PM CEST (11 AM EDT)
What CD Projekt Red actually announced
The announcement came through the studio’s official REDstreams post, which opens with “Chrome up, chooms!” and promises “a new, free update for Cyberpunk 2077” on October 22. The livestream is set for this Wednesday and will give a closer look at “some of its new features.” The studio specifically listed cyberware customization and a new dual-wielding playstyle.
Outlets such as Vice note that the patch will reach Nintendo Switch 2 shortly after the other platforms, and that CD Projekt Red has also confirmed anime-inspired content alongside other new items and features. The official post also credits the artists behind the update’s illustration, including Taisei Uchida, Yukiko Kakita and Yuichiro Tozawa, which hints at how closely the studio is working with the people behind the show.

Why dual-wielding matters
In the base game, V can generally hold one gun or one melee weapon at a time. Cyberware like Mantis Blades or Gorilla Arms changes how you fight, but you never actually hold two firearms at once. A real dual-wielding playstyle is therefore a meaningful change to the combat sandbox, not just a cosmetic extra. It also fits the fantasy of the anime, where gunfights are fast, messy and stylish.
There are plenty of open questions. CD Projekt Red has not said whether dual-wielding will be limited to pistols or whether other weapon types can be paired up. It has not said whether it will use the existing skill trees or a new perk set, and it has not said whether Update 2.5 needs the Phantom Liberty expansion for any of its content. The studio’s own words point to the livestream for those answers, so treat everything beyond the two named features as unconfirmed until then.

The last time an anime tied into the game
This is not the first time CD Projekt Red has timed a patch around the show. On September 6, 2022, the studio released the original Edgerunners Update, also known as Patch 1.6, ahead of the first series’ Netflix premiere. As Vice points out, that update went beyond a few references. Players found anime-inspired gear in Night City, including a jacket and a shotgun from the series, and the patch introduced the Wardrobe system, which lets you change V’s look without changing clothing stats and save up to six outfits.
That history is useful for managing expectations. Update 2.5 does not have to match the size or the content of 1.6, and the studio has not promised a Wardrobe-sized feature. What the old patch shows is that CD Projekt Red is willing to put real systems into these tie-ins, not just a few cosmetics.

Edgerunners 2 and why the timing works
Studio Trigger’s sequel is a standalone story with a new cast, told over 10 episodes that Netflix released together on October 20. The first episode also streamed live for free on CD Projekt Red’s official Twitch channel, according to GamesRadar‘s coverage of the day’s news. Putting the patch two days after the premiere gives viewers a window to finish the show and jump straight into the game while the hype is fresh.
It also fits a bigger picture. The first Edgerunners is widely credited with helping Cyberpunk 2077 recover its reputation after a rough launch, and the game has now passed 40 million copies sold, with Phantom Liberty alone at 15 million. The studio has every reason to keep supporting a game that has become the backbone of its franchise while its next big projects take shape. What to do before October 22
- Tune in to REDstreams: the showcase goes live on Twitch, YouTube and Steam on October 21, and patch details should follow.
- Check your install: major patches in this game have changed saves and mod compatibility before, so back up your saves and expect mods to need updates.
- Finish the show first: the update is described as inspired by the new season, so a few references will land better if you have seen it.
- Plan a new build: if you main a netrunner or a melee character, cyberware customization could change what you want to equip.
If you are looking for something to play while you wait, the RPG scene has another strong option in our review of The Blood of Dawnwalker, made by veterans of the Witcher 3 team.
My take
I like that CD Projekt Red is naming gameplay features first and leaving outfits for later. Dual-wielding and cyberware customization are things that change how the game feels to play, which matters more than a new jacket. What I want to see on Wednesday is how deep it goes. If dual-wielding is a real system with its own perks and animations, it could make a fresh playthrough worth starting. If it is a single pistol trick, it will still be a fun addition, but a smaller one.
Either way, the price is right. It is free, it arrives in two days, and we will update this story once the studio shows its hand.
