Pixel Watch’s September Update Brings Offline Gemini All the Way Back to 2023

Google does not usually treat a three-year-old watch like it still matters. Most software makers save the interesting features for whatever just launched and let older hardware coast on bug fixes. That is not what happened this month. Google’s September 2026 Feature Drop for Pixel Watch quietly hands a real AI upgrade to the Pixel Watch 2, a device that shipped all the way back in 2023, right alongside the brand new Pixel Watch 5.

The update is built around something Google calls Gemini Personalization, and it is joined by offline Gemini support, a handful of new wrist gestures, and a smarter raise to talk model. Not every feature reaches every watch, and the split between what is universal and what is Pixel Watch 5 exclusive is worth understanding before you assume your watch got the whole package.

    Short answer

Gemini Personalization is rolling out this month to every current Pixel Watch, the Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5, and it lets Gemini pull context from Gmail, Calendar, Search, YouTube and Photos to answer questions like “what’s on my calendar today” directly from your wrist. Offline Gemini and a new wrist-turn back gesture are exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5, while double-pinch gestures reach the Pixel Watch 3 and newer, and improved raise-to-talk lands on the Pixel Watch 4 and newer. The update ships as build CP3A.260905.002 on Pixel Watch 3 and 4, and CP3A.260905.002.E1 on Pixel Watch 2.

What Actually Shipped in the September Feature Drop

This is not a single feature with a marketing name attached. Google bundled five distinct changes into the update, and they land across different slices of the Pixel Watch lineup rather than arriving all at once for everyone.

    FeatureWhat It DoesWatches
Gemini PersonalizationPulls context from connected Google apps to answer questions about your own lifePixel Watch 2, 3, 4, 5

Gemini Personalization Reads Your Life, Not Just Your Question

The headline change is Gemini Personalization, and the name undersells what it actually does. Instead of answering a question using only general knowledge, Gemini on the watch now checks your own Gmail, Calendar, Search history, YouTube activity and Google Photos before it replies. Google describes the system as running on “an offline user profile and real-time online retrieval working together,” which is a fairly technical way of saying the watch keeps a lightweight picture of your habits locally and combines it with a live lookup when it needs a specific answer.

In practice, that turns generic voice commands into genuinely useful ones. Ask “what’s on my calendar today” and Gemini reads your actual schedule instead of asking you to open an app. Ask it to find the tracking number in your email and it searches Gmail directly from your wrist. It is the same personalization Google has been rolling out on the web and on phones, just compressed onto a screen the size of a coin.

The privacy trade-off worth knowing about

Reading Gmail, Calendar, Search, YouTube and Photos to answer a question is powerful, and it also means Gemini is drawing on more personal data than a typical voice assistant request. Personalization is tied to your existing Google account permissions, and the same controls you already use to manage Gemini’s access on your phone apply here. If you would rather Gemini stick to general knowledge, the feature can be limited from the Gemini app settings.

Offline Gemini Solves a Problem Every Smartwatch Owner Has Had

Anyone who has tried to talk to a voice assistant mid-run, on a subway platform, or deep inside a gym with bad reception knows the frustration: the watch hears you, then just sits there waiting for a signal that is not coming. Offline Gemini, exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5 for now, is Google’s answer to that specific failure. It processes a set of common requests entirely on the watch’s own hardware, including starting a workout, setting a timer and switching on Do Not Disturb, with no phone connection or Wi-Fi required.

The trade-off is scope. Offline Gemini is not a full substitute for the connected version. It is built for fast, low-latency responses to a defined set of everyday actions rather than open-ended questions, which is exactly the kind of request most people actually make from their wrist in the middle of a workout.

How offline and online Gemini split the work on Pixel Watch 5 A diagram showing a voice request branching into two paths: a simple on-device action handled instantly offline, and a complex personalized question sent online to Gemini Personalization using connected Google apps. Voice request Simple action timer, workout, DND Personalized question calendar, email, search Handled offline on-device, instant Sent online Gmail, Calendar, Photos

Pixel Watch 5 routes simple, repetitive requests on-device and sends anything that needs personal context to the connected version of Gemini.

New Gestures Mean Fewer Screen Taps, but Not on Every Watch

The gesture updates are the part of this release most people will actually feel every day, and they are also where the split between watch generations is sharpest. Double-pinch, tapping your thumb and index finger together twice, works on the Pixel Watch 3 and newer, letting you open notifications, scroll through a Gemini response, or flip between Google Maps views without touching the display. That is useful with wet or gloved hands, or simply when reaching across the screen feels awkward mid-stride.

The Pixel Watch 5 goes a step further with a wrist-turn gesture that acts as a universal back button across apps, something the Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4 do not get in this update. Combined with an expanded double-pinch that also covers Wallet, Recorder and workout metrics on the newest watch, Google is clearly using gestures as a selling point for the current flagship rather than spreading every interaction improvement evenly across the lineup.

The Pixel Watch 5 also exclusively gets the wrist-turn back gesture. Gemini Proactive Suggestions on Pixel Watch 5 additionally require pairing with a Pixel 11 running Gemini with proactive assistance enabled.

How This Compares to Apple’s Approach on the Wrist

The contrast with Apple’s own wrist-based AI rollout this month is hard to miss. When Apple shipped Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12, the feature was locked to two devices launched this year, and only worked when paired with an iPhone 16 or newer. Google is taking close to the opposite path with Gemini Personalization, extending a genuinely new AI capability to a watch that is three product generations and three years old, provided it can still run current Wear OS software.

That does not mean Google is being uniformly generous. The most capable pieces, offline processing and the new gesture set, are still reserved for the Pixel Watch 5, which mirrors the same pattern Apple used when it reserved the broader Siri rebuild in watchOS 27’s rebuilt Siri for Series 9 and later. Both companies are drawing a line between a baseline AI upgrade that reaches most of the installed base and a premium tier of features tied to the newest silicon. Google’s baseline just happens to sit further back in its own product history than Apple’s does.

What This Means If You Are Choosing a Watch Right Now

    • Own a Pixel Watch 2 and wondered if it was abandoned? It was not. Gemini Personalization is a meaningful upgrade for a three-year-old device, even without the gesture and offline extras.
    • Deciding between the Pixel Watch 5 and an older model to save money? The core AI assistant experience is now similar across the lineup. The gap is mainly in gestures, offline reliability, and raise-to-talk accuracy, not in what Gemini can talk to you about.
    • Comparing Android options more broadly? Our roundup of the best Android smartwatches in 2026 weighs Pixel Watch against Samsung’s Wear OS lineup if AI features are only one part of the decision.
    • Not seeing the update yet? Google is rolling this out in stages by build number, CP3A.260905.002 for Pixel Watch 3 and 4, and CP3A.260905.002.E1 for Pixel Watch 2, so a delay of a few days between identical watches is normal.

Apple Watch Series 12’s Ceramic Shield and Ceramic Case: What the Durability Claims Actually Mean

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Pixel Watch 2 really get Gemini Personalization?

Yes. Google is extending Gemini Personalization to the Pixel Watch 2, 3, 4 and 5 in this update, letting all four generations pull context from connected Google apps to answer personal questions.

Can any Pixel Watch use Gemini without an internet connection?

Only the Pixel Watch 5. Offline Gemini handles a limited set of actions, including timers, workouts and Do Not Disturb, entirely on-device. Older models still need a connection for any Gemini request.

Do I need a new Pixel phone to use these features?

No, with one exception. Gemini Personalization and the gesture updates work with the phone you already have. Gemini’s Proactive Suggestions on the Pixel Watch 5 specifically require pairing with a Pixel 11 that has Gemini and proactive assistance turned on.

Why does the Pixel Watch 5 get more features than the rest of the lineup?

Offline processing and the expanded gesture set rely on hardware and gesture-model improvements specific to the Pixel Watch 5. Google has not indicated these will be backported to earlier watches.

    The Bottom Line

    Final Verdict

This is one of the more generous software updates a smartwatch maker has shipped this year, precisely because it treats a 2023 watch as worth improving rather than just maintaining. Gemini Personalization genuinely changes what asking your watch a question can accomplish, and it reaches further back into Google’s own lineup than most companies bother to go. The honest caveat is that the most futureproof pieces, offline Gemini and the full gesture set, still belong to the Pixel Watch 5 alone. If you are wearing an older Pixel Watch, update it. If you were waiting for a reason to upgrade to the newest one, this is the closest Google has come to spelling one out.
