What Actually Happened on Wikipedia

An anonymous account rewrote the opening of Altman’s biography into the past tense and added the details that make a hoax look convincing: a death date of August 12, 2026, a death location in Seattle, and a claim that he had been assassinated. None of it was sourced. None of it was true.
Wikipedia’s own automated systems flagged the change almost immediately as a possible unreferenced addition to a biography of a living person, one of the site’s most tightly policed categories. The source of the error had been corrected. The world’s largest search engine was still repeating it.
