OpenAI has officially released GPT-5, marking a significant step toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This is the company’s first unified AI model, designed to handle a wide range of tasks and now available for free to all users from day one. Unlike previous iterations, GPT-5 moves beyond a simple chatbot and functions more like an intelligent agent, capable of performing complex, multi-step tasks such as building apps from scratch or conducting in-depth research.

One of the most notable improvements lies in reducing hallucinations, or incorrect outputs. According to OpenAI, GPT-5 generates false information in just 4.8% of cases, a significant improvement over GPT-4o (20.6%) and o3 (22%). In sensitive fields like healthcare, this drops even further to 1.6%, suggesting better reliability. The model is also better equipped to detect harmful or malicious queries, and excels in creative writing and design, though these areas aren’t easily measured by standard benchmarks.

Despite these gains, benchmark scores show only modest improvements. In fact, GPT-5 sometimes underperforms compared to competitors like Claude or Grok. However, in software development tasks, GPT-5 stands out—scoring 74.9% on the SWE-bench Verified test, slightly ahead of Claude Opus 4.1 (74.5%) and well above Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (59.6%).

The model is offered in multiple versions tailored to specific use cases:

    • GPT-5: general-purpose tasks with logical reasoning,

    • GPT-5-mini: lightweight and budget-friendly,

    • GPT-5-nano: optimized for speed and low-latency applications,

    • GPT-5-chat: focused on natural, multimodal conversations.

While GPT-5 may not represent a dramatic leap in performance, its versatility, improved safety, and free access position it as a major step forward in the evolution of language models.
