    Summary

    • Apple’s Siri lags behind ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
    • Apple may soon introduce a new ChatGPT-like search experience, as per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
    • It remains unclear when Apple’s upgraded Siri will be released to the public.

The current version of Apple’s Siri isn’t even close to as capable as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It’s also entirely unclear when the long-delayed, next-generation upgraded voice-activated assistant will release, with the tech giant adopting its “not first, but best” strategy when it comes to its Apple Intelligence AI platform.

But according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that could soon change in some ways, with Apple’s “Answers, Knowledge, and Information” team reportedly working on a “stripped-down rival to ChatGPT.”

Gurman says that Apple’s in-house team is working to create a “ChatGPT-like search experience.”

This is a notable shift from Apple’s current strategy of combining Siri and ChatGPT, where Apple’s voice-activated assistant will tap into ChatGPT to answer some questions (as long as you’ve enabled it). While this system works, it also creates a disjointed experience. Gurman says that Apple’s in-house team is working to create a “ChatGPT-like search experience” that’s capable of searching the web and answering questions.

According to the often-reliable source of Apple leaks, these features could be tied to a standalone app, alongside being built directly into Siri, Safari, and even Spotlight. Apple is currently hiring for roles tied to this team, according to Gurman. It’s likely that when Apple’s take on an AI-powered chatbot launches, the company’s partnership with OpenAI will end.

Earlier this year, Apple delayed the release of its upgraded, AI-powered Siri, stating that it would release “in the coming year.” As the AI race continues, Apple is clearly falling behind the competition with its smarter, more personalized AI still not receiving a specific release date.

That said, during the tech giant’s recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company is “very open” to acquisitions to speed up its AI plans. With all of this in mind, it’s still unclear when Apple’s upgraded Siri will actually release.
