Apple refreshed its smartwatch lineup at its September 2026 event, and the choice is now cleaner than ever: three models, three price tiers. The Apple Watch Series 12 is the right pick for most people, the Ultra 4 is for athletes and adventurers, and the SE 3 covers the basics for less. Here is how the current models compare and which one to buy.

Quick answer: Buy the Apple Watch Series 12 (from $399) if you want the full set of health features in a thin, everyday watch. Choose the Apple Watch Ultra 4 (from $799) for the longest battery life, satellite messaging and dive features. Get the Apple Watch SE 3 (from $249) for a first smartwatch, a kid or anyone who mainly wants notifications, fitness and sleep tracking.

All three track sleep with a sleep score, measure wrist temperature and can alert you to signs of sleep apnea. Cellular versions of every model support 5G where your carrier offers it. Every Apple Watch still needs an iPhone, and the 2026 models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27.

Best for most people: Apple Watch Series 12

The Series 12 is the watch most buyers should get. It runs the new S11 chip and watchOS 27, and Apple rebuilt its health sensing system around a new optical heart rate sensor. In the background it now takes a heart rate reading every five seconds and heart rate variability readings as often as every five minutes, which feeds better data into sleep, recovery and fitness tracking.

It also brings the features that justify the step up from the SE: an ECG app, hypertension notifications that look for patterns suggesting high blood pressure over 30 day periods, and a brighter wide angle display. Aluminum models gain Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the glass on the Series 11. Apple calls it its thinnest Apple Watch yet, rated for up to 24 hours of normal use.

The $399 price applies to the 42mm aluminum model. The larger 46mm case, cellular versions and the titanium and ceramic finishes all cost more.

Best for athletes and the outdoors: Apple Watch Ultra 4

The Ultra 4 is for people who push the battery and the hardware. Its 49mm titanium case with a sapphire front is rated WR100 and IP6X, and it is suitable for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with a compatible app. The 3000 nit display stays readable in harsh sun, and battery life reaches up to 50 hours, or 84 hours in Low Power Mode.

Its biggest safety feature is satellite connectivity: Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My work via satellite when you have no cellular or WiFi signal, and Apple includes the satellite service free for two years. The Ultra 4 shares the Series 12 health sensing system and adds a readiness score for training. It comes in natural or black titanium.

Tip: trading in an old Apple Watch can cut the price noticeably. Apple was offering roughly $30 to $430 in credit toward an Ultra 4 in October 2026, depending on the model and condition you trade in.

Best value: Apple Watch SE 3

At $249 the SE 3 covers what most casual users need: an always on display, fitness and workout tracking, sleep score, wrist temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications, irregular rhythm notifications, Fall Detection and Crash Detection. It uses the S10 chip, gets up to 18 hours of battery life and comes in 40mm and 44mm aluminum. What you give up is the ECG app, hypertension notifications, the brighter display and the newer heart rate sensor.

It is also a sensible choice for a child. A cellular SE 3 can be set up through Family Setup even if your kid has no iPhone, and it still offers Emergency SOS and Crash Detection.

Which Apple Watch should you buy?

    • You want the best all rounder: Series 12 in 42mm or 46mm aluminum.
    • You run marathons, hike, dive or travel off grid: Ultra 4.
    • You want to spend as little as possible: SE 3, or a discounted older model from a retailer.
    • You care about blood pressure screening: Series 12 or Ultra 4, since the SE 3 lacks hypertension notifications.

    FAQ

Is the Apple Watch Series 12 worth upgrading to from Series 11?

Probably not for most owners. The new heart rate sensor, tougher glass and S11 chip are useful, but a Series 11 already offers hypertension notifications and sleep score. Owners of a Series 9 or older will notice a bigger jump.

Does Apple still sell the Series 11 or Ultra 3?

Apple’s own store now lists only the Series 12, Ultra 4 and SE 3, plus Hermès editions. Older models may still turn up at retailers, often at a discount.

Linux Distros That Make Hyprland Easy to Use in 2026

Can I use an Apple Watch with an Android phone?

No. Setup and most features require an iPhone, and the current models need an iPhone 11 or later.

Does the Apple Watch measure blood pressure?

Not directly. Hypertension notifications on Series 12 and Ultra 4 look for signs of possible high blood pressure over time, but they do not give a reading and are not meant for people already diagnosed with hypertension.

    The verdict

For most iPhone owners the Apple Watch Series 12 is the one to buy, with the best balance of health features, design and price. Spend more on the Ultra 4 only if you need its battery life, satellite features or dive rating, and save with the SE 3 if you mostly want notifications and activity tracking.
