Android 17 has been finished since June 16. Google pushed it to Pixel phones that morning, wrote a blog post about floating app bubbles, and moved on to the next thing. Two months later, if you own almost any other Android phone, you still cannot download it.
That gap is the most predictable story in mobile, and it is also the one people find hardest to get a straight answer about. Every brand publishes a vague roadmap, every roadmap slips, and the phrase “rolling out in phases” ends up doing an enormous amount of work. So here is the honest state of the Android 17 rollout in the middle of August 2026: who has it, who is next, who is waiting until 2027, and what you actually get at the end of it.

- Pixel 6 owners get Android 17 and then nothing else. Support ends in October 2026, and they are already excluded from the QPR2 beta.
Who Actually Has Android 17 Right Now
The useful question is not whether your phone is on the eligibility list. Most phones sold in the last three years are. The question is when the file actually lands on your device, and those two dates can be a year apart.

Read down that third column and the pattern is hard to miss. One brand finished in June. Two are genuinely in progress. The rest are asking you to wait roughly half a year after the software was declared done.
Pixel Owners Got It First, and One Group Is About to Be Cut Off
Android 17 reached the Pixel 6 through the Pixel 10 series on day one, and the Pixel 10a was added despite missing the beta program entirely, most likely because it launched in February after Beta 2 had already shipped.
There is a catch at the bottom of that list, though, and it is worth knowing about before you spend money on a used phone this autumn.

Android 17 is the last major version your phone will ever get. Google’s five year commitment on that generation runs out in October 2026, which is why Pixel 6 devices were left off the Android 17 QPR2 beta. You keep the phone and you keep Android 17, but the quarterly feature drops and the monthly security patches stop. A 2021 flagship that still feels fine is a genuinely difficult thing to retire, and this is the moment it starts to matter.
Newer Pixels are in a much better position. Everything from the Pixel 8 onward carries a seven year commitment for OS and security updates, which stretches the Pixel 8 into 2030 and means a Pixel 10 bought today is covered until well past the point most people replace a phone. That policy is the single strongest argument for buying a Pixel, and it is worth weighing when you are deciding which Pixel 11 model is actually worth the money now that all four are on sale.
Samsung Is Moving Faster Than Usual, Just Not for You Yet
Samsung unveiled One UI 9, its Android 17 skin, on July 22 alongside the Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8. The market release began on August 7, the day those foldables went on sale.
That distinction matters more than the headlines suggested. One UI 9 shipping on August 7 means it came preinstalled on three brand new phones. It does not mean a single existing Galaxy owner received an update notification. Roughly 50 Samsung devices have been spotted in testing, which is a healthy sign, but testing is not shipping.
The expected order goes Galaxy S26 first, somewhere around September, then last year’s Z Fold 7 and Flip 7, then the S25 and S24 families, and finally the S23 series, the A and M ranges and the tablets, which slide into late 2026 and through 2027. Samsung has not published an official schedule, and the company has a long habit of not doing so, so treat every one of those dates as a best guess rather than a promise.
Credit where it is due, though. Samsung genuinely has improved. A few years ago a major Android version took the better part of a year to reach a Galaxy flagship. Getting the S26 done inside three months of Google’s release would be a solid result, and Samsung now matches Google with seven years of support on its current flagships, which was unthinkable when One UI launched.
Motorola Quietly Beat Almost Everyone
The genuine surprise of this cycle is Motorola. It was the first non-Google brand to put out an Android 17 beta, back on February 25, and it got a stable build out of the door on August 10 with the Edge 2025 in the US, ahead of Samsung’s first actual update.
Motorola has confirmed more than 50 eligible phones, which is a big number for a company whose update reputation has historically been poor. The catch is the shape of the schedule.

So the phones most people actually buy from Motorola, the Moto G family that sells in enormous volume precisely because it is cheap, are last in the queue by a margin of six months or more. That is the trade in the budget Android market, and it is the same everywhere: a low price today is partly financed by slower software later. Motorola also does not publish one consolidated eligibility list, so checking your specific model’s support page is the only reliable way to know where you stand.
OnePlus, Xiaomi and Nothing Are Playing a Longer Game
The rest of the field is further back. OnePlus has been running Android 17 betas on the OnePlus 15 since March, but stable OxygenOS 17 is not expected until early in the fourth quarter, again starting with the flagship. That timing lands in an awkward moment for the brand, given OnePlus is winding down its operations in the US and Europe, which leaves existing owners in those regions reading update roadmaps with more anxiety than usual. OnePlus also still runs a shorter support policy than its rivals, at four OS upgrades and five years of security patches on recent models.
Xiaomi’s situation is the most complicated. It opened an Android 17 developer preview on HyperOS 3.3 back on April 30, limited to a small group that included the Xiaomi 17, the 17 Ultra, the Leica Leitzphone and the global 15T Pro. The broad rollout across Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO is tied to HyperOS 4, which is expected from late in the fourth quarter and running into 2027. Bundling an Android version bump into a full skin overhaul is how you end up shipping a June release the following spring.
Nothing is aiming at the fourth quarter with Nothing OS 5.0, starting with the Phone (3) before it reaches the rest of the lineup. For a company that built much of its identity on clean, fast software, arriving six months behind Google is not the look it wants, though its smaller engineering team makes the delay easier to understand than Xiaomi’s.
Why the Wait Is So Long
It is tempting to read all this as laziness, and sometimes it is. Mostly it is structural, and the sequence is the same at every company that is not Google.
Google releases Android to the open source project and ships its own Pixel build on the same day, because it controls the whole stack. Everyone else then waits on their chipset vendor, usually Qualcomm or MediaTek, to deliver updated low level code for each specific processor. Only when that arrives can the manufacturer start rebuilding its own software layer on top, and One UI, HyperOS and OxygenOS are not thin coats of paint. They are years of custom apps, camera pipelines and system services that all have to be rewritten against the new platform.
After that comes certification. The build has to pass Google’s compatibility test suite to keep the Play Store and Google apps licensed, and in the US it usually has to clear carrier testing on top, which is its own slow queue. Only then does a staged regional rollout begin, one country and one device batch at a time, so a serious bug affects thousands of people instead of millions.
Project Treble and the generic kernel image made all of this meaningfully faster than it was in 2018. They did not make it fast. Every layer between Google’s release and your notification is a company with its own priorities, and the phone you already paid for is rarely the top one.
What You Actually Get When It Arrives
Worth knowing what you are waiting for. Android 17 is not a dramatic visual overhaul, it is a set of practical additions.

The memory work is the quiet winner here. Nobody demos it on stage, but “apps stay in memory instead of reloading every time you switch” is the kind of change you feel every day, unlike a floating window you will try twice and forget.
December Is the Update Worth Circling
Here is the slightly absurd part. While most of the industry is still trying to ship the June release, Google is already three betas into the next quarterly drop, and that one looks more interesting than Android 17 itself.
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 arrived on August 14 for the Pixel 6a through the Pixel 10 series, and it is the biggest build of this cycle so far. It adds a native App Lock, where you long press any app icon and require a fingerprint or PIN before it opens, which is a feature Samsung and Xiaomi users have had for years and stock Android has stubbornly lacked. It brings reorderable and themeable quick settings, blur effects across the system interface and the lock screen, a proper color slider for system theming with four styles per color, and new restrictions aimed at programmatic call forwarding fraud.
Google has not confirmed a stable date, but December is the target, and Android 16 QPR2 went stable on December 2 last year. If your phone is still waiting on Android 17, there is a decent chance it will land already carrying most of this.
What to Do While You Wait
Practical steps, in order of usefulness:
- Check the right screen. Settings, System, Software update on most Android phones, or Settings, Software update on Samsung. If it says you are current, you are in the queue, not forgotten.
- Do not chase it. Factory resets, VPNs set to Germany and clearing the update app’s cache do not move you up a staged rollout. They are folk remedies.
- Take the security patch even when the version number does not change. Monthly patches carry the fixes that actually protect you, and they arrive independently of the big version bump.
- Check your phone’s end of support date before you buy anything used. A cheap 2021 flagship with three months of patches left is not a bargain.
- If updates matter to you, buy that way. Seven years from Google and Samsung, four OS upgrades from OnePlus, and a genuine lottery at the budget end. This is a spec, and it belongs on the list next to the camera.
The Gap Is the Story
Two months on, Android 17 is finished software sitting on a shelf for most of the people who own an Android phone. Google shipped in June, Motorola made a genuinely impressive showing in August, Samsung is closing the gap it used to be mocked for, and a large chunk of the market is being asked to wait until next year for an operating system that was ready this summer.
None of this is new, and that is rather the point. The version number on your phone is decided less by what Google built than by which company assembled your handset and how much it cares about you after the sale. Until that changes, the most honest advice about the Android 17 rollout stays the same: find out what your manufacturer has actually promised, in writing, before you buy the next one.
