Foldables have spent six years being compromised phones that happened to fold. The screen creased, the battery was smaller than a normal flagship’s, the cameras came from the midrange, and you paid double for the privilege. Every generation closed one of those gaps and left the others open.

The vivo X Fold6 went on sale outside China on October 1, and it is the first book style foldable that stops apologizing for any of it. The inner screen is 8.02 inches. The battery is 6,900mAh, which is larger than most candy bar flagships and roughly 44 percent bigger than what Samsung puts in the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The main camera is a 200MP sensor with Zeiss coating, and there is a real periscope telephoto behind it.

Then you get to the price, and the compromise reappears in a different place.

Quick answerThe vivo X Fold6 launched globally on October 1, 2026, starting at about 2,199 euros in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with an India launch following on October 6. It pairs an 8.02 inch 2K+ LTPO inner display with a 6.51 inch cover screen, both running 1 to 120Hz at up to 5,000 nits with Dolby Vision. Inside is MediaTek’s 3nm Dimensity 9500 Super Edition with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X and up to 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage. The 6,900mAh battery uses fifth generation silicon anode and semi solid state chemistry, charging at 80W wired and 40W wireless. Cameras are a 200MP main with OIS and Zeiss T* coating, a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto, with 20MP selfie cameras on both screens. The Prism Black model is 4.4mm thick unfolded at 228g. Software is OriginOS 7 Fold on Android 17. There is no US release.

    What vivo actually shipped

The global X Fold6 is not quite the Chinese model. vivo trimmed the battery slightly, from 7,000mAh to 6,900mAh, and moved the software to Android 17 where the domestic version launched on Android 16. Everything else carries over largely intact, which is unusual: international versions of Chinese flagships are often where the interesting hardware quietly disappears.

One detail in that table is easy to skim past and worth stopping on: the two colors are not the same thickness. Prism Black comes in at 4.4mm unfolded and 228g, while Horizon Blue is 4.8mm and 235g. Different back materials account for the gap, and it is the kind of specification split that usually goes unmentioned. If thinness is why you want this phone, the color you choose changes the answer.

The IP ratings also deserve a moment. IPX9 covers high pressure, high temperature water jets, which is a rating you almost never see on a phone and had been essentially unheard of on a folding one until vivo started chasing it. The dust rating is the weaker half at IP5X, meaning dust protected rather than dust tight, which is the standard limitation for a device with a hinge.

The battery is the headline, and the chemistry explains it

A 6,900mAh cell inside a phone that measures 4.4mm when open should not be possible with conventional lithium ion. It is possible here because vivo is not using conventional lithium ion.

The X Fold6 uses what vivo calls a fifth generation silicon anode design, paired with a third generation semi solid state cell. Replacing graphite with silicon in the anode raises energy density substantially, which is how you fit more capacity into less space. We went through how silicon anode cells differ from standard lithium ion, and the short version is that the Chinese manufacturers committed to the technology years ago while Samsung and Apple stayed on the safer chemistry. The gap in the table below is the direct consequence of that decision.

Battery capacity and charging speed of the vivo X Fold6 against the Galaxy Z Fold 8 The vivo X Fold6 carries a 6,900mAh battery charging at 80W wired and 40W wireless. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 carries 4,800mAh charging at 45W wired and 20W wireless. The vivo cell is about 44 percent larger and charges at nearly twice the wattage. A 44 percent bigger battery in a thinner phone Capacity and charging, vivo X Fold6 against Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8.vivo X Fold6 6,900mAhGalaxy Z Fold 8 4,800mAh 80W vs 45W wired charging vivo nearly doubles it 40W vs 20W wireless charging exactly double 228g vs 201g weight this is vivo’s tradeSilicon anode chemistry buys the capacity. The 27 grams is what it costs you to carry it. Weights are for the Prism Black X Fold6 and the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Capacity bars are scaled proportionally. Charging figures are manufacturer maximums, not sustained rates.

Vivo also claims the semi solid state construction improves behavior at low temperature and low voltage, which is the unglamorous half of battery engineering and the half people actually notice. Phones do not usually fail by running out of capacity on day one. They fail by losing a third of their usable range in winter, or by shutting down at an indicated 8 percent. Those are the problems semi solid state cells are meant to address, and they are hard to verify without months of use, so treat the claim as a claim.

The cameras, and the lens you can bolt onto them

The rear array is 200MP main with OIS and Zeiss T* anti reflective coating, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto carrying Zeiss APO certification. A genuine periscope on a foldable is the hard part, because the folding mechanism eats the internal depth that a periscope needs, and it is the thing Samsung has repeatedly declined to attempt on the Z Fold line.

Three cameras at 50MP or above has quietly become the standard at the top of the Chinese market rather than a differentiator. Oppo’s current flagship runs three 200MP sensors, which puts vivo’s arrangement in the middle of its competitive set rather than at the front of it.

The more unusual item is the accessory. The X Fold6 works with vivo’s Zeiss Telephoto Extender Gen 2, a clip on lens that pushes the system to a 200mm equivalent focal length for both stills and video. This is a niche product and nobody should buy a foldable for it, but it is a real optical attachment rather than a software crop, and it is the sort of thing that exists only because vivo’s camera division is willing to ship hardware for a small audience.

Against the Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the phone most buyers at this price are weighing, so the comparison is the useful part.

On raw hardware the X Fold6 wins most of the rows, and it wins the ones that tend to matter in daily use rather than on a spec sheet. A 44 percent larger battery and nearly double the charging speed change what a phone feels like to own. A periscope telephoto changes what you can photograph.

Samsung keeps two advantages that no amount of silicon buys. The Z Fold 8 is 27 grams lighter, which is noticeable in a device you hold open with one hand for long stretches. And Samsung ships seven years of OS and security updates, a commitment vivo has not matched and did not announce alongside this launch. On a phone costing this much, intended to last, that is not a footnote.

    The catch, stated plainly

Before you get attached“Global” here means Germany, Austria and Switzerland at launch, through vivo’s own website, with India following on October 6. There is no United States release and none has been indicated. At roughly 2,199 euros the X Fold6 also costs meaningfully more than a Galaxy Z Fold 8 does in the US, so the familiar story of a Chinese flagship undercutting Samsung does not apply. vivo has said pricing and availability will be announced market by market, which means the list of countries may grow, slowly.

It is worth being clear about why this phone is expensive rather than cheap. The usual pattern for a Chinese flagship entering Europe is aggressive pricing to buy attention. vivo went the other way, and the reason is partly the bill of materials, since a 200MP sensor, a periscope, two 5,000 nit panels and a 1TB storage option are not cheap in a year when memory pricing has gone vertical. It is also partly positioning. This is vivo asking to be taken seriously at the top of the market rather than treated as the value option.

The wider context is that the foldable field is about to get crowded in a way it has never been. Apple’s first foldable opens to 7.6 inches and arrives on a hinge built from around 100 parts, and once Apple is in the category the terms of comparison change for everyone. vivo launching a hardware maximalist foldable now, ahead of that, is a reasonable read of the calendar.

    Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy the vivo X Fold6?

At launch, Germany, Austria and Switzerland through vivo’s official website, with India following on October 6. vivo says further markets will be announced individually.

Is it coming to the United States?

No. vivo does not sell phones through US carriers, and nothing about this launch suggests that is changing. Imported units would lack carrier certification and warranty support.

    How much does it cost?

About 2,199 euros to start. An Italian retailer listing ahead of launch showed 2,135.90 euros for the 12GB and 512GB configuration, so expect some variation between markets and retailers.

Is the global version different from the Chinese one?

Slightly. The battery drops from 7,000mAh to 6,900mAh, and the software ships as OriginOS 7 Fold on Android 17 rather than the Android 16 build the Chinese model launched with. The rest carries over.

How does the battery compare to other foldables?

At 6,900mAh it is the largest in a mainstream book style foldable by a wide margin. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 carries 4,800mAh, so vivo is ahead by about 44 percent while also being thinner when open.

    Does it survive water?

It carries IPX8 and IPX9 water resistance, with IPX9 covering high pressure and high temperature jets. Dust protection is IP5X, which is dust protected rather than dust tight, the usual ceiling for a hinged device.

How long will it get software updates?

vivo did not announce an update commitment with this launch, which is a gap worth weighing against Samsung’s seven years of OS and security updates on the Z Fold 8.

Are the two colors really different thicknesses?

Yes. Prism Black is listed at 4.4mm unfolded and 228g, Horizon Blue at 4.8mm and 235g, owing to different back materials.

    The bottom line

The vivo X Fold6 is the most complete book style foldable anyone has shipped. It has the biggest screen, by a long way the biggest battery, the fastest charging, the only real periscope telephoto in the category and a water resistance rating most non folding phones cannot claim. The list of things it gives up to fold is now genuinely short: 27 grams against Samsung, and an update policy vivo has not put in writing.

What it does not have is a price that makes the decision easy, or a release in the largest premium phone market on earth. At roughly 2,199 euros it asks more than Samsung does while offering less certainty about long term support, and for most readers of this site the question is academic anyway, because you cannot buy one.

The reason it still matters is that it sets the bar. Six years of foldables have been sold on the premise that folding costs you battery, cameras and durability. vivo has now demonstrated that it does not have to, using battery chemistry that has been available to everyone. The next Galaxy Z Fold has a harder argument to make than the last one did.
