Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 Reviews: Much Faster, but the Battery Barely Moved

Samsung spent years building its own watch chips, and with the Galaxy Watch 9 it finally gave up and handed the job to Qualcomm. The result is the biggest speed jump a Galaxy Watch has seen in a long time. It is also a watch where the battery, the thing most people complain about, barely changed. Reviews of the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 have been landing for a few weeks now, so this is a good moment to separate what is genuinely better from what is mostly marketing.

Here is the short version of the specs, the prices, what reviewers found, and who should actually spend money on either one.

    Quick take

The Galaxy Watch 9 ($379.99 and up) and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 ($699.99) both run the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip on Wear OS 7 with One UI 9 Watch. Reviewers call them dramatically faster and brighter than the last generation. The catch: Notebookcheck found no real battery gain on the larger 44mm Watch 9, and the best health features still need a Samsung phone. Both watches cost more than the models they replace.

Specs and prices as reported by Droid-Life, Tom’s Guide, Notebookcheck, PhoneArena and Android Central. A few outlets list slightly different figures, and we have used the most commonly reported ones.

The Chip Is the Real Story

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Wear Elite at MWC in March, and Samsung’s watches are among the first to use it. Qualcomm’s own claims are bold: up to five times the single-core CPU performance and seven times the GPU performance of the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2, plus roughly 30% better battery efficiency and a charge to 50% in about 10 minutes. The chip is built on a 3nm process and includes a dedicated NPU aimed at running small AI models on the wrist.

Reviewers say the speed part is real. Notebookcheck’s benchmarks show a substantial jump over the old Exynos W1000 that powered earlier Galaxy Watches, and the outlet went as far as calling the Watch 9 significantly faster and brighter than the Apple Watch 11. Swiping through menus, opening apps and loading watch faces feel snappier, which is the kind of improvement you notice on day one.

Speed and efficiency numbers are Qualcomm’s launch claims, not independent measurements.

If you want the background on how Samsung got here, our look at the One UI 9 Watch beta covers what the new software brings to older Galaxy Watches, which matters if you are wondering whether you need new hardware at all.

Battery: Bigger on Paper, Not Much in Practice

This is where the story gets less exciting. Samsung grew the 40mm cell from 325mAh to 390mAh, a 20% increase. The 44mm model only moved from 435mAh to 445mAh, a gain of about 2%. Notebookcheck tested the larger watch and did not notice any improvement in battery life. In its words, runtime even looked slightly worse than the Watch 8, which is a rough result for a chip that was supposed to be more efficient.

On the smaller watch, GadgetCV reported that it lasted from morning to mid-afternoon the next day, so roughly a day and a half of light use. That is fine, but it is not a leap. The Ultra 2 is the outlier here with an 800mAh cell, and Samsung reportedly rates it at around 60 hours against about 30 hours for the Watch 9 under moderate use. Those are manufacturer figures, so treat them as a ceiling.

    What Reviewers Actually Said

    OutletMain takeaway
NotebookcheckHuge performance leap and a very bright display, but a relatively modest upgrade overall and no battery gain on the 44mm.
Trusted ReviewsHeadline: “Almost the perfect watch.”
GSMArenaHarsher, saying the Watch 9 fails to impress as a step up.
GadgetCVRefined health tracking, weak battery on the 40mm.

The pattern is consistent. Everyone likes how it feels to use. Almost nobody thinks it is a must-upgrade if you already own a Watch 7 or Watch 8. For the competition on the Android side, our Pixel Watch 5 review roundup shows a similar story, where the new generation is smarter inside but not dramatically different outside.

Health Features: Good, With a Samsung Phone

The software side adds a Vitals dashboard that puts your key wellness numbers in one place, a Heart Health score, Cardio Load insights and a Fitness Index score out of 100. Sleep apnea detection is FDA cleared. These are useful additions, and they make the watch feel more like a coach than a notification mirror.

The frustration, flagged by Notebookcheck, is that ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea measurements are still limited to Samsung phones. If you carry a Pixel or another Android phone, you will get a faster watch but not the full health suite. That is worth knowing before you buy, especially if heart monitoring is the reason you want a watch in the first place. Our rundown of the best smartwatches with ECG shows which rivals do not have that kind of phone restriction.

    Heads up on the price

Both watches got more expensive. The Watch 9 rose by about $30 and the Ultra 2 by about $50. Launch promotions offered $50 or $100 in credit and up to $250 in trade-in value, so check Samsung’s current listing before paying full price.

    • ~ Modest upgrade for Watch 7 and 8 owners

Garmin MARQ Gen 3 Is Official: LTE, Satellite SOS and a $2,500 Starting Price

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Galaxy Watch 9 cost?

Prices start at $379.99 for the Bluetooth model, with LTE versions starting at $429.99. That is roughly $30 more than the Watch 8 launch price.

How much is the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2?

It costs $699.99 for the 47mm titanium model, about $50 more than the first Ultra, and comes in Titanium Silver and Titanium Gray.

Is the Galaxy Watch 9 battery better than the Watch 8?

Only slightly on paper. The 40mm gets a 20% larger battery, while the 44mm gets about 2% more. Notebookcheck saw no real-world gain on the 44mm.

Do the new health features work with any Android phone?

Not all of them. ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea measurements remain limited to Samsung phones, according to reviewers.

Should I upgrade from the Galaxy Watch 8?

Probably not. The speed is a real improvement, but battery life and design are close to the Watch 8, so the upgrade is hard to justify at full price.

    Final Verdict

    The Bottom Line

The Galaxy Watch 9 is the smoothest Galaxy Watch yet, and the chip swap fixes the sluggishness that held earlier models back. It just does not fix the battery. Buy it if your current watch is three or more years old, wait for a discount if you own a Watch 8, and look hard at the Ultra 2 if endurance matters more than size.
