A year ago the choice between Apple’s two “middle” iPhones was simple. The iPhone Air was the $999 phone you bought because it felt incredible in the hand, and the Pro was the expensive one with all the cameras. Then Apple raised prices at its September 9 event, citing memory costs, and the math changed.

Today the iPhone Air starts at $1,099 and the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. The gap is exactly $100 at every storage tier. For that money, the Pro adds two extra rear cameras, a newer chip, a much bigger battery and twice the charging speed. The Air gives you something no spec sheet captures well: a phone that is 5.6mm thin and weighs 165 grams.

So which one makes sense in October 2026? We went through Apple’s official spec sheets, current pricing and the latest hands-on testing to answer that properly.

Quick answerBuy the iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199) if you care about zoom photos, battery life or fast charging. It has three 48MP cameras including a 4x telephoto, up to 36 hours of video playback versus 27 hours on the Air, and reaches 50% in about 15 minutes. Buy the iPhone Air ($1,099) if comfort matters most: it is 3.1mm thinner, 46g lighter and has a slightly bigger 6.5-inch screen. Both have 12GB of RAM, an 18MP front camera, a 3,000-nit display and run iOS 27. Watch for carrier deals, since the Air is frequently discounted below $1,000.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Air: specs side by side

Here is how the two phones compare on paper, using Apple’s own figures where available.

Price: the $100 gap is new

The iPhone Air launched at $999 in September 2025. When the iPhone 18 Pro arrived, Apple pushed the Air to $1,099 and raised prices on the iPhone 17 and 17e too. Tim Cook blamed rising component costs driven by the memory shortage, the same squeeze that is pushing up phone prices across the industry. The 1TB Air took the biggest hit and now costs $1,699.

    StorageiPhone 18 ProiPhone AirDifference
    256GB$1,199$1,099$100
    512GB$1,399$1,299$100
    1TB$1,799$1,699$100
    2TB$2,399Not offeredn/a

List price is only half the story. The Air is a year older, sold below expectations and is regularly discounted by carriers and retailers. T-Mobile and Walmart have both listed it around $1,000 to $1,050 this month. If you can get an Air for $900 to $950, the comparison tilts noticeably in its favor. At full price, $100 for the Pro’s extras is a strong deal.

Design: the only category the Air wins outright

From the front the two phones look nearly identical: flat screens, slim bezels and a Dynamic Island. The 18 Pro’s island is a touch smaller and can show three Live Activities at once instead of two, which is nice but not something you will notice much.

Turn them around, or better, pick them up, and they are completely different devices.

Apple Promises 44 Hours From the iPhone Duo. Six Android Foldables Show How Far Claims Drift.

Thickness and weight: iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Air The iPhone 18 Pro is 8.75mm thick and weighs 211 grams. The iPhone Air is 5.64mm thick and weighs 165 grams, which makes it 36 percent thinner and 22 percent lighter. How much thinner and lighter is the Air? Apple’s official measurements Thickness iPhone 18 Pro 8.75mm iPhone Air 5.64mm Weight iPhone 18 Pro 211g iPhone Air 165g 36% thinner 22% lighter
The Air is taller and wider than the 18 Pro, yet still noticeably lighter in a pocket.

The Air measures 5.64mm and weighs 165g. The 18 Pro is 8.75mm and 211g. That makes the Air about 36% thinner and 22% lighter, even though it is slightly taller and wider to fit its bigger screen. Reviewers who expected the Air to be a gimmick keep coming back to the same point: it is genuinely more pleasant to hold for long stretches, and you stop noticing it in a jacket pocket.

Materials are flipped from what you might expect. The cheaper Air has a titanium frame, while the 18 Pro moved to an aluminum unibody. Both use Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and are rated IP68. If you plan to put the Air in a thick case, you lose much of what you paid for, so factor that in.

    Display: almost a tie

The two screens share the same technology: OLED, 460 pixels per inch, ProMotion from 1Hz to 120Hz, Always-On and 3,000 nits peak brightness outdoors. The only real difference is size. The Air’s 6.5-inch panel is a little roomier for reading and video than the 18 Pro’s 6.3-inch one. The logic is the same one we found when we compared the Air with last year’s iPhone 17 Pro: if you want a bigger screen without paying for a Pro Max, the Air is the large-screen iPhone that does not feel large.

Cameras: the clearest reason to pay more

This is where the $100 earns its keep. The iPhone 18 Pro has three 48MP rear cameras:

    • 48MP Fusion main with a new variable aperture that can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. Wide open it pulls in more light at night. Stopped down, it gives sharper backgrounds and more depth in group shots.
    • 48MP ultrawide with a 120 degree field of view, which also handles macro shots.
    • 48MP 4x telephoto (100mm equivalent) with a tetraprism design, plus an 8x “optical quality” crop at 200mm.

The Air has a single 48MP main camera with a fixed f/1.6 aperture. It can still crop to a 2x view and it takes excellent everyday photos and portraits. What it cannot do is reach. Concerts, kids on a soccer field, wildlife, architecture details across a street: these are the shots where the Air falls apart and the Pro shines. There is also no ultrawide, so no macro mode and no wide landscape shots.

Selfie shooters can relax. Both phones use the same 18MP Center Stage front camera, which can switch to a landscape framing without you rotating the phone.

    Performance and software

The 18 Pro runs Apple’s newer A20 Pro, with a 6-core CPU (two “super” cores and four efficiency cores), a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and hardware ray tracing. The Air uses last year’s A19 Pro. Both have 12GB of RAM, which matters more than the chip for one reason: it is enough to run the full Apple Intelligence feature set and the new Siri in iOS 27 on both phones.

In daily use you will not feel a difference. Scrolling, streaming, messaging and photo editing are instant on either. The gap shows up in long gaming sessions and video exports, where the Air’s thin body has less room to shed heat and it warms up faster. The Pro also has a year more runway for updates, since the Air shipped with iOS 26. Realistically that means something like six more years of iOS releases for the Air versus seven for the Pro.

Battery and charging: the Pro’s second big win

You cannot fit a big battery into a 5.6mm phone, and Apple did not try. The Air has a 3,149mAh cell. The 18 Pro has 4,288mAh in the eSIM-only US model, or 4,056mAh in versions with a SIM tray. That is roughly 36% more capacity.

Battery life: Apple’s video playback ratings Local video playback: iPhone 18 Pro up to 36 hours, iPhone Air up to 27 hours, iPhone Air with MagSafe Battery up to 40 hours. Streamed video: iPhone 18 Pro up to 33 hours, iPhone Air up to 22 hours. Battery life in hours (Apple ratings) Video playback, higher is better Downloaded video iPhone 18 Pro 36 h iPhone Air 27 h Air + MagSafe Battery 40 h Streamed video iPhone 18 Pro 33 h iPhone Air 22 h
The Air’s optional MagSafe Battery closes the gap, but it also adds back the bulk you paid to avoid.

Apple rates the 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and the Air at 27 hours. For streamed video the gap is bigger: 33 hours versus 22. In real life that tends to mean a day and a half from the Pro and one full day from the Air if you charge every night. Heavy users, travelers and anyone who forgets the charger will feel the difference by mid-evening. We dug into how the Pro holds up outside the lab in our look at iPhone 18 Pro battery life in real-world use.

Charging widens the gap. With a 60W-capable adapter, the 18 Pro reaches 50% in about 15 minutes. The Air needs 30 minutes to get there, even with a stronger brick. On MagSafe both reach 50% in about half an hour, so wireless chargers level the field.

Tip for Air buyersIf you choose the Air, budget for Apple’s slim iPhone Air MagSafe Battery. Apple says it stretches video playback to 40 hours, longer than the 18 Pro on its own. Clip it on for travel days and leave it at home the rest of the time, so you keep the thin phone on normal days.

    The iPhone Air 2 question

There is one more thing to weigh. The Air did not get a successor this fall. According to reports from The Information and Bloomberg, Apple scaled back Air production after weak early sales, with CIRP data putting the Air at around 3% of US iPhone sales in its launch month. The next model has reportedly slipped to spring 2027, alongside the base iPhone 18, and rumors point to a second rear camera.

That has two consequences. If you want a thin iPhone with better cameras and can wait six months, waiting is reasonable. And if you buy the current Air today, expect bigger discounts as the replacement gets closer. Apple has had its own demand questions this year too, reportedly cutting iPhone 18 Pro orders by 15%, so deals on both phones are likely through the holidays.

Bottom lineAt list price, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better buy for most people. $100 gets you two extra cameras, a newer chip, roughly 36% more battery and much faster charging. The iPhone Air still makes sense for one kind of buyer: someone who values how a phone feels in the hand more than what it can do at the edges, and ideally someone who finds it on sale. Hold both in a store before deciding. The Air’s thinness is easy to dismiss on paper and hard to forget once you have tried it.
