Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro at up to 36 hours of video playback and 24 hours of typical use, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 45 hours of video and 30 hours of typical use. Those are the two headline numbers. The more revealing ones are underneath: the Pro Max carries a 5,391mAh cell, an increase of nearly 12 percent over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while the smaller Pro carries 4,056mAh, which is 68mAh more than last year. The Pro gained hours without gaining a battery, and how it managed that is the actual story of this generation.
Quick answer
iPhone 18 Pro: 4,056mAh, up to 36 hours of video, 33 streamed, 24 hours typical use. iPhone 18 Pro Max: 5,391mAh, up to 45 hours of video, 40 streamed, 30 hours typical use. Both charge to 50 percent in about 15 minutes on a 60W wired adapter, or 30 minutes on MagSafe at 25W. The Pro Max is the real battery upgrade this year. The Pro gets its extra hours from the 2 nanometer A20 Pro chip and a much larger vapor chamber, not from a bigger cell.
Apple has never printed a capacity figure on a spec sheet, so for most of the iPhone’s life the only battery number available was a playback rating produced in Apple’s own lab. That changed when the EU energy label came into force, and the filings behind this year’s launch let you put the rated hours and the physical cell side by side for the first time. Here is everything the two phones actually deliver, what those lab hours mean for a normal day, and how fast they refill.

Rated battery life, iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro
Apple publishes three runtime figures for each phone. Video playback is a local file playing on a fixed brightness, which is the gentlest realistic workload and produces the biggest number. Streamed video adds the cellular or Wi-Fi radio working continuously, so it always lands a few hours lower. Typical use is Apple’s own blended estimate across mixed activity, and it is the one closest to a real day.
| Model | Typical use | Video playback | Streamed video |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro | Up to 24 hours | Up to 36 hours | Up to 33 hours |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Up to 30 hours | Up to 45 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| iPhone 17 Pro | Not published | Up to 33 hours | Up to 30 hours |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | Not published | Up to 39 hours | Up to 35 hours |
So the generational gain on paper is three hours of video on the Pro and six hours on the Pro Max. Zoom out and the trend is steeper than it looks year to year: the iPhone 15 Pro was rated at 23 hours of video, the 16 Pro at 27, the 17 Pro at 33, and now the 18 Pro at 36. The smaller Pro has gained more than half a day of rated playback in three generations.
The capacities Apple does not advertise
Every phone sold in the EU has to publish an energy label, and the supporting documentation carries a battery capacity in mAh. That is how these figures reached the public. Note that each iPhone now exists in two physical builds: models with a SIM tray, and the eSIM only versions sold in the US, which have more room inside and therefore a slightly larger cell.
| Model | With SIM tray | eSIM only | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro | 3,988mAh | 4,252mAh | baseline |
| iPhone 18 Pro | 4,056mAh | 4,288mAh | up 1.7 percent |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | 4,823mAh | 5,088mAh | baseline |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 5,391mAh | 5,567mAh | up 11.8 percent |
The Pro Max gained 568mAh. The Pro gained 68mAh, a difference of more than eight times, in the same generation, announced on the same day with the same language about a leap in battery life. We went through the full filing and what it implies in our piece on what the EU energy label reveals about the iPhone 18 Pro battery.
Where the smaller Pro finds its extra hours
Three more hours of rated video on 68 extra milliamp hours is not arithmetic that works. The gain is real, it just is not stored in the cell. Two changes are doing the work.
The first is the A20 Pro, the first 2 nanometer processor in a phone. The chip is the hungriest component in the device, so every efficiency gain there converts directly into runtime without adding weight or thickness. The second is thermal. The vapor chamber in the 18 Pro has roughly three times the surface area of the one in the 17 Pro, and Apple rates it for up to 40 percent better sustained performance. That matters for battery because a phone that cannot shed heat throttles, and a throttled phone takes longer to finish the same task, which burns more charge doing it. Cooling is a battery feature that never shows up on a battery spec line.
Note
The EU label reports endurance differently again. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max it lists 62 hours of endurance per charge and a rating of 1,000 full charge cycles, comfortably above the 800 cycle minimum a phone needs to be sold in the EU at all. Different test, different number, same battery.
What you will actually get in a day
None of the published figures describe your day, because none of them include the things that really drain a phone: a weak cellular signal, mapping and navigation, the camera, 5G in a fringe area, and a bright screen outdoors. As a working translation, treat the typical use rating as the ceiling for a heavy day and expect roughly two thirds of it under load.
In practice that means the iPhone 18 Pro is a comfortable single day phone for most people and will end a heavy day somewhere in the twenties. The Pro Max, with a genuinely larger cell this time, is the one that reaches a second day for light and moderate users, and it is the meaningful choice if battery is your deciding factor. The gap between the two is wider this year than it was last year, precisely because only one of them got a new battery.
Tip
To see your own numbers rather than Apple’s, open Settings, then Battery. The screen shows the last 24 hours and the last 10 days, with a per app breakdown and, further down, Battery Health with the maximum capacity percentage and the cycle count. Judge a new phone after a week, not on day one: indexing, iCloud sync and Photos analysis all run hard in the first few days and make a fresh iPhone look worse than it is.
Charging speed
Charging is the quieter upgrade this year. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reach 50 percent in around 15 minutes from a 60W wired adapter or higher. Last year the 17 Pro needed 20 minutes from a 40W adapter to hit the same point, so both the ceiling and the speed moved. Wireless charging peaks at 25W on both MagSafe and Qi2, which gets you to 50 percent in about 30 minutes with a 35W adapter behind the charger.
Two practical caveats. Apple does not include a charger in the box, so the 15 minute figure assumes you own or buy a 60W adapter, and a 20W brick left over from an older iPhone will be dramatically slower. And the wireless figure depends on the power supply feeding the MagSafe puck, not on the puck alone, which is the most common reason people report slow wireless charging on a new phone.
Warning
Fast charging is hard on a cell over years, not weeks. If you charge overnight anyway, leave Optimized Battery Charging on and let the phone finish slowly in the morning rather than reaching for the fastest brick you own every time. The 1,000 cycle rating assumes normal use, not a daily diet of maximum rate charging in a warm room.
Frequently asked questions
How many mAh is the iPhone 18 Pro battery?
4,056mAh in models with a SIM tray and 4,288mAh in the eSIM only version sold in the US. The iPhone 18 Pro Max carries 5,391mAh and 5,567mAh respectively. Apple does not publish these figures directly; they come from EU energy label documentation.
How long does the iPhone 18 Pro battery last?
Apple rates it at up to 24 hours of typical use, 36 hours of local video playback and 33 hours of streamed video. The Pro Max is rated at 30 hours typical, 45 hours of video and 40 streamed. Expect roughly two thirds of the typical use figure on a heavy day with navigation, camera and a weak signal.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro battery bigger than the iPhone 17 Pro?
Barely. The cell grew from 3,988mAh to 4,056mAh, an increase of 1.7 percent. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the model with the real jump, from 4,823mAh to 5,391mAh, up 11.8 percent. The smaller Pro gains its extra rated hours from the 2 nanometer A20 Pro chip and a larger vapor chamber instead.
How fast does the iPhone 18 Pro charge?
To 50 percent in about 15 minutes with a 60W wired adapter or higher, and to 50 percent in about 30 minutes on MagSafe with a 35W adapter. Wireless charging peaks at 25W on both MagSafe and Qi2. No adapter is included in the box.
How do I check the battery health on my iPhone 18 Pro?
Open Settings, then Battery, and scroll to Battery Health. It reports maximum capacity as a percentage of original and the number of charge cycles the phone has been through. The same Battery screen shows usage over the last 24 hours and 10 days, broken down by app.
Should I buy the Pro Max for the battery?
If battery is the deciding factor this year, yes. The Pro Max is the only one of the two that received a substantially larger cell, and the gap between the models is wider than in the 17 Pro generation. If you want the smaller phone, the 18 Pro is still a clear improvement on last year, just not because of the battery inside it.
The bottom line
Two phones, one battery upgrade. The iPhone 18 Pro Max earns its 45 hour rating with almost 12 percent more cell, and it is the model to buy if runtime decides your purchase. The iPhone 18 Pro reaches 36 hours on a battery that is essentially unchanged, which is a genuine engineering achievement in silicon and cooling rather than a bigger tank. Both refill faster than last year, provided you own an adapter that can keep up.
