Claude Duet Is Anthropic’s Agent That Texts You First. It Still Won’t Spend Your Money Without Asking.

Most AI assistants wait for you to type something. Anthropic’s newest product is built to do the opposite. Claude Duet, announced on October 21, 2026, is an agent that watches your connected apps, writes you a short brief each morning, and pings you when something needs your attention. You do not have to open a chat and ask first.

It is a research preview, it sits behind a waitlist, and it is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. That makes it worth understanding now, even if you are not getting in this week.

    The short version

    • What it is: a standalone proactive agent app, built around Claude Opus 5.5
    • Who gets it: US Pro and Max subscribers, through a waitlist
    • Where it runs: iOS, Android and the Claude website
    • Price: included in your plan, but background work counts toward your usage limits
    • The rule: it must show you the action and wait before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything

What Claude Duet actually does all day

Anthropic pitches Duet at professionals and small business owners who have “more on their plates than they can track.” The daily rhythm is simple. Each morning it sends a brief covering the most important items across your connected apps. During the day it checks those accounts every few hours and messages you only when it judges that something deserves your attention.

You can also hand it work. The examples Anthropic gives range from scheduling meetings to building dashboards from dozens of tools, drafting financial or sales forecasts, prototyping, and putting together small web apps. Everything lives in one ongoing text or voice thread, so a quick question and a week-long project share the same conversation.

The part that sets it apart from a normal chatbot is where the work happens. Duet gets a virtual machine with its own browser, so tasks keep running when your phone is off and your laptop is shut. Anthropic’s Mike Krieger said on X that he had used it for a few weeks at work and at home, including for drafting questions for a fireside chat and watching Slack over a weekend.

    What it connects to

Duet carries over memory, skills and connected apps from your existing Claude account, and it can reach the 6,000 plus connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. The launch examples cover the tools a small company already lives in.

AreaNamed integrationsWhat Duet can do there
CommunicationGmail, Slack, LinkedInSummarize, flag, draft replies for your approval
Finance and payrollQuickBooks, Stripe, GustoPull numbers, build forecasts, prepare actions
Sales and documentsHubSpot, DocuSignTrack deals, prepare paperwork to sign
Design and commerceCanva, ShopifyEdit designs, handle store tasks

Duet can also make business purchases through Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay, with approval steps and virtual card handling on the Link side. Shopify said this is the first time Shop Pay opens in agents to stores that are not on Shopify. Support for 1Password logins is planned for later.

The approval line is the real feature

An agent that acts on its own is only useful if you trust where it stops. Anthropic draws the boundary clearly. Duet can read, draft and prepare work independently. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it has to show you the proposed action and wait.

Who decides what: Claude Duet’s permission zones Based on Anthropic’s launch description of the research preview Does on its own Reads your connected apps Writes the morning brief Drafts replies and documents Builds dashboards, forecasts Works on its own cloud machine Stops and asks you Sending a message Making a payment Signing a document Deleting anything Sensitive data like health or finances needs explicit orders Not allowed Securities trading Transfers between accounts A separate classifier also blocks sharing credit card numbers and government ID numbers

Summary of the permission model described at launch. Anthropic may change it as the preview evolves.

On security, Anthropic says Duet’s sign-in credential handling follows the design of Claude Managed Agents, and that its action controls draw on the classifier already used for Claude and Claude Code. Red teams and an outside security firm tested it, and it is covered by Anthropic’s bug bounty program. Those are the company’s claims, and a research preview is exactly where real-world mistakes tend to show up, so treat them as a starting point.

The need for guardrails is not abstract. Security teams are already arguing that software agents deserve the same scrutiny as people with access, which is the point of Microsoft’s recent push to treat AI agents like insider threats. An always-on assistant with access to your inbox and your payment tools is a good test of that idea.

Where Duet fits in a crowded race

Duet arrives a few weeks after OpenAI launched Dots, its own proactive agent, and after Meta’s Muse became one of the fastest-growing AI apps. TechCrunch’s reporting shows Muse passing 10 million users, with shopping among its top activities. We covered the model behind that app when Meta shipped its first frontier model.

The common thread is a shift from “ask and answer” to “watch and nudge.” Anthropic is leaning on its strength with business tools and its safety reputation. Retailers are making similar moves on the buying side, and we looked at how Walmart is opening its checkout to AI agents while Amazon pushes them away.

    The catches Anthropic admits to

Read this before you join the waitlist

    • Duet may misread a thread or rank urgency badly, so expect some false alarms and some misses
    • Personal errands are less developed than work tasks
    • You cannot yet watch its browser while it works
    • Background checks use your plan’s usage limits, and bigger projects need more model turns
    • Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet

The usage point deserves attention. Because Duet checks your apps every few hours, it spends allowance even on days you never open it. Heavy Pro users in particular should watch how quickly the meter moves in the first week.

    Who should care

    • Freelancers and small business owners juggling email, invoices and scheduling are the clear target.
    • Privacy-minded users should read the connector permissions carefully, since Duet works best when it can see a lot.
    • Everyone else can simply watch how the preview goes. Anthropic says early feedback will decide how Duet and the main Claude app work together.

    The bottom line

Claude Duet is a bet that the next useful AI is one that comes to you. The approval rules are sensible and the connector list is broad. What nobody knows yet is whether it can tell a real emergency from background noise, because that judgment is the whole product. If you are on Pro or Max in the US, joining the waitlist costs nothing. Just go in expecting a preview, not a finished assistant.
