During the latest hangout for webmasters, Google employee John Muller answered a question about the length of the URL and the impact of this factor on SEO.

According to him, you need to make sure that the URL does not exceed 1000 characters. Although rarely any URLs reach this mark, such things as parameters and subfolders can significantly increase their length.

As for the impact on SEO, while the URL does not exceed 1000 characters, from the point of view of Google, there is nothing to worry about. At the same time, SEO usually recommends making URLs short and avoiding too long.

As for web browsers, they are able to handle URLs of up to 2000 characters.

Recall, earlier this month, Google urged webmasters to use the URL Settings tool with care.
