Apple’s first foldable reached customers on Friday, October 23. By Sunday, Reddit and the MacRumors forums had a new kind of iPhone Duo photo: an inner screen with a hairline crack down the fold, and next to it a bright white band of pixels that would not turn off.
On Monday, Apple confirmed the problem is real. In a statement given to CNBC, 9to5Mac and TechRadar, the company said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units” and told affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.
That is the short version, and for most early buyers it is good news. The longer version is more interesting, because it involves a hinge built from more than 100 parts, a teardown that points at one specific spot under the screen, and a repair bill that jumps from zero to $999 the day your warranty runs out.
What owners are actually seeing
The reports are strikingly consistent, which is part of why people took them seriously so quickly. Owners describe the same sequence:
- A crunch or a crack sound while opening or closing the phone.
- A thin vertical line running down the center of the inner screen, right on the fold.
- A thicker bright white band stretching horizontally across the right side of the panel.
- In several cases, all of this within the first day. One owner in Australia said his Duo failed after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings.
Macworld also noted reports involving Apple Store demo units, which matters. A demo phone on a table gets opened and closed hundreds of times by strangers, but it is never in a pocket, never sat on, and never dropped into a bag with keys.
Just as telling is what did not happen. Reviewers who had the Duo for a week or more before launch did not report anything similar. That points away from a design that breaks for everyone and toward something that varies from unit to unit.
How many phones are affected?
Nobody outside Apple knows, and Apple is not saying beyond “a small number.” The public numbers are rough at best:
| Source | What it said |
|---|---|
| Apple | “A small number of iPhone Duo units.” Most units are not affected, and the problem tends to show up soon after purchase. |
| 9to5Mac | About 10 unique, legitimate cases counted as of Sunday, October 25. |
| Bloomberg | A growing number of complaints on Monday, October 26. |
| MacRumors | Some viral images appear to be AI-generated fakes. |
| Pre-launch reviewers | No similar failures reported during testing. |
Keep the scale in mind. Pre-orders sold out within minutes on October 16, and US online ship dates for every configuration slipped to January 25. Even a few hundred failures would be a tiny fraction of the phones that shipped on day one. That said, a $1,999 phone does not need a high failure rate to become a story. It needs a photo, and there are now plenty of those.
What iFixit thinks is going on
The most useful clue so far comes from iFixit, which tore the Duo down over launch weekend. It CT scanned the phone, studied Apple’s patents and built a 3D model of the hinge, then mapped where owners’ screens were failing onto that model.
The breaks cluster in one place. Not exactly where the display’s flex cable crosses through the hinge, but slightly lower, at the point where that cable gap meets the central hinge support. Several edges meet there and change how the very thin display is supported as it bends.
“All those edges meeting in this spot mean lots of possible culprits,” iFixit wrote. It listed several:
- A support bar that does not fully retract as the phone closes, leaving it pressing on the back of the display.
- A trapped particle, like a grain of sand, getting caught between the panel and the hinge.
- Pressure or repeated bending concentrated at that one transition point.
- A manufacturing defect in a specific batch of panels or hinges.
iFixit technician Shahram Mokhtari added a practical observation: many damage reports describe “folding or unfolding the phone, hearing a crunch, and pushing past it.” And right where the damage happens, he said, the hinge is shaped a little differently. CEO Kyle Wiens summed it up more bluntly on X: the hinge is “dozens of parts, with ludicrous precision,” and “a manufacturing variance or grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel it protects.”
Apple has not commented on iFixit’s findings. It did, however, quietly publish a support page on Sunday titled “iPhone Duo Troubleshooting Hinge Issues.” It covers a phone that will not open or close fully, unexpected noises while folding, and enclosure damage that affects the hinge. Its advice: remove third-party cases and screen protectors, check for particles or dust along the hinge, and look for dents or scratches on the frame.
If your iPhone Duo cracks, do this
Apple’s guidance is short, but there are a few details that will save you time and possibly money.
2. Photograph it → Take clear photos of the crack and any white lines, plus the date.
3. Call Apple, not your carrier → AppleCare at 1-800-APLCARE, or Apple support at 800-275-2273. Carrier buyers included.
4. No AppleCare+ needed → This is handled under the standard one-year warranty.
5. Remember the return window → Apple’s 14-day return window still applies to new purchases.
6. Expect a wait → Stores have swapped units in person, but stock is tight, so some owners are waiting.
Based on Apple’s statement and guidance reported by 9to5Mac, Macworld and Tom’s Guide.
One more tip from experience with earlier foldables: before you hand the phone over, make sure you have a fresh backup and know your Apple Account password. A replacement Duo means setting up from scratch, and you do not want to discover a stale iCloud backup at the Genius Bar.
The real catch: what this costs after the warranty
Right now, early buyers are covered. The question owners should be asking is what happens if a hinge problem like this shows up in month 13 instead of hour 6.
Apple lists an out-of-warranty inner display repair at $999, exactly half the Duo’s $1,999 starting price. As we noted in our look at the iPhone Duo’s record iFixit repairability score, that figure is the single biggest blot on an otherwise impressive teardown. With AppleCare+, the inner display service fee drops to $99.
Compare that with the competition. According to iFixit’s comparison, the equivalent repair on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold runs between $419 and $579. Apple’s price is roughly double, on a phone where the most delicate part sits on top of a 100-component hinge.
There is a cheaper fix for cosmetic wear. Apple made the Duo’s top screen layer swappable, and as we covered when Apple announced it, replacing that crease layer costs $19 with AppleCare. But that layer only handles scratches and a tired crease finish. A crack in the panel underneath is a full display job.
| Your situation | What it likely costs |
|---|---|
| Crack from this defect, first year | $0, replacement through AppleCare |
| Within 14 days of purchase | $0, return or replacement |
| Accidental damage, with AppleCare+ | $99 service fee |
| Scratched or worn crease finish | $19 with AppleCare, $49 without |
| Any inner display crack, no coverage | $999 |
If you bought a Duo and skipped AppleCare+, this episode is a good reason to reconsider while you still can. Apple usually lets you add it within 60 days of purchase in the US.
We have seen this movie before
Foldables and fragile inner screens go back to the very first mainstream model. In 2019, Samsung had to delay the original Galaxy Fold after reviewers’ units broke within days, some because a protective layer was peeled off and others because debris got under the display at the hinge. Samsung redesigned the hinge gaps, relaunched months later and spent the next few generations rebuilding trust.
Apple’s situation is different in important ways. The Duo shipped after years of rumored development, reviewers did not hit the problem, and Apple acknowledged it within about 72 hours of launch rather than letting it drag on. If the failures turn out to be a bad batch, swapped quickly and quietly, this could fade fast.
The stakes are high for Apple beyond this one phone. The Duo is the first marquee product under John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook as CEO on September 1. Apple shares slipped 1.1% on Monday as the reports spread. And on November 2, Apple reports its fiscal fourth quarter results. That quarter ended before the Duo shipped, but it will be the first earnings call since launch, and the hinge will almost certainly come up.
Should you still buy an iPhone Duo?
Our honest take: this is not a reason to cancel an order, but it is a reason to treat the first two weeks with a new Duo as a test period.
- If you already have one and it works fine, the evidence so far says the problem tends to appear early. Open and close it normally, keep the hinge clean, and if you ever hear a crunch, stop and get it checked rather than forcing it.
- If yours is still on order, your phone may come from later production, after Apple has had time to look at the failures. Check it carefully when it arrives and remember the 14-day window.
- If you were on the fence, waiting a few weeks to see whether Apple identifies a cause, or whether reports stop, costs you nothing given January ship dates anyway.
Durability was already the open question for this phone. Lab testing showed the crease growing with use, as HTX Studio found when it folded a Duo 3,000 times. The cracking reports are a different issue, but they feed the same worry.
FAQ
Why is my iPhone Duo screen cracking at the hinge?
Apple has not named a cause. iFixit’s analysis found the damage clusters just below where the display cable crosses the hinge, at the central hinge support. Possible causes include a support bar that does not fully retract, a trapped particle, concentrated bending stress or a manufacturing defect.
Will Apple replace a cracked iPhone Duo for free?
Yes, if it is affected by this issue. Apple says owners who see problems with the inner display should contact AppleCare for a replacement. AppleCare+ is not required, and phones bought through a carrier should go to Apple directly.
How many iPhone Duo units are affected?
Apple says only a small number. 9to5Mac counted about 10 unique, verified cases by October 25, Bloomberg reported growing complaints the next day, and some viral photos were AI-generated fakes. No precise figure has been published.
Is there an iPhone Duo recall?
No. Apple has not announced a recall or a formal repair program. It is replacing affected units on request and has published a hinge troubleshooting support page.
How much does an iPhone Duo inner screen replacement cost?
Out of warranty, Apple charges $999. With AppleCare+, the service fee for inner display damage is $99. Swapping only the top cover layer costs $19 with AppleCare or $49 without.
