Every year at IFA there is one device that exists mainly to make you stop walking. This year Oukitel brought three of them, and the one people kept photographing has a 16,000mAh battery bolted inside a phone you could still, technically, put in a pocket.
The WP70 Ultra is not a phone most readers will buy. That is fine. It is interesting for a different reason: it is a clean demonstration of how much the ceiling has moved on what a battery can do inside a handset, and how quickly the rugged category has stopped being an embarrassing corner of the market.
Oukitel’s own claim is that this is the “slimmest 16,000mAh rugged smartphone.” That is a carefully built sentence with three qualifiers in it, and it is still, on the numbers, a fair one.

Three Times the Battery, Twice the Thickness
Numbers like 16,000mAh stop meaning anything without something to hold them against, so here is the comparison that matters.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max ships with a 5,088mAh cell in its eSIM only configuration, and slightly less in versions that still make room for a physical SIM tray. The Galaxy S26 Ultra sits at 5,000mAh. Those are large batteries by flagship standards. The WP70 Ultra carries more than three of them.
The thickness is where the compromise shows up. At 16.4mm the WP70 Ultra is roughly twice as deep as a typical flagship, which lands around 8mm. Nobody should pretend that is slim in any normal sense.
What makes the claim defensible is the ratio rather than the number. Rugged phones with half this capacity have historically been just as thick, because they were built out of ordinary lithium ion cells wrapped in enough rubber and metal to survive a drop onto concrete. Getting to 16,000mAh without going past 17mm is the actual achievement here.
Why This Is Suddenly Possible
The enabling technology is silicon carbon, and it is the same shift that has been quietly reshaping the mainstream Android market all year.
Conventional phone batteries use graphite anodes, which cap out at around 372mAh of capacity per gram of material. Silicon holds far more lithium per gram, and blending it into the anode lets a manufacturer put meaningfully more energy into the same physical volume. The tradeoff is that silicon swells as it charges, which is why the technology took years to become reliable enough to ship, and why the blends in real phones are conservative rather than pure silicon.
The result is that capacity numbers which sounded absurd two years ago are now routine on Chinese phones. The practical read on 16,000mAh
A modern flagship with a 5,000mAh cell gets most people through a day and a half of ordinary use. Triple the capacity does not automatically mean triple the runtime, because the screen, the modem and the chipset all draw the same power regardless, but the scaling is close enough to be meaningful.
For someone working a week away from an outlet, that is the whole pitch. For everyone else it is a heavier phone that you charge on Sunday instead of Tuesday.
The Thermal Camera Is the Real Feature
Battery capacity is what gets the headline, but it is the sensor package that separates this from a phone with a power bank glued to the back.
The WP70 Ultra carries a thermal imaging sensor alongside a 108MP main camera and a dedicated 64MP night vision camera. Oukitel describes the thermal system as helping you “identify risks and locate heat sources” in total darkness, smoke or fog. That is an accurate description of what thermal imaging does, and it is genuinely useful work: finding a failing electrical connection, tracing where a building is leaking heat, spotting an animal in undergrowth at night.
It is worth setting expectations on quality, though, because this is where marketing language tends to outrun the hardware. Phone integrated thermal sensors have clustered around 256 by 192 pixels for the last few generations. That is a real thermal image, not a gimmick, and it is enough to find a hot spot reliably. It is also a long way from the resolution a dedicated inspection camera offers, and phrases like “pro grade” should be read with that in mind.

The 64MP night vision camera is the more unusual inclusion. Very few phones ship a dedicated infrared sensitive sensor with its own illuminator, and having one alongside thermal covers the two situations that defeat a normal camera in the dark for completely different reasons. Thermal shows you heat through smoke. Night vision shows you detail when there is almost no light. They are not interchangeable, and a phone carrying both is genuinely rare.
The Rest of the Spec Sheet
Outside the headline features, the WP70 Ultra is a mid range phone, and that is worth being blunt about.

The Dimensity 7200 is a competent mid range chip and a sensible choice, because sustained battery life matters more than benchmark scores in this category and a flagship processor would fight the entire premise of the device. Android 16 at launch is more of a concern. Shipping a phone on the previous version in September, with no stated update commitment, is the part of the budget rugged market that has never improved.
It Was Not Even the Weirdest Phone on the Stand

Three phones, three different definitions of rugged
Oukitel WP600. A rugged gaming phone with dual fan active cooling, a Dimensity 8300, up to 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, plus customizable RGB lighting on a yellow and black body. It carries a 10,000mAh battery with 45W charging, IP68 and IP69K ratings and MIL-STD-810H testing. Those memory numbers are startling in 2026 for reasons we will come back to.
Oukitel WP63. A 20,000mAh phone with a built in electric igniter, a camping light and a loud speaker. It charges at 33W and does 18W reverse charging. It is, as far as anyone can tell, the first rugged phone with a lighter in it.
That last one is easy to laugh at, and the laughter is partly deserved. But it does clarify the strategy. Oukitel is not trying to sell you a better phone. It is selling a phone that replaces two or three other objects you would otherwise carry, and the customer it has in mind is someone for whom carrying fewer objects is a real benefit.
Who Should Actually Care
The honest audience for the WP70 Ultra is narrow and specific: people whose work or hobbies put them somewhere without an outlet for days at a time, and who would find a thermal camera useful often enough to value having one in their pocket.
That covers electricians, HVAC and building inspection work, forestry, surveying, search and rescue volunteers, and a certain kind of serious hiker. For those people the combination on offer here has no real mainstream equivalent, and the battery removes the single biggest anxiety of working off grid.
For everyone else, the tradeoffs are severe. You are carrying double the thickness and a considerable amount of extra weight every day to solve a problem that a normal phone and a small power bank solves for less money and less bulk. The compact phone crowd, who have been arguing for years that phones should get smaller rather than larger, will find this device close to offensive, and we have written about the opposite end of that argument more than once.
There is also a middle path worth knowing about. The Bottom Line
The WP70 Ultra is a specialist tool that happens to be shaped like a phone, and it should be judged that way. On those terms it is a strong package: a battery that genuinely changes what is possible in the field, two sensors that solve real problems in the dark, and a thickness that, given the capacity, is far better than it has any right to be.
The gaps are the ordinary ones for this corner of the market. There is no price, no release date, no update commitment, and a launch on last year’s Android. Those are the details that decide whether a device like this is a genuine work tool or a spec sheet that gets abandoned after eighteen months, and none of them were answered at IFA.
What the phone does prove, regardless of whether it ever ships in your country, is that the battery ceiling has moved and it is not moving back. A 16,000mAh phone existed on a show floor this week. The interesting question is how long before that stops sounding remarkable at all.
