Gran Turismo 7 Is Bringing Back a Circuit That Vanished After GT6, and It’s Only Half the Update

Gran Turismo 7 is about to get its biggest shake-up since launch, and Polyphony Digital buried the lede. Tucked inside an otherwise routine roadmap post is the return of Autumn Ring, a circuit that has not appeared in a mainline Gran Turismo game since Gran Turismo 6 left the PS3 behind. That alone would be enough to make longtime fans sit up. It is only one line item in a much bigger free update called Spec IV, and Sony is rolling it out in two separate drops before the end of the year.

The announcement comes from Kazunori Yamauchi, the president of Polyphony Digital and the series’ original creator, in a post on the PlayStation Blog published September 3, 2026. The timing is not an accident. 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of the original Gran Turismo, and Spec IV is being framed as the opening act of that celebration rather than a standalone patch.

    Fast Facts

    • Spec IV is a free update for Gran Turismo 7, split into an October part and a December part.
    • Two circuits are joining the roster: Sportsland SUGO in October and Autumn Ring in December.
    • Twelve new cars arrive in total, six per drop, with six already confirmed.
    • December adds a Family mode, the return of Shuffle Racing, and Online Drift Trials.
    • More details land October 3 during Round 3 of the Gran Turismo World Series in Singapore.

Why splitting the update into two parts actually makes sense

Polyphony’s own explanation is refreshingly blunt: there is simply too much content to ship at once. Rather than delay everything until every piece is polished, the studio is front-loading the update with quality of life features in October, then saving the two showpiece additions (Autumn Ring and Family mode) for a December release that reads almost like a holiday gift to the community.

That structure mirrors a pattern Sony has leaned on across its live-service catalog this year. The September State of Play already signaled that PlayStation Studios is treating existing games as ongoing platforms rather than finished products, and Spec IV is the clearest example yet of that philosophy applied to a racing sim that is already three and a half years old.

    • Six of the twelve new cars.
    • A new Spec IV opening cinematic.
    • Vintage, a dedicated section for cars no longer sold new in the in-game dealerships.
    • Car Concierge, a service for special-ordering Used and Legend cars instead of hunting for them manually.

    • Car Viewer, a dedicated tool for admiring and inspecting cars already sitting in your garage.
    • A higher Collector Level cap for players who have already maxed out their garage progression.

    What’s saved for December

    • The remaining six new cars.

The circuit that disappeared for over a decade

Autumn Ring is not a flashy real-world circuit like Suzuka or Le Mans. It is a fictional track that has been part of Gran Turismo’s DNA since the very first game in 1997, a tight, tree-lined ribbon of asphalt that generations of players learned to drift on long before online leaderboards existed. It carried through several sequels before quietly disappearing from the lineup after Gran Turismo 6. Gran Turismo 7 launched in 2022 without it, and Polyphony has spent the years since fielding requests to bring it back.

December’s version will not simply be a reskin of the old track. Alongside the classic layout, Polyphony is adding what it describes as a greatly expanded configuration, giving veteran drivers a reason to relearn a circuit they thought they already knew by heart.

    The cars confirmed so far

Polyphony has only shown half of the twelve new cars ahead of the October update, but the six revealed already span a wide slice of automotive history:

    • BMW M5 (E60), the naturally aspirated V10 executive sedan that remains a cult favorite among sim racers.
    • Honda / MUGEN MOTUL CIVIC Si Race Car ’87, a Group A touring car straight out of Japan’s domestic racing scene in the late 1980s.
    • Citroën 2CV Charleston, an unmistakable, decades-old economy car that is as much a design icon as it is a vehicle.
    • Honda Stepwgn Spada, a Japanese-market minivan added purely for the joy of driving something nobody expects to see on a racetrack.
    • Mazda RX-VISION GT3 EVO, a fictional racing concept built specifically for the Gran Turismo universe.
    • Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo, the tech company’s own concept-car contribution to the long-running Vision GT program.

The mix says a lot about where Gran Turismo 7 is positioning itself heading into its anniversary year: equal parts motorsport pedigree, everyday nostalgia, and pure novelty. It is a lineup built to be shown off in Car Viewer just as much as it is built to be raced.

Where this fits in a rocky year for live-service games

Zelda Has Never Had Its Own Nintendo Direct. That Changes on September 8.

Spec IV’s free, generous scope stands in sharp contrast to some of the other live-service decisions PlayStation owners have had to swallow lately. Just last week, Splitgate’s servers went dark as part of a wave of PlayStation game shutdowns, a reminder that not every online title gets the long-term investment Gran Turismo 7 is receiving.

Against that backdrop, Sony pouring two new circuits, twelve cars, an accessibility-focused Family mode, and a smarter AI opponent into a title that already shipped years ago sends a clear signal about which of its live-service games it considers a flagship worth protecting.

    What we still don’t know

Polyphony has been unusually coy about exact Collector Level numbers, the deeper mechanics behind Family mode, and the six cars still being held back for December. The studio has confirmed that a fuller breakdown will arrive on October 3 during Round 3 of the Gran Turismo World Series in Singapore, which will be broadcast live. Expect gameplay footage of both new circuits and a first proper look at Family mode in action around that date, with the October portion of Spec IV likely landing on consoles shortly after.

For a game already sitting on one of the deepest car lists in the genre, Spec IV looks less like maintenance and more like Polyphony clearing its throat before a much louder 30th anniversary announcement in 2027.
