“TurboTax 2026” means one of two things depending on when you are asking. Right now it usually refers to the software for tax year 2026, the return you will file in spring 2027, which Intuit has not released yet and historically puts on sale in November with the online version following in early December. If you are looking back instead, the 2026 filing season covered tax year 2025: the IRS began accepting returns on January 26, 2026, and the deadline was April 15, 2026.
Quick answer
The tax year 2026 version of TurboTax is not out yet. Based on every previous cycle, expect the desktop editions around November 2026 and the online version in early December, with the IRS opening for electronic returns in late January 2027. Intuit no longer publishes fixed online prices: what you pay is set at the moment you print or file. Service codes are real but they are not public coupons, they are issued one at a time by TurboTax support staff, and one return can accept only one.
This page covers what is actually known rather than what coupon sites claim: the release pattern, how pricing works now that Intuit stopped publishing it, which version genuinely costs nothing and for whom, and what a service code is according to Intuit’s own documentation. It is updated as each stage of the season opens.

Which TurboTax are you actually looking for?
Tax software is named confusingly on purpose, because the product sold in one calendar year handles the previous year’s income. Intuit brands the current boxes “2025 to 2026”, which is why a search for TurboTax 2026 turns up two different products.
| If you want to file | You need | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 income, in 2026 | The current product, branded 2025 to 2026 | On sale now. The deadline has passed, so this is for extensions, amendments and late returns. |
| 2026 income, in 2027 | The tax year 2026 product | Not released. Expect desktop around November 2026, online in early December. |
| An older year | That year’s desktop edition | Prior year returns cannot be filed on TurboTax Online. Desktop only, and older years must be mailed. |
Release timeline
Intuit does not pre announce a hard release date, but the cycle has been consistent for years. Desktop editions go up for order in the autumn and ship in November. TurboTax Online opens in early December, which lets you start a return and enter W2 information before any official form is available. Neither of those is the date that matters most, because nothing can actually be transmitted until the IRS opens its systems, and that has landed in the second half of January every recent year. For the season just finished, the IRS opened on January 26, 2026 and closed on April 15.
Note
Starting a return in December does not mean filing in December. TurboTax will hold a completed return and transmit it the moment the IRS opens. Employers have until the end of January to issue W2 forms, and brokerage statements often arrive in February, so an early return filed before every document has landed is the single most common cause of having to amend later.
What TurboTax costs in 2026
This is harder to answer than it used to be, and not by accident. Intuit no longer prints a fixed price next to each online tier. The product pages say prices are determined by the product you end up using and by the time of print or electronic filing, and are subject to change without notice. In practice that means the price can rise between the day you start and the day you file, and prices typically do rise as the April deadline approaches.
Desktop pricing works the traditional way, because it is a boxed product with a number on it. Every desktop edition includes five federal returns and one state program download. State electronic filing is charged separately on top of that, which is the line most people miss when comparing desktop against online.
Tip
If you prepare returns for more than one person in your household, desktop is almost always cheaper, because those five federal returns are included in one purchase. Online charges per return. A family filing three returns usually pays less for one desktop licence than for three online ones, even after the state filing fee.
What is genuinely free, and for whom
TurboTax Free Edition exists and it does cost nothing, but it fits a narrow return. Intuit’s own disclosure puts it at roughly 37 percent of filers, limited to a simple Form 1040 with no schedules beyond the earned income credit, child tax credit, student loan interest and Schedule 1A. It covers W2 income, small amounts of interest and dividend income, the standard deduction and taxable retirement distributions.
It does not cover itemised deductions, unemployment income, business or contractor income, stock or cryptocurrency sales, or rental property. Hitting any one of those inside the free product moves you to a paid tier, usually well into the process, which is exactly the pattern that got Intuit into trouble.
In January 2024 the Federal Trade Commission issued a final order finding that Intuit had advertised TurboTax as free deceptively, because most people who saw those advertisements could not use the free product. The order requires Intuit to stop calling a product free unless it is free for everyone, or else to disclose clearly, next to the free claim, the percentage of people who qualify, along with every condition attached. The 37 percent figure on TurboTax’s own pages is that order in action.
Worth knowing separately: TurboTax is not part of IRS Free File. Intuit left the programme in 2021. IRS Free File still exists with other providers and has an income limit, and the IRS also offers Free File Fillable Forms to anyone regardless of income, with no guidance attached.
TurboTax service codes: how they actually work
This is the most misrepresented topic in tax software. Hundreds of pages publish lists of “TurboTax service codes” that read like coupon codes. According to Intuit’s own support documentation, that is not what they are.
A service code applies a discount to the TurboTax Online fee, and Intuit states plainly that the codes “are provided by our specialists for specific, predetermined reasons, and aren’t considered coupons.” Each one is valid for a specified tax year, can be used only once, and a single return cannot accept more than one. In other words, a code is issued to one person by a support representative, usually to resolve a billing problem or a service complaint, and it is spent the moment it is used.
That has a practical consequence. A code published on a public list has either already been redeemed, was never valid, or is a general promotional offer being relabelled as a service code for traffic. If you have a legitimate billing dispute, contacting TurboTax support directly is the actual route to a code. There is no public pool to draw from. Our separate page on TurboTax service codes goes into the referral and early filing offers that are genuinely public.
Warning
Never enter personal or payment details on a third party site that offers to “generate” a TurboTax service code. Codes are only ever entered inside your own TurboTax return, on the fees screen, and no legitimate code requires you to hand your information to anyone else first.
Where to enter a service code
If you do have one, it goes in during filing, not at checkout in a separate basket. Sign in and open your return, choose File from the menu, continue to the filing steps screen, and select Start next to Step 1. Scroll to the bottom of the fees list and select the option reading “I have a service code”, then follow the prompts. Enter it before you pay, since it applies to the fee rather than refunding one already charged.
What actually saves money
Since public service codes are mostly fiction, here is what genuinely reduces the bill. File early in the season, because online pricing rises as April approaches and the figure quoted in February is frequently lower than the one in April. Buy desktop rather than online if more than one person in the household is filing. Check whether your bank, credit union, employer or a membership organisation offers a TurboTax discount, since those partner offers are real, are applied through a specific link, and are the closest thing to a public coupon that exists. And check whether you qualify for IRS Free File with another provider before paying anything at all.
One more: decline the option to have the fee deducted from your refund. It carries a processing charge that is usually larger than any discount you were chasing, and paying by card up front avoids it entirely.
Frequently asked questions
When will TurboTax 2026 be available?
The tax year 2026 software has not been released. Intuit has followed the same cycle for years: desktop editions ship around November, TurboTax Online opens in early December, and nothing can actually be transmitted until the IRS begins accepting returns, which has fallen in the second half of January every recent season.
When did the 2026 tax season open and close?
The IRS began accepting and processing tax year 2025 returns on January 26, 2026. The federal deadline was Wednesday, April 15, 2026. If you missed it, you can still file late or amend, but you need the current product rather than the upcoming one.
What is a TurboTax service code?
A code that discounts the TurboTax Online fee. Intuit says these are provided by its specialists for specific, predetermined reasons and are not coupons. Each is valid for one tax year, can be used only once, and one return can accept only one code. Lists of public service codes are not a reliable source.
Where do I enter a TurboTax service code?
Sign in and open your return, select File, continue to the filing steps screen, then select Start next to Step 1. Scroll to the bottom of the fees list, choose “I have a service code” and follow the prompts. Enter it before paying, because it discounts the fee rather than refunding a completed payment.
Is TurboTax really free?
For roughly 37 percent of filers, by Intuit’s own disclosure. Free Edition handles a simple Form 1040 with only a few credits attached. Itemised deductions, unemployment income, self employment, investment sales and rental property all push you into a paid tier. That disclosure exists because of a 2024 FTC order over advertising TurboTax as free to people who could not use it.
Is desktop or online TurboTax cheaper?
Desktop is usually cheaper for households filing more than one return, because each purchase includes five federal returns and one state program. Online is priced per return. Factor in the separate state electronic filing fee on desktop before deciding, and remember that online pricing is not fixed and tends to climb toward the April deadline.
The bottom line
If you are here for the tax year 2026 release, it is not out and November is the realistic month to watch, with nothing transmittable until the IRS opens in late January. If you are here for a discount, the honest answer is that service codes are not a public resource, and the real savings are in filing early, choosing desktop for multiple returns, using a genuine partner offer and refusing the refund processing fee.
