Apple released iOS 27.2 on Monday, October 26, and it is the first big feature update since iOS 27 arrived in September. There is no iOS 27.1 for most people, by the way. That version number went only to the iPhone Duo, which shipped with it on October 23.
The headline features are about Siri: it can now remember what you talked about last week, pull answers from more of your personal data, and speak five more languages. But the most important number in this release is not a feature at all. It is 163, the count of security vulnerabilities Apple fixed, according to its own security notes.
That matters more than usual, because Apple also revealed that roughly 80% of iPhone owners are still running iOS 26. If you are one of them, there is a separate update for you too. Here is what is new, who gets what, and whether you should hit install today.
Siri gets a memory
When the new Siri arrived with iOS 27, it was hidden behind a waitlist and noticeably forgetful. Every request started from zero. iOS 27.2 changes that in four ways.
- Conversation memory. Siri AI can recall past conversations, so you can ask about something it told you before. Apple’s own example: the restaurants it recommended last week.
- More personal sources. Siri can now draw on photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, your voicemails, and gives better results from Safari history and Reading List.
- Excluded Apps. One new setting lets you choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions are allowed to access. This is the privacy control people asked for when the new Siri launched.
- Granular text selection. You can select and copy just part of a Siri answer instead of the whole thing. Small, but you will use it constantly.
The language list also grows. Siri AI now works in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, all labeled beta. That makes the new Siri useful for far more households in the US, where Spanish support in particular has been a long-standing request.
Everything else new in iOS 27.2
Beyond Siri, the update touches almost every built-in app. Here is the complete list from Apple’s release notes, plus a few things testers found.
| App or area | What changed |
|---|---|
| Messages | Suggestions offer shortcuts based on the conversation, like adding a dinner invite to Calendar or a task to Reminders. You can choose which suggestion types appear in Settings. |
| Apple Music | New black and white icon replaces the red one. Blue replaces red as the accent color, and widgets get black backgrounds. |
| Photos | SynthID watermarking helps identify images generated or modified with AI tools. Shared Albums can edit captions and comments, avoid duplicates and warn before an album expires. |
| FaceTime | Dual Capture now works in Group FaceTime, showing front and rear cameras at once. You can add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call. |
| Apple TV app | Simple Profiles give each person their own recommendations. Multiview on iPhone shows up to four live sports streams at once. |
| Podcasts | Home tab splits into New Episodes and Continue Playing. |
| Games | Friends tab explains friend suggestions and shows recent games on friends’ pages. |
| Home | Lock After Closing and Door Left Open alerts for compatible smart locks. HomePod gets Lock Controls to stop accidental taps from starting audio. |
| iPhone Duo only | Apple Pencil support (USB-C model only) and Edge Light to brighten your face on video calls. |
The Messages suggestions are the sleeper hit here. They sound minor, but they turn the most common “let me copy this into my calendar” moment into one tap. SynthID is the most consequential long-term change: Apple adopting Google’s watermarking standard for edited and generated images is a quiet signal that the industry is converging on one way to label AI imagery, rather than each company inventing its own.
What iPhone Duo owners get
The iPhone Duo has its own release notes, and its two exclusive features are both about the big inner screen.
Apple Pencil support was promised for “later this year” at launch and arrives now, in apps like Notes and Preview. There is an important limit: only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) works. The Apple Pencil Pro and older models are not supported, so if you were hoping to share your iPad’s Pencil Pro with your phone, that will not work.
Edge Light brightens your face during video calls, which is handy given how often the Duo will be propped open on a desk for FaceTime.
One thing iOS 27.2 is not: a fix for the inner screen cracks some owners have reported. That is a hardware issue, and Apple is handling it with replacements. We cover what to do in our guide to the iPhone Duo inner display cracking problem.
Which iPhones get which features
This is where iOS 27.2 gets confusing, because the update reaches a wide range of phones but the best features need recent hardware.
The short version: if your iPhone can run iOS 27, it can run iOS 27.2. Whether it gets the new Siri depends entirely on the chip and memory inside.
The security story is bigger than the features
Apple’s security notes for iOS 27.2 list 163 separate CVE entries, covering everything from image processing in the Accelerate framework to Bluetooth accessories. That is a big batch even by Apple’s standards, and TechCrunch noted that many of the fixes were also backported to older software.
The scariest line is in the smallest update. iOS 18.7.11, for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, fixes a CoreGraphics bug (CVE-2026-86950) where processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple says it is aware of a report that this issue “may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27.” That is the wording Apple typically uses when spyware or forensic tools are involved. Meta Product Security is credited with the find.
Most people are not the target of that kind of attack. But the 80% figure is what makes this release matter. Huge numbers of people are sitting on iOS 26 by choice, many because of early reports of battery drain after the iOS 27 upgrade or because they simply do not like the new look. Apple is still shipping iOS 26.7.2 with 134 fixes for exactly those people, so staying on iOS 26 is fine. Staying on an unpatched iOS 26 is not.
What did not make it
The redesigned Health app appeared in earlier iOS 27.2 betas, then was removed before release, as we reported when we covered the iOS 27.2 release date. Apple still plans to ship it later this year. If you were updating specifically for the new Health app, this is not the release.
Should you update to iOS 27.2?
iPhone Duo owner → Update now for Apple Pencil, Edge Light and the fixes.
On iOS 26 and happy there → Install iOS 26.7.2 instead. You get the security fixes without the redesign.
iPhone XS or XR → Install iOS 18.7.11 today. It closes a flaw Apple says may have been exploited.
You rely on work or banking apps → Wait a day or two, check the app forums, then update.
To update: Settings > General > Software Update. Back up first.
A tip for the iOS 26 crowd: on the Software Update screen, Apple usually shows the iOS 26.7.2 option further down, under the iOS 27 upgrade. Tap the right one. And like any big update, expect a day or two of extra battery use while your iPhone re-indexes photos and messages in the background.
