For years, the pitch for an “AI PC” was a small chip that blurred your video call background. Microsoft’s new machines are a different animal. At an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the company revealed the price and specs of the Surface Laptop Ultra, a laptop built on Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip and designed to run AI models and agents right on the device.
The short version
- The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,600, with a stronger-chip model from $3,700 and configurations up to $5,900
- The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box workstation starts at $6,000
- Windows 11 gets Execution Containers to sandbox AI agents, and Microsoft says every Windows 11 user will get it
- Microsoft offers up to $1,000 off for a MacBook Pro trade-in
What the prices look like
Nvidia said back in June that it had agreements with Microsoft and other PC makers to build AI and agent-ready Windows PCs around its RTX Spark chip. Details were thin then. Now the numbers are in, and they are firmly premium. The cheapest Surface Laptop Ultra costs $2,600, a second base model with a more powerful chip begins at $3,700, and adding memory and storage pushes the top configuration to $5,900. Microsoft says that highest-end version is already out of stock.
The workstation and the Dell rival
Microsoft also revealed the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a desktop workstation that starts at $6,000. It ships with developer tools including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL and PowerShell 7. The target buyer is plain: a developer who wants to run models locally instead of paying per token in the cloud.
Microsoft is not alone. Dell detailed its Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, also built on RTX Spark. It is available for preorder at Best Buy for $3,800, with delivery later in October.
| Machine | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | $2,600 to $5,900 | Two base chips, top spec reportedly sold out |
| Surface RTX Spark Dev Box | From $6,000 | Comes with VS Code, Copilot CLI, WSL, PowerShell 7 |
| Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition | $3,800 | Preorder at Best Buy, ships later in October |
Execution Containers, the quiet headline
The hardware gets the price tags, but the software may matter more. These PCs run a revamped Windows 11 with a feature called Execution Containers, which Microsoft says makes it easier to sandbox AI agents. CEO Satya Nadella said it will be available to all Windows 11 users, not only the new Surface models.
Nadella’s reasoning is worth quoting in spirit: a model alone does not do much. You need orchestration, memory outside the model, and a harness layer that combines models, context, memory and the actions an agent can take. Microsoft wants Windows to be that layer, “not just for our apps but apps for anyone’s agent.” If agents are going to click, type and run code on your behalf, a container that limits the damage is a sensible start. It lines up with the push we covered in Nvidia’s plan for a separate chip to guard AI agents.
What to keep in perspective
- These are expensive. Even the base model costs more than most flagship laptops
- The pitch is local AI. The savings come from running models on-device for free, so heavy users benefit most
- Reviews are still to come. Price and specs are official, real-world battery and performance claims are not yet tested here
A direct shot at the MacBook Pro
Microsoft is clearly aiming at Apple. It is offering up to $1,000 off when you trade in a MacBook Pro, because Macs have become the default choice for developers and agent hobbyists, especially in Silicon Valley. The company also says the powerful graphics make the machines good for video work, content creation and gaming, so they are not locked to coding.
The idea of running serious AI without a data center is spreading across the industry. Qualcomm made a similar argument for phones when it showed a chip that can run a 30 billion parameter AI with no cloud. The Surface Laptop Ultra is the same bet at laptop scale, with a much bigger price tag.
Who should care
- Developers who pay heavy API bills may find local inference worth the premium
- Mac switchers get the clearest incentive, thanks to the $1,000 trade-in
- Everyone else should watch Execution Containers, since the feature is coming to regular Windows 11 anyway
The Surface Laptop Ultra is not a mass-market laptop. It is a statement that Microsoft sees the PC as the place where AI agents will live, and that it wants them contained, orchestrated and running on Windows.
