Control Resonant Just Sold 1 Million Copies in 3 Weeks, and Remedy Has Never Done That Before

Remedy Entertainment has a new record, and it took just three weeks to set it. The studio announced on October 15 that Control Resonant has passed one million copies sold, making it the fastest-selling game in Remedy’s 31-year history. It edges past Alan Wake 2, which needed about two months to reach the same mark.

A million copies in 21 days is not a blockbuster pace by 2026 standards. But for a studio that has spent two decades making acclaimed games that sell slowly, it matters. Here is what the milestone means, how the game has been received, and why the number Remedy cares about most has not been announced yet.

    The short version

    • Milestone: 1 million copies sold since the September 24 launch
    • Record: fastest-selling game in Remedy’s history, ahead of Alan Wake 2
    • Reception: Metacritic score of 83 and a “Very Positive” rating on Steam
    • Launch fix: a day-one hotfix (1.3.3) cut enemy health pools and made early combat hit harder
    • What is missing: profit figures, which arrive with Remedy’s Q3 report on November 3

    What Remedy announced

The news came from Remedy’s own social accounts, with a short thank-you to players for “playing, sharing, and being a part of the community.” CEO Jean-Charles Gaudechon called the result “a very strong start” and pointed out that this is Remedy’s first self-published release of this scale. That detail is important. Earlier games like Alan Wake 2 relied on a publisher for part of the heavy lifting, while Control Resonant ships under Remedy’s own banner, so a larger share of every sale stays with the studio.

Gaudechon also said the launch landed in “one of the most competitive windows in years alongside the industry’s biggest names.” He is not exaggerating. October 2026 has been crowded, and we have already covered several of its big releases, including the Gears of War: E-Day review roundup. With Modern Warfare 4 arriving on October 23 and GTA 6 waiting in November, Remedy picked a hard place to stand.

Forza Horizon 6 Has Earned an Estimated $579 Million, and It Has Not Even Reached PS5 Yet

Fast for Remedy, slow for everyone else

Context keeps the celebration honest. PC Gamer notes that The Blood of Dawnwalker reached one million in three days, and Wardogs did it in a single day, something we covered in our look at Wardogs selling a million copies on day one. Subnautica 2 sold twice that figure in 12 hours. Against those launches, 21 days looks leisurely.

But Remedy has never played that game. Alan Wake 2 won a pile of awards for its writing and art direction in 2023, yet it took roughly two months to pass a million copies, and it still outpaced the original Control. The studio’s pattern is critical love first and sales later, which is why a quicker start is a genuine change.

    How the game was received

Control Resonant launched on September 24, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the Standard Edition at $59.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition at $69.99. Critics have been warm, with a Metacritic score of 83, and Steam players rate it Very Positive, with about 92% of more than 8,000 reviews favorable.

PC Gamer’s review called it a gorgeous sequel but a “middling pivot to melee action.” The praise is for the world: a mutated Manhattan full of eerie pockets of normal life, and a set of traversal powers (floating, air-dashing, double-jumping and eventually flipping gravity) that make moving around a pleasure. The complaint is the fighting, which the reviewer described as a slog of inflated health pools.

The hotfix that rewrote the complaint

That criticism did not sit around for long. On launch day, Remedy shipped hotfix 1.3.3, and its Steam post named three problems: enemy health pools feeling too high, too many hits needed to Falter (stun) enemies for executions, and Dylan Faden’s early-game combat not feeling powerful enough. In PC Gamer’s words, Remedy turned the review’s advice, using the Assist Mode sliders to boost damage and Falter buildup, into the default experience.

Players who want more control still have it. Assist Mode includes granular options for enemy aggression and ability recovery, and you can even make Dylan invulnerable. Listening to feedback on day one is a good sign for a studio with its first big self-published launch.

On PC, modders are going further. The Dylan May Cry mod, covered by Wccftech, adds Devil May Cry style Trick moves (Air Trick, Trick Down and Trick Up), motion inputs for binding attacks to forward or back plus light or heavy attack, and a hold-on lock option. Remedy has not said whether any of it will make it into an official update, but the community is clearly hungry for deeper combat.

Why the number is not the real story

    QuestionWhere things stand
Is it selling?Yes, 1 million in three weeks, a studio record
Is it profitable?Unknown until the Q3 report on November 3
Are players happy?Mostly, with about 92% positive on Steam
What is the weak spot?Combat pacing, partly addressed by the 1.3.3 hotfix

Planet Zoo 2 Is Out With 85 on Metacritic, but Steam Players Are Far Less Sure

Remedy’s long-running problem is money. PC Gamer points out that Alan Wake 2 needed more than a year, and two million copies, before it actually turned a profit. Fixing that was the stated goal when Gaudechon became CEO this year, with chairman Henri Ă–sterlund saying he was appointed to lead Remedy “into a phase of profitable growth.”

Gaudechon’s closing message sounded like a plan: with Control and Alan Wake, Remedy now has “two established franchises,” and “there is a lot more to come from these worlds.” The first real look at how Resonant’s sales affected the bottom line comes on November 3.

    My take

A million copies in three weeks, from a self-published game launched into the busiest part of the year, is a solid result. It is not a runaway hit, and Remedy will need the long tail, including discounts, holiday sales and word of mouth, to turn it into the profit story its CEO wants. The fast hotfix and the Very Positive Steam score suggest the long tail is plausible.

If you have been waiting on the combat reviews, the day-one fix is probably the best reason to jump in now. Just keep Assist Mode in mind if the health bars start to feel long.
