Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, which is 17 days from now, and the most talked-about detail is not a gun or a map. It is what you will not find on launch day: Xbox Game Pass. Activision confirmed the game will not be on the subscription at launch, even though the franchise belongs to Microsoft, and the PC specs published last week show exactly what kind of machine you need if you are buying it instead.

Here is everything confirmed so far: the date and platforms, the pricing and editions, the early access and preload schedule, the full PC requirements, and the gameplay changes that Infinity Ward says are coming.

    The short version

    • Release date: October 23, 2026, at midnight local time
    • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Battle.net, Xbox on PC) and Nintendo Switch 2. No PS4 or Xbox One version.
    • Game Pass: not available at launch, per Activision
    • Campaign early access: October 16 for digital pre-orders
    • PC preload: starts October 15 at 9 AM PT
    • Reported price: $69.99 Standard, $99.99 Vault Edition
    • Modes at launch: Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ

    The Game Pass question

The pre-order benefits post on the official Call of Duty blog is blunt about it: “Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Game Pass at launch.” Activision has not said when, or whether, that changes. For anyone who got used to recent Call of Duty games showing up in the subscription on day one, this is a real change of habit, because it means buying the game outright if you want to play in the first weeks.

It also fits a pattern we have been tracking in Xbox’s strategy. The company has been rethinking what each tier gets you, and we covered how Xbox cloud gaming time limits depend on your tier only last month. Whatever the reasoning behind keeping the biggest shooter of the year off the service for now, the practical effect is simple: the sticker price matters more than usual.

    Editions and pricing

There are three versions: a digital Standard Edition on every platform, a physical Standard Edition on consoles only, and the digital Vault Edition. Activision’s pages do not list dollar amounts in the blog post, but retail listings summarized by Insider Gaming put Standard at $69.99 and the Vault Edition at $99.99. Treat those as reported prices and check your own store before paying.

The Vault Edition also qualifies for a 10% loyalty discount on pre-orders, according to Activision’s edition breakdown. The five Signature weapons are the Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and a combat knife, each with a blueprint and, for the guns, an Apex Attachment. The Operator packs unlock Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, plus four special forces units from France, Germany, South Korea and the UK.

A war on the Korean Peninsula

The story starts when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. You play Private Park, a young South Korean soldier in his first live combat, while Captain Price runs a personal, off-the-books mission that slowly collides with the forces behind the invasion. Infinity Ward says the campaign moves from trench warfare in Korea to close-quarters fighting in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and city-wide assaults to retake occupied territory.

It is a new setting for the series, and the studio says it was built with attention to the culture and military detail of the region. That is a big claim, and we will only know how well it lands once reviews arrive. For a sense of how critics are treating this month’s other big shooter, see our rundown of the Gears of War: E-Day reviews.

Multiplayer: no bloom, new movement, 500 Kill Block layouts

Multiplayer is where Infinity Ward is making its loudest promises. Under the banner of “Ballistic Authority,” the studio says bloom is gone entirely, so bullets travel from the barrel position and hipfire becomes more predictable. Recoil, convergence and weapon handling were rebuilt to follow player input more directly, and the PC post adds that muzzle effects are masked at the point of aim so targets stay visible.

Movement is also expanding, with more mantling, climbing, hanging and jumping options. The launch map list includes 12 core maps, each with its own infil, plus dedicated Gunfight maps and several Big War maps built for vehicles.

The most unusual idea is Kill Block, set inside the Westbridge Training Facility. Its modular sections rearrange between rounds, producing more than 500 distinct layouts, and it supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight formats. A new Collateral mode, aimed at Search and Destroy fans, gives everyone a pistol and in-game cash to spend between rounds. There are no respawns, no killstreaks, no health regeneration and no custom loadouts, and you lose your gear when you die.

Progression gets a rework too. Create-a-Class now merges Operators, weapons, equipment and killstreaks into one loadout, attachments are shared by weapon class, and a new helper called Gunny builds sensible close, mid or long range setups for you. Fully leveling a weapon unlocks Apex Attachments that can change how it behaves. Prestige offers two paths, Classic (resets your unlocks for faster XP) and Regular (keeps your loadouts).

PC requirements: a low floor and a very high ceiling

The official PC post from lead PC developer Beenox lists three tiers. The minimum is forgiving for the CPU and GPU, but every tier needs an SSD and 115 GB of free space.

    MinimumRecommendedRay tracing
TargetPlayable90 FPS, High, multiplayerHigh RT, 4K upscaled

    RAM8 GB16 GB32 GB
    Storage115 GB SSD115 GB SSD115 GB SSD

Two requirements deserve a warning label. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot must both be enabled to play, as part of the RICOCHET anti-cheat system, and Intel Arc cards need Resizable BAR turned on. Only Intel and AMD processors with AVX support are accepted. If your PC is a few years old, check these in your BIOS before launch day rather than after.

Upscaling, ray tracing and faster launches

Ray tracing covers reflections, shadows and lighting in all three modes, not just the campaign. For upscaling you can pick NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 or the default Filmic SMAA T2X. PC players also get an exclusive Enhanced FOV option that widens the view near the screen edges without changing the center, plus a built-in benchmark tool that runs a simulated multiplayer match and suggests settings.

Advanced Shader Delivery should shorten the first-launch wait by shipping precompiled shaders, but it needs the Xbox PC app installed. Updates will no longer force a restart at game boot either. The preload is available only to digital pre-orders, which is another small reason to commit early if you plan to buy on PC. Xbox’s wider push into physical and digital ownership is worth reading alongside this, especially our guide to how Xbox Disc to Digital works if you still buy discs.

What we still do not know

    • Exact Game Pass timing: Activision says “not at launch” and nothing more.
    • Switch 2 details: the platform is confirmed, but the pre-order and performance information has not been shared.
    • Review scores: none yet, so claims about gunplay and the campaign are still the studio’s own.
    • Full Collateral rules: Activision promises more detail closer to launch.

    Should you pre-order?

That depends on how you play. The case for pre-ordering digitally is concrete: campaign access a week early, a PC preload, and the Hunter Killer skin. The case for waiting is just as concrete: no reviews yet, no Game Pass, and a price that is hard to justify if you mostly play other games. If you want to try before you buy, the earlier beta periods are over, so the best free test now is simply watching early campaign impressions on October 16. Either way, if you are on PC, check your TPM and Secure Boot settings this week.
