Frontier Developments has spent the last few years proving it can turn park sims into a steady business, and now it has put its best-known animal game back on the table. Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the first wave of reviews is warm. The Steam crowd is a bit more divided.

Here is what the sequel adds, what it costs, what your PC needs and where the early complaints are coming from. I have flagged the spots where critics and players disagree, because on day one that happens a lot.

    The short version

    • Released: October 13, 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S
    • Price: $49.99 Standard, $64.99 Deluxe
    • New: fully aquatic and flying species, plus customizable Wildlife Reserves
    • Reception: Metacritic 85 on PC at launch, but only “Mostly Positive” on Steam
    • Catch: reviewers report bugs, escaping animals and a steep learning curve

What Planet Zoo 2 actually changes

The original Planet Zoo arrived in 2019 and became the benchmark for animal management sims. The sequel keeps the formula and widens it in two directions. First, the animal roster now includes species that live in water or spend their lives in the air. Second, your work no longer ends at the zoo gate.

According to the official Steam page, you can build freshwater and saltwater aquariums with animals like blacktip reef sharks and hawksbill turtles. You can also build fully customizable aviaries for birds such as the toco toucan and the secretarybird, using barriers, support poles and mesh covers so they can actually fly. Familiar faces like the lion and the western chimpanzee return with, in Frontier’s words, a generational leap in animal detail.

Wildlife Reserves take the game beyond the zoo

The other headline feature is conservation. Once you meet certain requirements, you can release animals into large Wildlife Reserves around the world, and you design those living ecosystems yourself. It is a clear nod to how modern zoos describe their mission, and it gives the game a goal beyond ticket sales.

Not everyone is sold on it yet. GameWatcher’s review says the reserves feel “like a test rather than a fully fleshed out alternative to zoos,” and that after taking screenshots and finishing objectives, there is little reason to stay. That is a fair early read, and it is also the kind of feature Frontier tends to deepen with patches.

The game ships with Career, Franchise and Sandbox modes, and there is a workshop for community content. Reviewers agree the onboarding is better than in Frontier’s recent Planet Coaster 2, with Career acting as a very long tutorial that hops between zoos and reserves at a brisk pace.

    ModeWhat it is
CareerA guided campaign that moves you between zoos and reserves, with clear objectives. Reviewers call it a “jumbo-sized tutorial.”
FranchiseManage several zoos and reserves at once and contribute to community goals. GameWatcher calls it the most compelling mode for system fans.
SandboxFully customizable settings and presets that you can swap on the fly. Expected to be the long-term favorite.
WorkshopCommunity blueprints and content through the Frontier Workshop.

    Price and editions

Frontier lists the Standard Edition at $49.99 and the Deluxe Edition at $64.99. Deluxe adds six extra animal species from around the world and a set of exclusive animal signs. On Steam, the Deluxe Upgrade Pack is sold separately for $17.99, and a small Bonus Content Pack is $2.99.

    PC requirements

This is not a light game. Frontier asks for 16 GB of RAM at every level, and the recommended tier wants a GPU in the RTX 3070 class. The studio also notes that Microsoft has ended support for Windows 10, so it cannot guarantee ongoing compatibility there.

    OSWindows 10 or 11 / Windows 11

    RAM16 GB / 16 GB
Storage40 GB, SSD recommended / 40 GB, SSD required

The Steam Deck is a better story than you might expect. Steam Deck HQ reports that the game works well with its built-in preset, but you will want to cap the frame rate at 30 FPS in SteamOS settings, and it logged about 2.5 hours of battery in testing.

    What critics are saying

Early scores are strong. At launch, Metacritic showed 85 on both PC (based on 15 reviews) and PS5 (based on three). Push Square scored the PS5 version 90, calling it Frontier “at its finest,” while Atomix gave 85 and Metro GameCentral 80. DualShockers and Checkpoint Gaming both went with 9/10.

    Metacritic (PC)85

    Metro GameCentral80

The praise centers on animal behavior, the building toolset and a more welcoming Career mode. The criticism is consistent too. GameWatcher describes Planet Zoo 2 as “often daunting” with many menus and half-explained mechanics, and it counts a “litany of bugs.” Steam Deck HQ gave the game a 3/5 for its Deck experience and reported animals escaping through fences with no visible gap, along with a stuck “Critical” habitat warning. It also found that placing buildings or aquariums does not clear existing trees and shrubs for you.

Players are less sure than critics

This is the part that reviews alone will not tell you. On Steam, the game sits at “Mostly Positive” with 1,107 positive and 455 negative reviews out of 1,562, which works out to roughly 71 percent. For a launch-day sequel to a beloved game, that is decent but not a victory lap, and it lines up with the bug reports from reviewers.

    Positive1,107 reviews (about 71%)
    Negative455 reviews (about 29%)

If that pattern sounds familiar, it is. Big launches routinely wobble on day one, as we saw when Minecraft Dungeons II reviewed well but hit login errors on PC. Frontier also has a track record of patching its sims heavily after launch, which GameWatcher acknowledges, though it notes that Planet Coaster 2 took a while to fully grow.

Where it fits in a busy season

No Man’s Sky Is Coming to iPhone and iPad on October 28, and the Full Game Costs $19.99

Planet Zoo 2 lands in the middle of a crowded autumn, and it appeals to a different audience than the shooters and action games around it. If you like quiet, creative games that you can lose a weekend to, it competes more with the cozy builders than with the blockbusters. Fans of slow-burn sandboxes may recall how long Valheim stayed in early access before its 1.0 release, and Planet Zoo 2 is the opposite approach: a full release first, with the polish expected to follow.

Platform choice matters here too. Xbox players should note that the game is on Series X/S at launch, and with Microsoft putting time limits on cloud gaming, a native install is the safer route for a game with 40 GB of data and long sessions.

Should you buy it now or wait?

If you loved the original and want aquariums and aviaries, the critics’ scores are a good sign and the core game appears solid. If you dislike fiddly menus, or you have been burned by buggy launches, waiting a few weeks for patches is a reasonable call. Newcomers should expect a learning curve, though Career mode is designed to ease you in.

My take: the ideas are right and the reviews back them up, but a 71 percent Steam score on launch day tells you the polish is not there yet. This looks like a game that will get better, and Frontier has earned some patience on that front. Pick it up now if you are a genre fan, and give it a month if you are on the fence.
