Amazon’s Echo lineup looks very different from a year ago. The fall 2025 refresh brought a new Echo Dot Max, a smaller Echo Studio and redesigned Echo Show 8 and Show 11 displays, all built around the new Alexa+ assistant. Then in August 2026 Amazon raised list prices across most of the range. Here is which Alexa speaker or smart display to buy in October 2026, and what each one really costs.
Current Echo lineup and prices
Amazon raised list prices on August 21, 2026, citing higher memory and storage costs. The Echo Studio was the main exception. Here are the current US list prices:
| Device | Type | Old price | Current list price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Dot | Compact speaker | $49.99 | $79.99 |
| Echo Dot Max | Speaker | $99.99 | $119.99 |
| Echo Studio | Premium speaker | $219.99 | $219.99 |
| Echo Spot | Smart alarm clock | $79.99 | $109.99 |
| Echo Show 5 | Small display | $89.99 | $99.99 |
| Echo Show 8 | Smart display | $179.99 | $199.99 |
| Echo Show 11 | Smart display | $219.99 | $249.99 |
| Echo Show 15 | Wall display | $299.99 | $349.99 |
| Echo Show 21 | Wall display | $399.99 | $499.99 |
Best Alexa speakers
Echo Dot Max: best for most people. This is the new default Alexa speaker in Amazon’s range. It uses two drivers, a high excursion woofer plus a custom tweeter, and Amazon says it delivers roughly three times the bass of the fifth generation Echo Dot. It runs on Amazon’s AZ3 chip, which the company says improves wake word detection by nearly 50 percent. At $119.99 it costs only $40 more than the regular Dot, which makes it the better value.
Echo Studio: best for music. The 2025 Echo Studio is about 40 percent smaller than the original sphere but keeps the premium audio hardware: a woofer, three full range drivers, spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, powered by the AZ3 Pro chip. It was the one Echo spared from the August price increase, so $219.99 now looks like fair value. Pair two for stereo, or link up to five Echo Studio or Echo Dot Max units with a compatible Fire TV stick for Alexa Home Theater.
Echo Dot: only on sale. The fifth generation Dot is still a capable kitchen or bedroom speaker, but at its new $79.99 list price it makes little sense next to the Dot Max. Amazon discounted it to about $55 around Labor Day, and that is closer to what it is worth.
Best Echo smart displays
Echo Show 8: best smart display. The redesigned Show 8 adds front facing stereo speakers with a custom woofer, a 13 megapixel camera for video calls and the AZ3 Pro chip. It is the right size for a kitchen counter or desk, with room for recipes, cameras from Ring and your calendar.
Echo Show 11: bigger screen. Same hardware story as the Show 8 with an 11 inch screen. Worth the extra $50 if you plan to watch video on it. An adjustable stand is sold separately.
Echo Spot: best for the bedside. A small screen alarm clock with a speaker and no camera, which many people prefer in a bedroom.
Echo Show 15 and Show 21: family hubs. Large wall or counter displays for shared calendars, lists and widgets. They are expensive at $349.99 and $499.99, so wait for a sale.
Alexa+: what it is and what it costs
Alexa+ is Amazon’s generative AI version of Alexa. It handles natural follow up questions, multi step requests and smart home routines described in plain English. Early access ended in February 2026, and it is now available to everyone in the US:
Free, unlimited, for the whole household on Echo devices, Alexa.com and the Alexa app.
$19.99 a month for full, unlimited Alexa+.
A limited text chat version on Alexa.com and the app, no subscription.
If you do not have Prime, compare the $19.99 plan with the cost of a Prime membership, which also adds shipping and video perks. For many households Prime is the better deal.
FAQ
Which Echo has the best sound?
The Echo Studio. It is the only current Echo with Dolby Atmos and spatial audio, and it pairs with a Fire TV stick for a simple home theater setup.
Why did Echo prices go up?
Amazon raised prices on Echo, Kindle, Fire TV and eero devices in August 2026 and pointed to higher memory and storage component costs.
Do I need Prime to use an Echo?
No. Every Echo works without Prime. You only need Prime, or the $19.99 monthly plan, for unlimited Alexa+.
Is the Echo Dot Max worth it over the Echo Dot?
At current list prices, yes. The $40 difference buys a real woofer and tweeter and noticeably fuller bass.
The verdict
The Echo Dot Max is the Alexa speaker to buy in October 2026, with the Echo Studio as the upgrade for music lovers and the Echo Show 8 as the best smart display. Prices rose this summer, so time your purchase around a sale, and use Prime to get Alexa+ at no extra cost.
