OpenAI Just Put a Sales Rep Inside Your ChatGPT Chat. It Has Its Own Conversation Window.

ChatGPT ads started small. When OpenAI turned them on for Free and Go tier users back in February, the format was close to what you would expect from any consumer app: a labeled promotional link, easy to ignore, easy to scroll past. Seven months later, the format has grown a personality. As of September 16, an ad inside ChatGPT can open its own chat window and start talking to you.

OpenAI calls the feature Sponsored Agents. The pitch is that it is more useful than a banner and more honest than a native product placement, because the business behind it gets its own clearly labeled space to make its case, separate from whatever ChatGPT itself is telling you. The blunter description is that ChatGPT now contains a second kind of assistant, one that exists to sell you something, and the two are designed to sit right next to each other in the same window.

    The short version

    • OpenAI introduced Sponsored Agents on September 16, 2026, letting advertisers run a labeled, separate chat conversation inside ChatGPT
    • Users have to opt in by clicking into the sponsored conversation. It does not automatically merge with ChatGPT’s own answers
    • An Ads Manager plugin lets advertisers build and adjust campaigns using plain-language instructions instead of a traditional dashboard
    • HubSpot is OpenAI’s first CRM partner and Shopify its first e-commerce partner, both live starting this week in the United States
    • Shopify’s integration expands to international markets on September 23
    • The feature is currently limited to a test group of advertisers in the United States
    • It follows a February 2026 launch of standard ChatGPT ads for Free and Go plan users

How a Sponsored Agent conversation actually works

The mechanics are more restrained than the concept sounds. According to OpenAI, a Sponsored Agent only appears when an ad is already judged relevant to what a user is discussing, and even then it does not take over the conversation on its own. The user has to actively choose to open it. Once inside, they can describe what they are looking for, ask follow-up questions, and click through to the advertiser’s website when they are ready, all inside a session OpenAI says will carry a clear sponsorship label throughout and will not blend with ChatGPT’s own responses or the conversation that was already happening.

That separation is the entire selling point to a skeptical user, and it is also the hardest thing to verify from the outside. A label is easy to add. Whether an assistant that has been trained to hold a persuasive, on-brand conversation actually feels different from the assistant sitting one tap away is a UX question that will only get answered once people are using it at scale.

The Ads Manager, and why HubSpot and Shopify matter

The other half of the announcement is aimed at the businesses buying the ads rather than the people seeing them. OpenAI’s new Ads Manager plugin lets an advertiser type plain-language instructions, something like “increase spend on the running shoes campaign and pause the one for winter boots”, instead of navigating a conventional ad console. It is the same conversational interface pattern OpenAI has been pushing into everything else it ships, applied this time to a job normally done by a marketing analyst with a dashboard open in six tabs.

HubSpot is OpenAI’s first customer relationship management partner, letting businesses connect a ChatGPT Ads account and create ads, watch performance and follow up on leads without leaving HubSpot. Shopify is the first e-commerce partner, with a dedicated ChatGPT Ads app live for U.S. merchants now and set to reach other markets where ChatGPT Ads operates starting September 23. Together they are the plumbing that turns “an interesting ad experiment” into something a small business’s marketing team can actually plug into their existing workflow without hiring anyone new.

None of this infrastructure is being built from scratch. It rides on the same agent framework OpenAI has spent the year turning into a product category of its own, the one that recently put the entire Codex coding harness behind a single API call for developers. Sponsored Agents are, structurally, a commercial cousin of that same idea: an agent given a narrow job, a personality, and enough autonomy to carry a conversation to a specific outcome. OpenAI built the scaffolding for agents that write code first. Agents that sell things were always going to be next, and the company that builds a coordinator capable of directing thousands of subagents without writing a line of code itself clearly sees no meaningful difference between an agent that manages a software project and one that manages a sales funnel.

The opt-in path, step by step Each step requires the user to actively continue Normal chat with ChatGPT Labeled ad appears, relevant User opts in taps to open it Agent chat, then click OpenAI’s design bets that friction at every step keeps the sponsored conversation feeling optional rather than intrusive.

The part OpenAI would rather not lead with

Not everyone is convinced the label solves the underlying problem. Critics have pointed out that even a clearly marked sponsored conversation still relies on ChatGPT’s read of the conversation that came before it to decide an ad is relevant in the first place, which means the targeting still runs on the same private context people came to ChatGPT to discuss.

Anthropic has already made a public joke of the whole category, mocking the idea of AI-native advertising in a Super Bowl spot earlier this year. A former OpenAI employee went further, publishing an opinion piece titled “OpenAI Is Making the Mistakes Facebook Made. I Quit,” arguing that advertising incentives erode a product’s commitment to users over time, regardless of how carefully the first version is labeled.

Why OpenAI is doing this now

The honest answer is money. Running frontier models at ChatGPT’s scale is expensive by any normal business standard, and free and low-cost tiers do not pay for themselves through subscriptions alone. Advertising is the same lever every consumer tech company reaches for once a free tier gets large enough to matter, and OpenAI reaching for it now tracks with a year of aggressive product shipping aimed at monetizing every layer of ChatGPT, from the paid tiers that got OpenAI’s best model first while cheaper subscribers waited, to agents that now write code, to agents that now sell shoes.

AI Made the Four-Day Week Possible. A Law From 1938 Is What Stands in the Way.

The test is small and contained on purpose. Limiting Sponsored Agents to select U.S. advertisers lets OpenAI find out how people actually react to a chat window that exists to sell them something before deciding whether to widen it. Given how much of ChatGPT’s product roadmap this year has been about giving its models more autonomy to act rather than just answer, it would be a surprise if this stayed small for long.

    What to watch next

    • Whether Sponsored Agents expand past the U.S. test group. Shopify’s own international rollout on September 23 is the first real signal of pace
    • Whether the label survives contact with actual usage. A clean opt-in flow in a product announcement and a clean opt-in flow at scale are two different things
    • Whether other CRM and commerce platforms follow HubSpot and Shopify. First-partner status rarely stays exclusive for long in this market
    • Whether targeting data stays as separate from ChatGPT’s core conversation memory as OpenAI says it will. That boundary is doing most of the trust-related work here

Every consumer product that has ever added advertising has promised, at the start, that the ads would stay clearly separated from the thing people actually came for. Some of them meant it for a while. ChatGPT is now the newest and most conversationally capable entrant into that long tradition, and the interesting question was never whether OpenAI could label an ad clearly on day one. It is whether a chat window built to be as persuasive and personable as possible can hold that line once there is real revenue riding on it not holding.
