Sony Will Pay $400 for Your Old PS5. A New One Now Costs $649.99.

Some PlayStation owners got an unusual message this week. It wasn’t about a sale, a new game or a PS Plus deal. It was Sony suggesting they sell their PS5. The pitch: send your console to Back Market and get up to $400 paid straight into your bank account.

The notification was first shared by a player on ResetEra and picked up by Push Square, Kotaku and UNILAD Tech. The timing is hard to miss. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, the PS5 Pro is sold out at most major US retailers, and memory chip prices have pushed every console up by $100 or more this year. So is $400 a good deal, or is Sony just trying to pull idle hardware back into circulation? We compared it with every other way to sell a PS5 right now.

    The short version

    • Back Market, Sony’s refurbishing partner since 2024, is offering up to $400 cash for a standard PS5 and up to $380 for the Digital Edition.
    • The top price needs a flawless console plus two controllers. The PS5 Pro isn’t eligible.
    • Payment goes to your bank account, usually within about five business days of inspection.
    • That’s roughly double GameStop’s cash offer of $192.50 for the same console.
    • A new PS5 now costs $649.99, so selling only makes sense if your console really is collecting dust.

    What Sony is actually offering

Sony doesn’t buy the consoles itself. The message points owners to Back Market, the refurbished electronics marketplace that has run PlayStation’s “Trade In & Trade Up” program in the US since 2024. That earlier scheme gave PS4 owners vouchers toward a PS5. This one is simpler: you get a quote online, ship the console with a free prepaid label, a refurbisher inspects it, and the money lands in your account.

The headline $400 comes with conditions. According to TechPowerUp, the figure is based on quotes for a standard disc PS5 in “Grade 0” condition, which means no visible wear, sent with at least two controllers. A Digital Edition tops out at $380. The final payout depends on what the inspector finds, so a scuffed shell or a drifting stick will bring the number down. The offer is US only for now.

There’s one notable exclusion. The PS5 Pro, the console everyone is chasing ahead of GTA 6, isn’t part of the program.

How $400 compares with other ways to sell

Trade-in offers swing a lot depending on who’s buying and whether they pay in cash or store credit. Here’s where the major options stood this week for a standard PS5 in good shape.

Back Market’s cash offer beats GameStop’s by a wide margin. Even GameStop’s store credit, which you can only spend at GameStop, falls $125 short. Selling privately on eBay or Facebook Marketplace can still get you more, since used consoles have been holding their value unusually well this year, but you’ll deal with listings, buyers and the risk of scams. The Back Market route is closer to a guaranteed price with no haggling.

Xbox owners got a similar pitch in October. Microsoft emailed inactive Series X|S owners suggesting they trade in at Best Buy for “up to $375 back.” That offer pays in a Best Buy gift card, not cash, and a Series S tops out around $200. With Best Buy reselling refurbished Series X consoles for around $650, many players called it a lowball. Sony’s offer, paid in actual money, looks better by comparison.

    Why a five-year-old PS5 is worth $400

Normally, a console bought in 2020 would be worth a fraction of its price by now. This year broke that rule. The AI boom has soaked up the world’s memory chip supply, and the RAM and storage inside every console got far more expensive. Research firm TrendForce estimated that contract prices for conventional DRAM rose 90 to 95% in the first quarter of 2026 alone, then another 58 to 63% in the second.

Console makers passed that on. Sony raised PS5 prices on April 2, 2026, the second increase in under a year. Here’s how the price of each model has moved in the US.

    PS5 Digital$399.99$499.99$599.99$380
    PS5 Pro$699.99$749.99$899.99Not eligible

A disc PS5 that cost $499.99 at launch now returns up to 80% of that price after six years of use. That’s remarkable for any piece of consumer electronics. The catch is on the other side of the trade: replacing it would cost $649.99, so you’d get back about 62% of today’s retail price.

Why Sony wants your console back

Sony hasn’t said. But the context points in one direction. PS5 shipments fell to 16 million in Sony’s last fiscal year, down from 18.5 million, and Sony’s CEO Hiroki Totoki warned in May that memory costs could have a “big impact” on console prices. The PS5 Pro has been sold out at major US stores for weeks, and retailers warned back in June about shortages around GTA 6’s launch.

Meanwhile, plenty of PS5s are sitting unused in closets and guest rooms. A refurbished console resold by Back Market is a console Sony doesn’t have to build with expensive new memory, and it’s one more machine in the hands of someone who’ll buy GTA 6. It also nudges current owners toward the Pro. We’ve already seen how strange the market has become: GameStop listed a used PS5 Pro for $1,399.99, and a leaked memo called that pricing intentional.

Our take: If your PS5 hasn’t been switched on since spring and you don’t plan to play GTA 6, $400 in cash is one of the best offers a used console has ever gotten. If you’re trading in to upgrade, do the math first. You’d still need about $500 on top to buy a PS5 Pro at $899.99, assuming you can find one in stock.

Before you ship it: a quick checklist

If you decide to sell, a few minutes of prep protects your account and your payout.

Backing up saves needs PS Plus for cloud storage, or a USB drive if you don’t subscribe. Turning off console sharing matters most: if you skip it, the next owner could end up with access to your digital library. The photos give you something to point to if the inspector downgrades your console.

If you’re keeping your console for GTA 6 instead, make sure it’s ready. Our guide to the PS5 settings worth changing before launch night takes about ten minutes.

    The bigger picture

A console maker paying people to give back its hardware would have sounded absurd a few years ago. In 2026 it’s a sign of how much the memory shortage has upended gaming. Industry analysts don’t expect relief before late 2027, and next-generation hardware is under the same pressure. Reports already suggest the memory alone in a PS6 could cost over $680. For now, an old PS5 is one of the few gadgets that’s held its value. If you weren’t using yours anyway, this might be the best time to cash in.
