WhatsApp Pins Can Now Last Forever. Three More Group Chat Fixes Arrive With Them.

Everybody has that one group chat. The family thread that hits 300 messages while you’re in a meeting, or the friends’ group where the restaurant address scrolled away two days ago. WhatsApp just rolled out four changes aimed squarely at that problem, and unlike a lot of app updates, these are the kind you’ll notice the first time you open a busy group.

“A busy group chat means plans are being made, news is being shared and the jokes are in full swing,” WhatsApp wrote in its announcement, as UNILAD Tech reported. “But it can also mean a lot of messages to catch up on when you’ve been busy.” The fixes are permanent pins, catch-up history for people who join late, a Status feed that lives inside a single group, and a filter that shows only the chats where someone actually wants your attention.

    The short version

    • Pins can now stay forever. No more choosing between 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
    • Late joiners can catch up. Tap a new member’s name to send them recent messages, end-to-end encrypted.
    • Group Status gives each group its own 24-hour Status feed that only members can see.
    • A “Mentions and replies” filter surfaces unread groups where you were @mentioned or replied to, including @all.
    • Rolling out globally on iPhone and Android over the coming weeks.

    The four new features, explained

WhatsApp’s four new group chat tools Announced October 30, 2026, rolling out on iOS and Android 1 Pins that never expire Keep an address, date or rule pinned at the top with no time limit. 2 History for latecomers Tap a new member’s name to send them recent messages, still end-to-end encrypted. 3 Group Status Photos and updates for one group only. Members can react and post. Gone in 24 hours. 4 Mentions and replies A chat filter that shows only unread groups where you were @mentioned or replied to.

    1. Pins that stay pinned

WhatsApp has let you pin messages in chats since 2023, but every pin came with an expiry timer of 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. That’s fine for “dinner at 8 tonight.” It’s useless for a school group’s emergency contact list or a building chat’s Wi-Fi password. Now you can choose to keep a message pinned indefinitely. Digit notes the timed options are still there if you want them, so you’re not forced into permanent pins.

    2. Catch-up history for people who join late

Earlier this year, WhatsApp added Group Message History, which pops up a prompt when you add someone and lets you share between 25 and 100 recent messages with them. The catch was timing: you had to do it at the moment you added them. The new version works after the fact. “Now you can also send someone recent messages retroactively after they’ve joined a group just by tapping their name in the chat,” WhatsApp said. The shared messages stay end-to-end encrypted, the rest of the group gets a notice when history is shared, and admins can still switch the option off in group settings.

    3. Group Status

Regular WhatsApp Status works like Instagram Stories: post a photo or update and everyone in your contacts who has your number can see it for 24 hours. Group Status narrows that to one group. Members can view it, react to it and add their own posts, and WhatsApp says the updates are visible only to members of that group. Think vacation photos for the family chat that you don’t want showing up for your landlord or your boss.

    4. A filter for messages that actually need you

WhatsApp already has chat filters for Unread, Favorites and Groups. The new one, Mentions and replies, shows unread group conversations where someone @mentioned you or replied directly to one of your messages. It also catches @all mentions, so if an admin pings the whole group, it’ll surface. If you’re in 20 groups and only care when someone needs an answer from you, this is the feature to use.

How the new features compare to what you had before

    FeatureBeforeNow
Pinned messages24 hours, 7 days or 30 daysCan stay pinned indefinitely
History for new membersOnly when adding someone, 25 to 100 messagesCan also be sent later by tapping their name
Status audienceYour contacts, or a custom listAlso a single group, members only
Finding @mentionsOpen each group and look for the @ badgeDedicated Mentions and replies filter

How to use them once they reach your phone

    Step by step

    1. Update WhatsApp from the App Store or Google Play. The rollout is gradual, so not everyone will see everything on day one.
    2. Pin a message forever: long-press the message, tap Pin, and choose the no time limit option when WhatsApp asks how long to keep it.
    3. Share history with a newcomer: open the group, tap the new member’s name in the chat, and choose to send recent messages.
    4. Post to Group Status: look for the Status option inside the group. Posts disappear after 24 hours, like regular Status.
    5. Turn on the new filter: on the Chats tab, tap the filter row at the top and pick Mentions and replies.

WhatsApp hasn’t published exact app version numbers for the rollout, and menu names can shift slightly between iPhone and Android. If you don’t see an option yet, it’s most likely still on its way to your account rather than missing.

Why WhatsApp keeps fixing group chats

Groups are where WhatsApp lives now. It has more than 3 billion monthly users, according to Meta, and a single group can hold up to 1,024 members. That’s a lot of messages to wade through, and WhatsApp has spent the past year adding tools to tame them: member tags, private replies to group messages, multi-answer polls and, more recently, scheduled messages that send even when your phone is off. Today’s update fits that pattern. None of it is flashy. All of it saves time.

There’s a privacy angle worth a moment, too. Shared history means new members can see messages that were sent before they arrived. WhatsApp keeps it encrypted and tells the group when history is shared, but if your group chat has a habit of saying things about people who might join later, admins may want to check the history setting. While you’re in settings, it’s also a good time to make sure your account is locked down with WhatsApp’s newer two-step verification password and passkeys.

Our take: Permanent pins and the Mentions and replies filter are the two you’ll use every day. Group Status is a smart way to share photos with the people who actually care about them. And if you’re the person who always gets added to the group chat late, you finally have a polite way to ask “what did I miss?” without asking at all.
