Xbox Revenue Fell Again, but the Drop Is Shrinking, and Microsoft Now Guides Growth

Microsoft reported its first fiscal quarter on October 28, and the Xbox line tells a familiar story with one new twist. Revenue is still shrinking, but the declines are much smaller than they were a few months ago, and the company is now pointing to growth in content and services next quarter.

That matters because Xbox boss Asha Sharma has set an ambitious goal: pass Sony and Nintendo on profit margins by fiscal 2030. Here is what the new numbers say about how far there is to go.

    The short version

    • Xbox content and services: down 2% (1% in constant currency)
    • Xbox hardware: down 14% on lower console volume
    • Devices and Consumer segment: $15.5 billion, down 3%
    • Cause named in the filing: weaker third-party content and Game Pass, partly offset by first-party growth
    • Outlook: CFO Amy Hood reportedly expects content and services to grow roughly 5% to 10% next quarter, with hardware down again

    What the quarter actually showed

The quarter covers July through September 2026. Microsoft’s 10-Q attributes the content and services dip to weaker third-party content and Game Pass, while first-party content grew. In plain terms, people spent less on games made by other publishers and on the subscription, but Xbox’s own titles helped soften the blow.

Hardware is the weaker half. A 14% fall on lower console volume is not pretty, yet it is far better than the 29% drop Microsoft recorded for the full fiscal 2026 year. Consoles are getting more expensive, with a price increase of up to $150 reported to have started August 1, so shrinking volume is not a shock.

Xbox year-over-year revenue change, recent periods

    Content and services: Q4 FY26 (-10%) and Q1 FY27 (-2%). Hardware: FY26 full year (-29%) and Q1 FY27 (-14%). Bars show size of decline.

    Hardware, FY26 full year-29%
    Hardware, Q1 FY27-14%
    Content and services, Q4 FY26-10%
    Content and services, Q1 FY27-2%

The margin gap is the real story

Revenue is only half the picture. In a July memo to staff, reported by CNBC, Sharma laid out the plan to reach industry-leading margins by fiscal 2030. The same reporting put Xbox’s current internal margin at about 3%, compared with 9.9% for PlayStation and 16% for Nintendo.

Closing that gap means cutting costs, raising prices and growing the high-margin parts of the business. The cuts have already happened: Microsoft reportedly trimmed 4,800 jobs in July, including about 3,200 in Xbox. If you want the wider backdrop, our look at Microsoft’s buyout offer to 60,000 employees shows how hard the company is leaning on efficiency while it pours money into AI.

Why third-party content is the weak spot

Microsoft’s wording puts third-party content and Game Pass at the center of the decline. That lines up with a trend we have been tracking. Big multiplatform releases keep skipping the subscription, as with Modern Warfare 4 launching without Game Pass, and Xbox has been experimenting with new ways to charge, such as hourly pricing for cloud streaming.

    Xbox hardware-14%
Devices and Consumer revenue$15.5 billion, -3%
    Windows OEM and Devices-22%

    What to watch next

    • Next quarter’s guidance: a 5% to 10% rise in content and services would be the first real turn after a long slide, and it will cover the holiday season.
    • Game Pass subscribers: Microsoft did not break out numbers here, so any new figure would be telling.
    • Console pricing: hardware is guided down again, which suggests higher prices are still pushing buyers away.
    • The mid-2027 promise: Sharma has publicly predicted a return to growth by then, so each quarter is now a checkpoint.

    GTA 6 Is a 210GB Download on PS5, and Pre-Load Reportedly Starts November 12

    My take

A 2% decline is not a victory, but compared with a 10% drop one quarter earlier it is a clear improvement, and the hardware slide is easing too. The harder problem is that a 3% margin leaves almost no room for error, and Nintendo’s 16% is a long way up.

For players, the practical effect is more price pressure and more pressure on Game Pass to prove its value. Whether Xbox gets there through smarter pricing or deeper cuts is the question the next two earnings reports will start to answer.
