ChatGPT lets you pick a personality that changes how it talks to you, from formal and precise to dry and sarcastic. The presets launched in August 2025 under names like Cynic, Robot, Listener and Nerd, but the lineup has changed twice since then. Here is the current list as of October 2026, what each personality actually does, and how to switch between them on the web and in the mobile app.

Quick answer: Click your profile icon, open Personalization and use the Base style and tone menu. The current options are Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient and Cynical. For finer control, adjust the Characteristics on the same page to make replies warmer, calmer, more structured or lighter on emoji.

From Cynic and Robot to today’s lineup

OpenAI introduced personalities during its summer 2025 update as a research preview with four presets: Cynic, Robot, Listener and Nerd. They sat inside the Customize ChatGPT settings and were opt in for every user. The same update also brought chat colors, wider access to voice conversations and easier connections to Gmail and Google Calendar.

In November 2025, alongside the GPT 5.1 models, OpenAI reworked the menu. Listener was renamed Friendly, Robot became Efficient, the cynic preset continued as Cynical, and three new styles arrived: Professional, Candid and Quirky. The nerd preset lived on as Nerdy for a few months.

Then, in mid March 2026, OpenAI removed Nerdy. The company later published an explanation: training that rewarded playful, nerdy answers had taught its models an odd habit of dropping references to goblins and gremlins, and the tic leaked into other personalities too. Retiring the preset was part of the cleanup.

Visible Family Plan: How Visible Inner Circle Works in 2026

    PersonalityHow it soundsGood for
DefaultStandard, balanced styleEveryday use if you have no strong preference
ProfessionalFormal, precise, clearly organizedWork documents, reports, client emails
FriendlyWarm and chatty with light humor, asks clarifying questionsBrainstorming, planning, casual help
CandidDirect and encouraging, honest feedback, little small talkReviewing your writing, plans or code
QuirkyPlayful, imaginative framing, more jokesCreative prompts and fun chats
EfficientConcise and plain, answer first and short reasoning afterQuick facts, how to questions, busy days
CynicalSarcastic and dry, but still practicalPeople who find the default tone too sunny

If you used the original presets, the mapping is simple: pick Friendly in place of Listener, Efficient in place of Robot and Cynical in place of Cynic. There is no direct replacement for Nerd, but Quirky combined with a custom instruction about your favorite topics gets close.

    How to change ChatGPT’s personality

On the web or desktop app:

    1. Click your profile icon.
    2. Choose Personalization.
    3. Open the dropdown next to Base style and tone and pick a personality.

    On iPhone or Android:

    1. Tap your profile icon to open Settings.
    2. Go to Personalization, then Base style and tone.
    3. Select the personality you want.

The change applies to all of your chats, including conversations you already started, so you do not need to open a new chat to see the difference. You can switch back at any time.

    Characteristics: fine tune the tone

A preset sets the overall voice, and Characteristics let you nudge specific traits in a more or less direction. You find them on the same Personalization page.

    Warm
More sincere and kind, or more emotionally neutral.
    Enthusiastic
More excitement, or a calmer and more objective tone.
    Headers & Lists
More headings, lists and tables, or more plain paragraphs.
    Emojis
A few more emoji, or almost none in informational answers.

A practical combination for work is Efficient with less enthusiasm and fewer emojis. For a study buddy, Friendly with more headers and lists keeps explanations warm but easy to scan.

How personalities interact with your other settings

Personality only changes communication style. It does not unlock new abilities, change which model you use or loosen safety rules. Content you explicitly ask for, such as code or a formal email, still follows your request rather than the preset.

Your custom instructions and saved memories work alongside the personality. If they conflict, for example a custom instruction asking for long and detailed answers while you selected Efficient, the instruction can override or soften the preset. Instructions you give in the middle of a conversation can also change the tone for that chat.

Tip: if a new personality seems to have no effect, open your custom instructions and remove old lines about tone, length or style. Old instructions written for a different preset are the most common reason the change looks invisible.

    FAQ

What happened to the Cynic, Robot, Listener and Nerd personalities?

They were reworked in November 2025. Listener became Friendly, Robot became Efficient and Cynic became Cynical. Nerd carried on as Nerdy until OpenAI removed it in March 2026.

Do personalities make ChatGPT smarter or less safe?

No. They only change tone and formatting. Capabilities and safety rules stay the same whichever preset you choose.

Can I create my own personality?

There is no custom preset slot, but you can get close by combining a base style, the Characteristics controls and a few lines of custom instructions describing how you want ChatGPT to talk.

Does changing personality reset my chats?

No. Your history stays intact, and the new style applies to existing and new conversations.

    The verdict

The personality menu is one of the easiest ways to make ChatGPT feel less generic. Start with Efficient or Candid if you want fewer filler words, try Friendly or Quirky for creative sessions, and use Characteristics to fix the details instead of rewriting your custom instructions every week.

Updated October 2026: rewritten with the current personality lineup, the history of the original presets, the Characteristics controls and setup steps for web and mobile.
