Learning to use Snapchat filters and lenses is what turns a plain photo into the playful, augmented-reality Snaps the app is famous for. Although people often use the two words interchangeably, they are actually different tools: Lenses transform what the camera sees in real time, while Filters overlay information and color on top of a photo you have already taken.

This guide explains the difference clearly, then walks you through applying both, stacking multiple Filters, unlocking special effects, and even creating your own. By the end you will know exactly how to reach for the right tool whether you want to add dog ears to a selfie or stamp your Snap with the local temperature.

Quick answer: To use a Lens, open the camera and tap your face or the smiley icon beside the capture button, then pick an effect from the carousel. To use a Filter, take a Snap first, then swipe left or right across the screen to cycle through color, location, time, and weather overlays.

Lenses vs. Filters: What’s the Difference?

The core distinction comes down to timing and interactivity. Lenses are live, augmented-reality effects that react to your face or surroundings before you capture. Filters are static overlays you add after capturing. Understanding this makes the whole system intuitive.

    Lenses

Real-time AR effects that change your face or environment as you look at the screen. Think face swaps, animal ears, background transformations, and interactive games. You choose them before taking the Snap.

    Filters

Overlays applied after you capture a Snap. They include color tints, the local time, your speed, the temperature, battery level, and location-specific Geofilters. Swipe across your Snap to cycle through them.

Lenses are created by Snapchat and its community, and thousands are available. Here is how to find and use one.

    1. Open the camera on the home screen and point it at your face or a scene.
    2. Tap the smiley Lens icon to the right of the capture button, or simply tap your face on the screen.
    3. Browse the carousel that appears above the capture button and tap any Lens thumbnail to preview it live.
    4. Follow on-screen prompts, such as “raise your eyebrows” or “open your mouth,” since many Lenses are interactive.
    5. Explore more Lenses by tapping the search icon in the carousel to find effects by keyword or creator.
    6. Capture your Snap by tapping the button once for a photo or holding it for a video with the Lens active.
    7. Send or save it using the blue arrow, or download it to Memories with the save icon.

    How to Apply a Filter

Filters work in the opposite order: capture first, then decorate. After you take a Snap, swipe your finger left or right across the image. Snapchat cycles through available Filters, including simple color looks, a timestamp, the current temperature, your altitude or speed, and any Geofilters tied to your location. Stop swiping when you find one you like.

    Stacking Multiple Filters

You can layer more than one Filter on a single Snap. Apply the first Filter by swiping, then press and hold the screen with one finger while swiping with another to add a second Filter on top. This lets you combine, for example, a color tint with the temperature readout.

    Geofilters and Location Effects

Geofilters are location-based Filters that appear only when you are in a specific place, such as a city, landmark, airport, or event. If none appear, make sure location services are enabled for Snapchat in your phone settings. Businesses and individuals can also design and submit their own Geofilters for special events like weddings.

    EffectTypeWhen you apply it
    Face LensLensBefore capture
    World LensLensBefore capture
    Color / TintFilterAfter capture
    GeofilterFilterAfter capture, location-based
    Temperature / TimeFilterAfter capture
Tip: Long-press a Lens thumbnail in the carousel to share it, or tap the send icon on a Lens to text the link to a friend so you can both use the same effect in a shared Snap.

Creating Your Own Lenses and Filters

Snapchat lets anyone design custom effects. For simple Filters, use the built-in “Create Filter” tool in the app or on Snapchat’s website to add your own artwork over a Snap. For advanced augmented-reality Lenses, download the free desktop program Lens Studio, where creators build 3D effects that can be published to the public Lens carousel. It has a learning curve, but the templates make basic projects approachable. To keep learning, browse our other how-to guides.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why don’t I see any Lenses?

If the Lens carousel is empty, make sure your app is updated and that you have granted camera access. A weak internet connection can also prevent new Lenses from loading, so try switching to Wi-Fi.

    Are Snapchat Lenses free?

Yes, the vast majority of Lenses are free to use. Snapchat+ subscribers get access to some exclusive Lenses, but the everyday effects everyone loves cost nothing.

Can I use Lenses on photos already in my camera roll?

Lenses are live effects that need the camera, so they cannot be applied to existing photos. However, you can import a photo into a Snap and then add Filters, stickers, and text to it.

How do I search for a specific Lens?

Tap the Lens icon to open the carousel, then tap the magnifying glass or “Explore” button. You can search by keyword, holiday, mood, or creator name to find the exact effect you want.

What is the difference between a Geofilter and a regular Filter?

A regular Filter is available everywhere, like a color tint or the time. A Geofilter only appears when you are physically in a specific location tied to that Filter, such as a particular city or event venue.
