Gaming Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant for gamers, and on a Windows PC it lives inside the Xbox Game Bar overlay. You can ask it how to beat a boss, where to find a collectible or which achievement to chase next without alt tabbing out of your game. The catch is that it is not always obvious where to find it, and it only shows up if a few conditions are met. Here is exactly how to open Gaming Copilot in Game Bar, what to do when the icon is missing, and which privacy settings to check first.
Quick answer
Press Windows key + G to open Xbox Game Bar, then click the Gaming Copilot icon in the Home Bar at the top. If it is not there, open the Widget menu and select Copilot. Sign in with your Xbox account for the full experience. You need the Xbox PC app installed and you must be 18 or older; it works everywhere except mainland China.
We followed Microsoft’s own launch instructions and Xbox support notes, current as of October 2026. Gaming Copilot is still labeled beta, so menu names can shift slightly between Game Bar updates.
Gaming Copilot in Game Bar
Sources: Xbox Wire, Microsoft. Availability: all regions except mainland China.
What you need before you start
- A Windows 11 PC with Xbox Game Bar installed and up to date. Game Bar comes with Windows, and updates arrive through the Microsoft Store.
- The Xbox PC app installed. Microsoft lists it as a requirement for Gaming Copilot on PC.
- An Xbox account (a Microsoft account). You can open Copilot without signing in, but personal answers about your achievements and play history need it.
- Age 18 or older on that account.
- A supported region, which is everywhere except mainland China, and an internet connection, because answers come from Microsoft’s cloud.
How to open Gaming Copilot in Xbox Game Bar
- Start your game, or stay on the desktop if you just want to try it.
- Press Windows key + G. The Game Bar overlay appears on top of whatever is running. On an Xbox controller you can also press the Xbox button, if that shortcut is enabled.
- Look at the Home Bar, the strip of icons along the top of the overlay, and click the Gaming Copilot icon.
- If you do not see it, click the Widget menu icon in the Home Bar and choose Copilot from the list. Click the star next to it to add it to the Home Bar for next time.
- Sign in with your Xbox account when prompted, then type a question or click Talk to use your voice.
Tip
Copilot can see what is on your screen while you are actively using it, so questions like “how do I get past this part?” work without describing the level. You do not have to name the game in every question either; it knows what you are playing.
Gaming Copilot not showing up in Game Bar? Try this
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Win + G does nothing | Go to Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and make sure the shortcut to open Game Bar is enabled |
| No Copilot icon or widget | Update Xbox Game Bar and the Xbox PC app from the Microsoft Store library, then restart the PC |
| Widget opens but says it is unavailable | Check that you are signed in with an account set to age 18 or older, and that you are not in an unsupported region |
| Answers ignore your achievements | Sign in with the Xbox account you actually play on inside the Copilot widget |
| Voice does not work | Allow microphone access for Game Bar in Windows privacy settings and set a Push to Talk key |
Gaming Copilot is a rolling beta, so a missing widget is most often an outdated Game Bar.
What Gaming Copilot can actually do
Think of it as a game guide that knows what you are playing and what you have already done. Based on Microsoft’s description, the useful jobs are:
- Tips and walkthrough help for the exact spot you are stuck on, using what is currently on screen.
- Achievement hunting. It knows which achievements you have unlocked and can point you toward the next one.
- Recommendations for what to play next, based on your play history and favorite genres.
- Quick game and Xbox questions, such as controls, builds or how a game mode works, without leaving the game.
It is not a replacement for a dedicated wiki on deep questions, and like any AI assistant it can be confidently wrong about specific numbers or item locations. Use the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons on answers; Microsoft uses that feedback to tune the beta.
How to use voice mode and Push to Talk
Typing mid fight is clumsy, which is why voice mode is the best way to use Gaming Copilot. Click Talk in the widget to start a spoken conversation. To keep your hands on the controls, set a Push to Talk key in the Copilot widget’s Hardware and Hotkeys settings, then hold that key whenever you want to ask something.
How to pin Gaming Copilot while you play (Mini Mode)
- Open Gaming Copilot from Game Bar as described above.
- Click the pin icon on the widget so it stays visible after the overlay closes.
- Start a conversation with Talk, then click the upward arrow to shrink the widget into Mini Mode.
- Drag the small window to a corner of the screen where it does not cover your HUD.
Gaming Copilot privacy settings to check
In October 2025 users noticed that Gaming Copilot captures screenshots of gameplay, which caused a stir. Microsoft’s answer, as reported by Tom’s Hardware: screenshots are taken only while you are actively using Gaming Copilot, to understand what is happening in your game, and they are not used to train AI models. Your text and voice conversations, however, may be used to help train and improve Microsoft’s AI unless you opt out.
- Press Windows key + G to open Game Bar.
- Click the Settings gear in the Home Bar.
- Open Privacy settings.
- Turn off Model training on text, and any voice training option listed there, if you do not want your conversations used for AI training.
Heads up
Turning off training does not switch Gaming Copilot off. It simply stops your conversations from being used to improve the model. If you never open the widget, Copilot does not take screenshots at all.
How to turn off or hide Gaming Copilot
Gaming Copilot is optional and does nothing until you open it. If you want it out of sight, unpin it and remove its star in the Widget menu so it no longer sits in the Home Bar. To stop Game Bar from opening at all, turn off the shortcut in Settings > Gaming > Game Bar. Removing Copilot completely is not offered as a simple option, because it is built into Game Bar; uninstalling Game Bar itself takes an admin PowerShell command and also removes features like screen recording, so we do not recommend it.
Where else Gaming Copilot works
| Device | How to open it | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Windows key + G, Gaming Copilot widget in Game Bar | Beta since September 2025 |
| Xbox app on iPhone and Android | Copilot section of the Xbox mobile app, kept open while you play on another screen | Beta, rolled out from October 2025 |
| Windows gaming handhelds | Game Bar on devices such as the ROG Xbox Ally | Optimized as part of the handheld rollout |
| Xbox Series X|S | On the console itself | Announced at GDC 2026 for later in 2026 |
Microsoft has been folding Copilot into more of its products and trimming others along the way; we covered one round of that in the Copilot features Microsoft retired in August. For the bigger picture of where Xbox on PC is heading, see what Xbox’s reset changes for gamers.
Our take
Gaming Copilot is worth a try if you regularly pause games to search for help, and voice mode with a Push to Talk key is the way to use it. Spend thirty seconds in Game Bar’s privacy settings first, and keep a proper guide handy for anything where a wrong answer would cost you hours.
