How to Cancel a Subscription on iPhone (2026): Step-by-Step

Free trials that quietly turn into charges, an app you used once, a streaming service you forgot about — subscriptions add up fast. The good news is that your iPhone keeps every App Store subscription in one place, and canceling takes under a minute once you know where to look. This guide shows you how to cancel a subscription on iPhone in iOS 26, how to hunt down subscriptions you’ve forgotten, what actually happens when you cancel, and how to request a refund.

Quick answer: Open Settings, tap your name at the very top, then tap Subscriptions. Select the subscription you want to end and tap Cancel Subscription. You’ll keep access until the end of the period you already paid for. If you don’t see a Cancel button, the subscription is already canceled or was purchased outside Apple.

How to Cancel an iPhone Subscription (Settings Method)

This is the fastest and most reliable route:

    1. Open the Settings app.
    2. Tap your name and photo at the top of the screen (this is your Apple Account).
    3. Tap Subscriptions.
    4. Under Active, tap the subscription you want to cancel.
    5. Tap Cancel Subscription (scroll down if you don’t see it right away).
    6. Confirm. The subscription moves to Expired when the current period ends.

Alternative: Cancel From the App Store

If you can’t get into the Apple Account screen, you can reach the same list through the App Store:

    1. Open the App Store.
    2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
    3. Tap your name, then Subscriptions.
    4. Choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription.

Both routes open the exact same subscription manager — use whichever you reach faster.

How to Find Hidden or Forgotten Subscriptions

The Subscriptions screen only shows things billed through Apple, but that covers a huge share of app subscriptions. Two tricks help you catch the ones you’ve forgotten:

    • Scroll to the bottom of the Subscriptions screen. Expired subscriptions are listed there too, so you can see everything you’ve ever signed up for through Apple.
    • Check your email for Apple receipts. Search your inbox for “Your subscription” or “receipt from Apple” to spot renewals you didn’t notice.

Important: Not every subscription is billed by Apple. Services you signed up for directly on a company’s own website — for example Netflix, Spotify, or a gym app bought outside the App Store — won’t appear here. You have to cancel those on the provider’s own site or app. See the section below.

    What Happens When You Cancel

    QuestionWhat actually happens
Do I lose access immediately? No. You keep full access until the end of the period you already paid for.
Do I get a partial refund?Usually no. Apple does not automatically refund the unused part of a billing period.
Will I be charged again? No. Canceling stops the next automatic renewal.
Can I re-subscribe later?Yes, anytime — the app will offer to resubscribe.
What about a free trial?Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being charged.
Canceling stops future charges but usually doesn’t refund the current period.

How to Get a Refund for an App or Subscription

If you were charged for something by mistake — a trial you meant to cancel, or a renewal you didn’t want — you can ask Apple for a refund:

    1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com in any browser and sign in with your Apple Account.
    2. Tap I’d like to and choose Request a refund.
    3. Pick a reason, then select the charge you want refunded.
    4. Submit. Apple reviews the request and usually replies within 48 hours.

Refunds aren’t guaranteed, but accidental renewals and unused trials are commonly approved, especially on a first request.

Canceling Subscriptions Bought Outside the App Store

This is the single most common reason people “cancel” and still get charged. If you subscribed on the company’s own website or app rather than through Apple, canceling in iPhone Settings does nothing. Instead:

    • Streaming (Netflix, Disney+, Hulu): Cancel in your account settings on their website.
    • Music (Spotify direct): Manage it in your Spotify account online, not in iPhone Settings.
    • Anything with a credit card, not Apple: If the receipt came from the company and not Apple, cancel with that company.

A quick way to tell: if it shows up in Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, cancel it there. If it doesn’t, it’s billed elsewhere.

    Troubleshooting: Can’t Cancel a Subscription

    ProblemCauseFix
No “Cancel Subscription” buttonAlready canceled, or billed outside AppleCheck if it says “Expires on…”; if not in the list, cancel with the provider
Subscription isn’t listed at allBought on a company websiteCancel on that company’s own site/app
Canceled but still chargedCanceled after the renewal date, or wrong Apple AccountRequest a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com; confirm you’re signed into the right Apple Account
Signed in with the wrong accountMultiple Apple AccountsSign out and back in with the account that pays for the app
Can’t reach the Subscriptions screenSoftware glitchUse the App Store route, or restart your iPhone
Most “can’t cancel” cases are subscriptions billed outside Apple or the wrong account being used.

While you’re tightening up your accounts, it’s a good moment to review how to pay online safely and how to spot and avoid online scams. New to iPhone? Our beginner’s iPhone guide walks through the basics.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel a subscription on my iPhone?

Open Settings, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, select the subscription, and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the current billing period ends.

Why is there no Cancel Subscription button?

Either the subscription is already canceled (it will show an expiry date), or it was purchased outside the App Store, in which case you must cancel it on the provider’s own website.

If I cancel, do I lose access right away?

No. You keep full access until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, then it stops renewing.

I canceled but was still charged — what do I do?

Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. This usually happens when the cancelation came after the renewal date, or when you were signed into a different Apple Account.

How do I cancel a free trial before it charges me?

Cancel the trial at least 24 hours before it ends, using the same Settings > Subscriptions steps. You’ll keep trial access until it expires without being charged.

    Does canceling delete the app?

No. The app stays on your iPhone; only the paid subscription stops. You can keep using any free features.
