A week ago, Apple’s own retail staff were telling people not to bother. If you had no iPhone Duo pre-order, employees told MacRumors, you should not come to the store on launch day because you “will be disappointed.”

Then, on the eve of launch, Apple’s marketing chief said something rather different. “You know, we didn’t ship them all away during the pre-order, we have them available at the stores, we’re excited,” Greg Joswiak told TechRadar, adding that he would be at the Fifth Avenue store in New York on Friday morning and was “sure we’ll have some happy customers.”

So which is it? Both, as it turns out. Apple did hold back some iPhone Duo units for walk-in buyers, but only in 14 countries, only on launch day, and in numbers it will not disclose. Here is where you can actually walk in and buy one today, where you cannot, and how to give yourself the best shot if you are standing in line right now.

Quick answerApple Stores have limited iPhone Duo walk-in stock on launch day, Friday, October 23, in the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye and Singapore, plus some stores in Italy and Macao. There is no walk-in stock in France, mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand or the UAE, where buyers need an online pickup reservation. Apple says walk-in units are for launch day only and expects them to sell out quickly. Online orders now ship around January 25, 2027. Prices start at $1,999.

What Joswiak said, and what he did not

Joswiak’s comment was short, and it is worth reading carefully. He confirmed that Apple deliberately kept some units out of the pre-order pool so stores would have something to sell on Friday. He did not say how many, which stores, or whether there would be enough for more than the first handful of people in each line.

That fits Apple’s official statement from Wednesday, sent to MacRumors: “Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.” Apple added that, given what it called “extraordinary” demand, it expects supply to sell out quickly.

Put the three messages side by side and they line up better than they first appear.

The staff guidance was a warning about odds, not a promise of zero stock. Apple would rather have 200 people go home than 2,000 people show up for 30 phones. Joswiak’s comment simply confirms the 30 phones exist.

Where you can walk in today, and where you cannot

Apple split its launch markets into two groups. In one, stores sell a small number of unreserved units to whoever is in line. In the other, the only way to collect a phone in store is a pickup reservation made online, partly to control crowds and partly to frustrate scalpers.

What the first lines looked like

Because of the time zones, Asia-Pacific and Europe went first, and the early reports give US shoppers a preview. In Macao, hundreds of people were reported lining up at Apple Galaxy Macau two days before launch. In East London, a Digital Camera World writer arrived at the Stratford Apple Store at 6:30 a.m., before the mall itself had opened, and found staff taking reservations for unreserved units, with both colors and every storage tier available to book for collection later that day. That is one store and one morning, so do not read it as a national picture, but it shows how Apple is running the walk-in queue: you reserve a unit at the door, then come back for a set time.

In New York, early reports put the walk-in line at Apple Fifth Avenue at only a handful of people earlier this week, which says more about how loudly Apple warned people off than about demand. Joswiak’s own plan to be at Fifth Avenue on Friday morning suggests Apple expects a proper launch scene there.

How to improve your odds if you are going today

    Launch day checklist

    1. Go early, and go to a smaller store. Flagship stores attract the media and the crowds. A mall store with a quieter following may have a similar allocation and a shorter line.
    2. Be flexible on configuration. If your first choice is gone, take whatever storage and color is left. You can usually exchange within Apple’s 14 day return window once stock improves.
    3. Know your price ceiling. The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. Decide in advance whether you will pay $2,199 or $2,599 if that is all that remains.
    4. Bring the account you will activate with. Having your Apple Account, carrier details and payment method ready speeds up checkout and setup.
    5. Expect a purchase limit. Apple capped pre-orders at two per customer. Walk-in limits are typically as tight or tighter.
    6. Check Apple.com on Saturday. Apple says to check back on October 24 for pickup reservations. Returned and leftover units may surface there.

If you strike out: your next best options

Missing out today does not mean waiting until late January. Apple’s own online store is currently the slowest seller. As we found when we compared delivery dates across carriers and retailers, AT&T, Verizon and Best Buy were quoting December dates as of October 20, and Best Buy showed November 10 for some 512GB models. Higher storage tiers often arrive sooner because fewer people ordered them.

T-Mobile is worth a look if you were planning to switch anyway. Its opening offer takes up to $1,000 off the Duo with a trade-in and a new line on the Experience Beyond plan, or with a number port and no trade-in at all. TechRadar warns the offer may not survive past the initial pre-order phase, so if you want it, do not wait for stores to restock.

StorageUS priceStep upApple.com delivery (as of Oct 22)

    1TB$2,599+$400January 2027
    2TB$3,199+$600January 2027

One thing not to do: buy from a reseller or a “guaranteed pre-order” service. The Duo has already attracted bots and fake listings, and we covered how pre-order bots can end up costing more than the phone. A marked-up phone from a stranger also comes with no easy returns.

    Is it worth the line?

That depends on how much you want the first Apple foldable now rather than in a few months. Reviewers broadly love the hinge, the near invisible crease and the build. They disagree on battery life, and the phone gives up Face ID, a telephoto camera and the Action button compared with the iPhone 18 Pro, all at a higher price. Our iPhone Duo review roundup breaks down where critics agree and where their test results split.

The iPhone Duo in five numbersInner screen → 7.6 inches
    Outer screen → 5.4 inches
    Chip → A20 Pro
    Starting price → $1,999
Online wait → about 94 days from launch day

If none of those trade-offs bother you and you live near a store in one of the 14 walk-in countries, today is genuinely your best chance until the new year. If they do bother you, the long wait is a good excuse to let the first wave of buyers find the problems for you.

Bottom lineApple did keep some iPhone Duo units back for launch day, as Greg Joswiak says, but only in 14 countries plus parts of Italy and Macao, and only in small numbers that Apple itself expects to sell out fast. If you are in a walk-in market, go early, be flexible on storage and color, and use Apple’s 14 day window to swap later. If you miss out, carriers and Best Buy are quoting dates weeks ahead of Apple’s January estimate.
