BioWare is done. In a letter to staff on Wednesday, Electronic Arts announced it is closing the studio’s Edmonton office, its last remaining location, and canceling the early development work on the next Mass Effect game. The studio that made Baldur’s Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age confirmed the news itself in a short, painful social media post.

The closure is part of a bigger round of cuts at EA, roughly 400 jobs in total. For longtime RPG fans, though, the number that matters is 30, the years BioWare spent making games. Here is what was announced, how the studio ended up here, and where EA says it is putting its money instead.

    The short version

    • Announced: October 21, 2026, via a letter to EA staff and a BioWare statement
    • What closes: BioWare, including the Edmonton studio, the last one it had
    • What is canceled: the next Mass Effect game, which was in early development
    • Jobs: about 400 cuts across EA, roughly 3% of its workforce, including around 50 at BioWare
    • Also affected: a Sims project codenamed Project Lotus was canceled, and the Skate team at Full Circle is being downsized
    • Context: EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout, which left it carrying a large debt load

What EA and BioWare actually said

BioWare’s own statement was brief. “There is nothing easy about writing those words,” it read, adding that the focus right now is on the team “who put their hearts into these games” and on supporting one another through the transition. The post also confirmed that the next Mass Effect, the project that had only ever appeared in a few short teasers since its 2020 announcement, is canceled.

The internal letter came from EA’s chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber. According to Game Developer, they said the decisions followed a “hard look at the business” over the last several months, and that EA is making “deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth.” Bloomberg first reported the layoff numbers, and TechSpot, GameSpot and others line up on the core facts.

What has not been spelled out: severance details, and what happens to the Mass Effect and Dragon Age intellectual property. EA owns both, and nothing in the coverage so far says whether other EA studios will pick them up. Treat any claim about the future of those franchises as speculation for now.

BioWare accounts for a small slice of the total, which is part of what makes this feel so sharp. The studio had already shrunk drastically after Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and the roughly 50 people let go here were what remained.

    Thirty years, in one table

BioWare was founded in Edmonton in 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip. Its first release was a mech combat game, Shattered Steel, in 1997. Then came the run that defined computer RPGs for a generation.

    Why it ended this way

Nobody serious thinks one decision killed BioWare. The pattern, as former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah has described it, was a parent company that shifted toward multiplayer live-service games after Inquisition. Creative pivots, thin resources and the headaches of EA’s Frostbite engine pushed Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem into troubled development. Anthem sold around 5 million copies and was then shut down.

The Veilguard was supposed to be the comeback. It started life as a single-player game, was reworked into a live-service title, then was reworked back again. It launched in 2024 to better reviews than its predecessors, but EA said sales fell short of expectations. Some outlets put the figure at around 1.5 million copies, though that number is a report, not an EA statement. BioWare was cut down sharply afterward, with earlier reporting describing a studio that had roughly halved in size.

    The buyout shadow

The timing is hard to separate from EA’s $55 billion leveraged buyout by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. Debt figures vary by outlet, roughly $18 billion in some reports and about $20 billion in TechSpot’s. Either way, it is a heavy load, and reports say EA’s board promised investors around $700 million in annual cost savings. After the deal closed, EA staff told Game Developer they had only received vague reassurances, and one anonymous employee said it was hard to see how underperforming teams “wouldn’t be dissolved or sold off.”

That does not prove the buyout caused this closure. EA’s stated reason is a portfolio review. But BioWare’s closure was widely listed as one of the most feared outcomes of the deal, and it landed just months after it closed. Layoffs are becoming a familiar story across the industry, as seen when Funcom cut more staff and lost its CEO, and when Epic reportedly pushed developers toward an “AI first” workflow.

Where EA is putting its money instead

EA’s letter and the surrounding reporting make the direction clear: shooters, sports and The Sims. RPGs are out.

    What it means for fans

    • Existing games stay yours. Nothing announced affects ownership of the Mass Effect trilogy or Dragon Age games you already have.
    • A new Mass Effect is off the table for now. The project was canceled, not paused, and EA has not said who might revive the franchise.
    • Single-player RPGs at EA look unlikely. The company’s stated priorities are shooters, sports and Sims projects.
    • Look elsewhere for the genre. Larian, who made Baldur’s Gate III, is the obvious example of a studio carrying the torch BioWare once held.

    My take

The sad part is how predictable it feels. BioWare did not collapse overnight. It spent a decade being pulled in directions that did not suit it, and by the time it returned to what it did best, the studio was too small and the patience was gone. The people who wrote the best companion characters in games were let go by letter.

It is also worth being fair. EA says this is a business decision, and a studio that had not shipped a hit in years was always going to be a target for a company carrying that much debt. But a business decision can still be a loss, and this one is. A lot of players grew up with Shepard and the Warden, and the next chapter will not be written by the people who made them. If EA or anyone else says more about the future of those franchises, I will update this story.
