Sadie Adler survives Red Dead Redemption 2. She is one of the very few people who walks out of the Van der Linde gang’s collapse alive, and the last thing the game shows you is Sadie at John and Abigail Marston’s wedding in 1907, still bandaged from a knife wound, telling John she is leaving for South America. That is the short answer. The longer one is the best-written character arc Rockstar has ever shipped, and it runs from a cellar in a blizzard to a shootout on a snow-covered mountain eight years later.

Quick answer: Sadie Adler does not die in Red Dead Redemption 2. Arthur Morgan finds her hiding in her own cellar in Chapter 1 after the O’Driscoll Boys murder her husband Jake. She grows into the gang’s most fearless gunhand, breaks John Marston out of Sisika Penitentiary, and returns in the epilogue as a professional bounty hunter. In the final mission, American Venom, she is stabbed in the stomach at Mount Hagen but survives, sees Micah Bell killed, attends the Marstons’ wedding and then leaves for South America. Rockstar has never said what happened to her after that.
Spoilers ahead. This article covers the full plot of Red Dead Redemption 2, including Chapter 6, both epilogue parts and the ending. If you are mid-playthrough, stop at the quick answer above.

    Who Sadie Adler is

Sadie is not a Van der Linde gang member when the game starts. She is a rancher’s wife from the Ambarino mountains who happens to be in the wrong place when Dutch’s crew comes looking for shelter. Rockstar’s own character brief describes her as someone who “grew up raising harsh land in the mountains and can ride, hunt and shoot with the best of them,” which is the entire point of the character: the skills were always there, and grief is what unlocks them.

She is played by Alex McKenna, who did both the voice and the performance capture. McKenna’s work is a large part of why Sadie reads as a real person rather than a revenge archetype, and it is the reason she has stayed one of the most requested characters for a future Rockstar western.

Sadie is one of only a handful of major characters whose story Rockstar deliberately leaves open at the end of the game.

How Sadie is introduced: the cellar at Adler Ranch

The blizzard that opens the game pushes what is left of the gang into the mountains after the failed Blackwater ferry job. In the mission Outlaws from the West, Arthur rides out with Dutch van der Linde and Micah Bell to find food and shelter and they arrive at a homestead already occupied by O’Driscolls. They clear the house. Then Arthur hears something under the floor.

Sadie has been hiding in the cellar since the O’Driscolls raided the ranch and killed her husband Jake. She comes out fighting, and the first thing she does with her freedom is go at Micah with a knife when she catches him looting her home. In the struggle a lantern goes over and the house burns. Dutch takes her back to Colter because leaving her in the snow would kill her, and that is how a woman with no interest in outlaws ends up living with the most wanted gang in the country.

What happens to Sadie in each chapter

Sadie is the only character in the game who gets better as everything around her gets worse. Dutch decays, Arthur runs out of time, Micah’s rot spreads, and Sadie goes the other way. Here is the whole shape of it before the detail.

Sadie Adler’s arc, chapter by chapter
    • Chapter 1 · ColterFound in the cellar at Adler Ranch. Silent, wrapped in blankets, barely able to speak. Joins the gang because there is nowhere else to go.
    • Chapter 2 · Horseshoe OverlookGrieving in camp. Mary-Beth and Hosea look after her. Pushed into kitchen duty with Pearson, which she hates. Refuses to feed the O’Driscoll prisoner Kieran Duffy.
    • Chapter 3 · Clemens PointThe turning point. She tells Pearson she ran a ranch as an equal and will not be handed a knife for vegetables. Rides to Rhodes with Arthur, buys a gunbelt instead of provisions, and kills her first men when Lemoyne Raiders ambush them.
    • Chapter 4 · Shady BelleArmed and openly asking Dutch for a place on robberies. When the O’Driscolls raid the camp in Horsemen, Apocalypses, Arthur tells her to get inside. She refuses and fights.
    • Chapter 5 · Guarma and LakayNot on the boat. While Dutch’s group is stranded, Sadie holds the remnants of the gang together. When Arthur gets back she already has a plan to free John from Sisika Penitentiary and a hot air balloon hired to scout it.
    • Chapter 6 · Beaver HollowHer chapter. She breaks John out of prison, opens fire at Colm O’Driscoll’s hanging, wipes out Hanging Dog Ranch, kills the man who killed Jake, and is captured alongside Abigail in the last mission Arthur ever rides.
    • Epilogue · 1907A working bounty hunter. She pulls John back into the trade, tracks down Micah Bell, takes a knife to the stomach at Mount Hagen, survives, and leaves for South America.
Sadie appears in every chapter of the game except the Guarma section of Chapter 5, and in both parts of the epilogue.

    Chapters 1 and 2: grief

For the first two chapters Sadie barely functions. She sits apart from the camp, she does not want the food anyone brings her, and the gang treats her the way you treat someone who has just lost everything. Susan Grimshaw eventually puts her to work because idleness is worse, and Sadie takes it badly. Her contempt for Kieran Duffy, the captured O’Driscoll tied to a tree, is total. He wore the same colours as the men who killed her husband and that is the only fact about him she cares about.

A Former Rockstar Dev Says Another GTA 6 Delay Would Not Shock Him. Here Is Why That Matters

Chapter 3: the supply run that changes everything

In Further Questions of Female Suffrage, Arthur takes Sadie into Rhodes to get her out of camp. She spends the money on clothes she can ride in and a gunbelt rather than the supplies she was sent for, and on the way back Lemoyne Raiders jump the wagon. Sadie does not freeze, does not flinch and does not need to be told what to do. From that mission on she is armed, and the character you meet in Chapter 6 is fully visible for the first time.

The line that defines her: “Nobody’s taking nothing from me ever again.” Sadie’s arc is not really about revenge. It is about refusing to be a victim a second time, which is why she keeps going long after the O’Driscolls are dead.

    Chapter 4: earning her place

By Shady Belle, Sadie is asking Dutch to put her on jobs and telling anyone who will listen that she is done with camp life. When the O’Driscolls hit the house in Horsemen, Apocalypses, Arthur orders her to take cover. She ignores him and kills more men than most of the gang. Nobody argues about whether she belongs after that.

Chapter 5: the one who kept the gang together

Sadie is not on the boat to Guarma, which means she spends most of Chapter 5 doing the unglamorous work of keeping a leaderless gang alive. When Arthur finds her again in Icarus and Friends, she is in a Saint Denis saloon with a plan already in motion: John Marston is being held at Sisika Penitentiary, and she has hired an aeronaut named Arturo Bullard to take Arthur up in a hot air balloon to confirm it. The scouting run ends badly when O’Driscolls chase them down, but the location is confirmed.

    Chapter 6: Sadie’s chapter

Chapter 6 is where Sadie takes over the game. Four of its best missions are hers.

Visiting Hours. Sadie and Arthur row out to Sisika Penitentiary in the dark, kill the guards quietly and walk John Marston out of a prison island. It is the single most important thing anyone does for the Marston family in the whole game, and the reason Jack Marston grows up with a father.

Goodbye, Dear Friend. Colm O’Driscoll is finally hanged in Saint Denis, and Sadie cannot wait for the trapdoor. She opens fire into the crowd of O’Driscolls before the drop, which starts a running gun battle through the city. It is the clearest look at what her grief has turned into.

Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow I and II. The pair of missions named after her. Sadie and Arthur ride on Hanging Dog Ranch to finish the O’Driscolls for good. She asks Arthur to find one specific man, a heavyset one with a beard, because he is the one who killed Jake. When Arthur finds him, Sadie kills him herself, and she takes her time about it.

Red Dead Redemption. The mission that shares the game’s own title, and the last one Arthur rides. Agent Milton has taken Abigail to Van Horn. Sadie goes in first and is caught as well, so Arthur has to work from the lighthouse with a rifle and then fight his way inside. Milton, cornered, tells Arthur who the real informant in the camp has been all along: Micah. Abigail gets loose and shoots Milton dead. Arthur puts both women on horses and sends them away, and Sadie does not want to go. It is the last time she sees him.

If you want to see the most of Sadie: Chapter 6 is where she carries the game. Mrs. Sadie Adler, Widow I and II are built around her rather than Arthur, and Visiting Hours is her plan from start to finish.

What happens to Sadie in the epilogue

The epilogue jumps to 1907, eight years after the gang falls apart. John Marston is working under an assumed name at Pronghorn Ranch, trying to be a normal man. Sadie has gone the other way entirely: she has turned the thing she learned in Chapter 3 into a profession.

    Epilogue Part 1: Gainful Employment

Sadie turns up at Pronghorn at the end of the first epilogue and drags John back into bounty work for an afternoon. It is played mostly for warmth. Two survivors who have not seen each other in years get to be good at something together, and Sadie is visibly happier hunting men for money than she ever was in camp.

Epilogue Part 2: more bounties, then Micah

In the second epilogue she brings John more jobs, including A Quick Favor for an Old Friend and A Really Big Bastard, both of which are essentially two professionals working a contract while rival hunters try to take it off them. Then she finds the thread nobody else could.

Cleet, one of the two men who rode with Micah when he betrayed the gang, has been seen in Strawberry. That is where American Venom, the final mission of the game, begins.

    American Venom: Mount Hagen

Sadie, John and Charles Smith take Cleet at the gallows in Strawberry and get Micah’s location out of him at the edge of a cliff. It is not a gentle interrogation, and it tells you how far Sadie is willing to go. Micah is holed up at Mount Hagen with what is left of the Bell gang.

The ride up the mountain goes wrong immediately. A sniper puts Charles down and the three of them have to fight through the camp in deep snow. In the middle of that fight, in a cutscene you cannot prevent, one of Micah’s men gets inside Sadie’s guard and drives a knife into her stomach. Charles kills him. Sadie cannot go further, so John climbs to the cabin alone.

The standoff at the top is the one moment of the epilogue where everything from 1899 is in the room at once. John and Micah trade shots. Sadie, bleeding and refusing to stay behind, drags herself in and breaks the deadlock, and Micah grabs her and puts a gun to her head. Then Dutch van der Linde walks out of the snow.

Dutch says almost nothing. He looks at Micah for a long time, and then he shoots him, which frees Sadie. John empties his revolver into Micah to finish it. Dutch walks away down the mountain without a word to either of them, and that is the last anyone sees of him until 1911.

The one thing you cannot change: Sadie is invulnerable during story missions. She cannot be killed by enemy fire, she cannot bleed out, and no choice, honor level or gold medal requirement changes what happens to her at Mount Hagen. The stabbing is scripted and so is her survival.

    Does Sadie die in RDR2?

No. Sadie Adler is alive at the end of Red Dead Redemption 2, and she is one of a short list of gang-adjacent characters who make it that far. She is wounded in the final mission and she is on screen afterwards, bandaged but standing, at the Marston wedding.

This trips people up because the ending kills so many other people and because the stabbing is filmed like a death scene. It is not one. Compare the roll call:

Sadie is on the green list. Several of the survivors here, including Dutch, Bill and Javier, do not survive the events of the original Red Dead Redemption in 1911.

Counted at the end of the epilogue in 1907. Arthur Morgan dies of tuberculosis and his wounds at the end of Chapter 6.

Where does Sadie go at the end of RDR2?

South America. At the wedding at Beecher’s Hope, with the ranch built and Micah in the ground, Sadie tells John she is going south because there is bounty work down there and nothing keeping her here. Charles Smith is leaving too, heading north. The three people who did the most to get John his second chance all scatter in the same scene.

That is where Rockstar stops. There is no epilogue text card, no later cameo and no confirmed sighting of Sadie after 1907. She is not in the 1911-set original Red Dead Redemption, she is never mentioned by John or Abigail in that game, and she has not appeared in Red Dead Online either, although a rival bounty hunter from her epilogue jobs does turn up there. Her ending is deliberately unresolved, which is unusual for a Rockstar character and is exactly why she keeps coming up in every conversation about a future game.

Sony Picked Blackout Week to Remind Everyone the Games Are Licensed, Not Sold

Will Sadie be in Red Dead Redemption 3?

Nothing has been announced. Rockstar has never confirmed a third Red Dead game, and its public attention is entirely on the long run-up to GTA 6, a project that has already slipped more than once. A new western is not on any roadmap anyone outside the studio has seen.

What does exist is the case for her. Sadie is the only major survivor whose story was left open on purpose, she ends the game as a bounty hunter heading to a continent the series has never visited, and Alex McKenna has said in interviews that she would happily return to the role and would like to see a female lead carry a Rockstar western. The studio has also shown it is willing to build a game around a character introduced as a supporting player, which is precisely what Arthur Morgan was relative to John Marston. None of that is evidence, but it is why the theory refuses to die.

Worth remembering: Rockstar’s writing team is not the one that made RDR2. Dan Houser, who co-wrote it, left the company in 2020. Any future western would be written by a different room.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Sadie Adler die in RDR2?

No. Sadie survives the entire game. She is stabbed in the stomach during the final mission, American Venom, but the wound is scripted and so is her recovery. She appears afterwards at John and Abigail’s wedding at Beecher’s Hope, bandaged but alive, before leaving for South America.

Can you get Sadie killed during gameplay?

No. Sadie is an essential character and is invulnerable in every mission she appears in. Enemy fire will knock her down temporarily at most. Nothing you do, including honor level, gold medal objectives or letting her take hits, changes her fate at any point in the story.

    What happened to Sadie’s husband?

Jake Adler was murdered by the O’Driscoll Boys when they raided the Adler ranch in Ambarino, days before the game begins. Sadie survived by hiding in the cellar. In Chapter 6 she identifies his killer among the O’Driscolls at Hanging Dog Ranch and kills him herself.

Where does Sadie go after RDR2?

She tells John at the wedding that she is heading to South America to keep bounty hunting. Rockstar never shows what happens after that. She does not appear in the original Red Dead Redemption, set in 1911, and she is not a character in Red Dead Online, so her fate is officially unknown.

Is there a romance between Arthur and Sadie?

No, and the game is deliberate about it. Their relationship is built on trust rather than attraction. Sadie tells Arthur he is the only one of the gang she trusts, and Arthur treats her as a partner. Neither character ever suggests anything more than that.

    Who voices Sadie Adler?

Alex McKenna, an American actor who provided both the voice and the performance capture for the role. Her performance is widely credited with making Sadie one of the standout characters of the 2018 game, and she has spoken publicly about wanting to return if Rockstar ever revisits the series.

How old is Sadie in the epilogue?

Sadie is believed to have been born around 1870, which puts her in her late twenties during the main story in 1899 and around 37 by the time of the epilogue in 1907. The game never states her age directly, so this is inferred from in-game dialogue and Rockstar’s character material.

    The bottom line

Sadie Adler starts Red Dead Redemption 2 as a woman hiding under her own floorboards and ends it as the most competent person left standing. She survives the game, she survives Micah, and she is one of the few characters in Rockstar’s entire catalogue who gets a genuinely earned ending rather than a grave. The knife wound at Mount Hagen is the last thing the West takes from her, and she rides out anyway.

Where she goes after 1907 is the one question the game will not answer. South America is all she says, and until Rockstar decides otherwise, that is all there is.
