The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are the same phone in two sizes. They share the A19 Pro chip, 12 GB of memory, the full three camera 48MP Pro Fusion system, the same aluminum unibody and the same colors. The Pro Max gives you a 6.9 inch screen instead of 6.3 inches, about six extra hours of video playback and a 2TB storage option. In exchange it is 13.4 mm taller, 6.1 mm wider, 27 grams heavier and $100 more at every storage tier.
Quick answer
Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if battery life is your priority or you watch a lot of video: it is rated at up to 39 hours of video playback against 33 hours, and its screen has about 20 percent more area. Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a phone you can use with one hand and slip into any pocket. Cameras, speed and features are identical, so you lose nothing in photo quality by going smaller.
Apple stopped selling both models on September 9, 2026, when the iPhone 18 Pro arrived, so this is now a decision you make at a carrier, a retailer or on the refurbished and used market. Below are the full specs from Apple, a drawing of both phones to scale, the battery numbers side by side, and what each one costs today.

Size: how much bigger is the Pro Max?
The Pro Max is 13.4 mm taller and 6.1 mm wider, with exactly the same 8.75 mm thickness. That width is the number that matters in your hand. At 78 mm, most people cannot reach the far top corner with their thumb, while the 71.9 mm Pro is still a comfortable one handed phone. The extra 27 grams also shows up when you hold the phone above your face in bed.

What you get for that size is screen. The 6.9 inch panel has roughly 20 percent more area than the 6.3 inch one, at the same 460 pixels per inch, so text, video and games are simply bigger rather than sharper. If you read a lot on your phone, edit photos or watch video on flights, that extra area is noticeable every single day.

Battery life: the real reason to go Max
A bigger body holds a bigger battery, and this is the one area where the Pro Max wins outright. Apple rates it at up to 39 hours of video playback and 35 hours of streamed video, against 33 and 30 hours for the Pro. The cell inside the US eSIM model is about 5,088 mAh against 4,252 mAh, roughly 20 percent larger, according to EU energy label filings.

In real use the 17 Pro gets most people through a full day. The Pro Max is the one that regularly ends a heavy day with charge to spare, and for light users it can stretch into a second day. Both charge equally fast: 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a 40W or stronger adapter. For measured results across the whole lineup, see our iPhone 17 battery life breakdown.
Cameras and performance: identical
There is no camera reason to pick one over the other. Both have the same 48MP Fusion main camera, 48MP ultra wide and 48MP 4x telephoto with the 8x optical quality option, the same 18MP Center Stage front camera and the same video features, including 4K at 120 fps, ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2. Our iPhone 17 Pro camera guide covers every lens and its test scores, and it applies to the Pro Max word for word.
Performance is the same too. Both run the A19 Pro with a 6 core GPU and 12 GB of memory, and both have the vapor chamber.
Price today: what each one costs
At launch, the Pro Max cost exactly $100 more at each shared storage tier, and it was the only model with a 2TB option at $1,999. Since Apple stopped selling both on September 9, 2026, prices depend on where you buy:
- Carriers and retailers still had stock after the iPhone 18 Pro launch, with offers such as AT&T’s up to $1,100 off with an eligible trade in. Those deals usually pay out as monthly bill credits.
- Trade in values at Apple in September 2026 were up to $885 for a 17 Pro Max and up to $785 for a 17 Pro, which roughly sets the floor for used prices.
- New alternative: the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 and the 18 Pro at $1,199. See our iPhone 18 Pro Max price guide for every tier.
Worth knowing
Apple’s own trade in values kept the same $100 gap as the launch prices, but individual listings vary a lot. If a used 17 Pro Max in good condition costs only a little more than a 17 Pro, the bigger battery is the better buy, as long as the size suits you. Check Battery Health in Settings before you pay.
Which one should you buy?
iPhone 17 Pro
Best for one handed use, smaller pockets and anyone who finds big phones tiring. You give up nothing in cameras or speed, and it is the cheaper of the two.
iPhone 17 Pro Max
Best for battery life, video watching, reading and photo editing. Six more hours of rated video playback and a 6.9 inch screen, at the cost of 27 grams and a wider grip.
Our take
Pick by your hands and your battery anxiety, not by the spec sheet. If you have ever run out of charge before bedtime, get the Pro Max. If you mostly use your phone in one hand on the go, the 17 Pro is the more pleasant phone to live with and loses nothing that shows up in your photos.
