The Pixel A series has always been the same bargain. You get Google’s camera processing and Google’s software support at roughly half the price of the flagship, and in exchange you accept a slower chip, a plainer screen and a shorter list of features. For eight generations that trade has been the best value in Android, and the only real question each year has been how much Google decided to hold back.
Last year the answer was uncomfortable. The Pixel 10a shipped with the Tensor G4, the chip from two Pixel generations earlier, while the Pixel 10 moved on to the Tensor G5. It was the first time the A series had fallen a full generation behind, and it made the phone feel less like a discounted Pixel and more like a leftover one.
The first real look at the Pixel 11a arrived on September 29 by way of CAD based renders from OnLeaks, published alongside Android Headlines, and the design news is that there is no design news. The phone looks almost exactly like the Pixel 10a. What changed is underneath, and one of those changes fixes a complaint Pixel owners have been making for the better part of five years.
What leaked, and how much to trust it
Two separate streams feed this story. The design comes from OnLeaks, who works from factory CAD files and has one of the better records in the business for shape and dimensions. The internal specifications come from earlier leaks that surfaced over the summer, and those are the ones that could still shift before a spring launch.
| Claim | Detail | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Design and dimensions | 153.46 by 72.35 by 9mm, flush camera module, shorter oval than the 10a | CAD based, usually accurate |
| Tensor G6 | Same generation as the Pixel 11 series | Multiple sources agree |
| MediaTek M90 modem | Replaces the Samsung modem lineage | Reported, and consistent with the Pixel 11 |
| Display brightness | 2,250 nits HDR, 3,350 nits peak, up from 3,000 on the 10a | Reported |
| Battery | 4,870mAh minimum, down from 5,000mAh | Reported, from a rating label |
| Selfie camera | New sensor, possibly the 10.5MP unit from the Pixel 11 | Early leak, less certain |
| Price and date | Around $500, spring 2027 on Google’s usual A series schedule | Expectation, not a leak |
| Anything from Google | Nothing at all | Zero |
A spring 2027 phone leaking in September 2026 is early by A series standards, which is worth keeping in mind. Component choices at this stage are usually locked, but final clock speeds, memory configurations and pricing are not.
The chip gap closes, after one very awkward year
The A series has normally shipped the same Tensor generation as the flagship it follows. The Pixel 7a had the Tensor G2, the Pixel 8a had the G3, the Pixel 9a had the G4. Then the Pixel 10a arrived still carrying the G4 while the Pixel 10 had moved to the G5, and the pattern broke.
Because the Pixel 10a stood still, the Pixel 11a gets to take two steps. Going from the G4 to the G6 skips a whole generation of process improvements and architectural changes, and it should be the largest year over year performance increase the A series has ever had. It also matters for what the phone can run, not just how fast it runs it.
Google increasingly gates its on device features behind the newer Tensor generations rather than behind price. When offline Live Translate arrived, it landed on only three Pixels, because the models running language models locally need the memory bandwidth and the newer accelerator to do it without ruining battery life. An A series phone on a current generation chip has a real chance of receiving those features at launch instead of never.
The modem swap is the upgrade that will actually change your day
Here is the part that deserves more attention than the chip. Tensor phones have used Samsung designed modems since the first one, and those modems have been the source of the most persistent complaints about Pixels: battery draining while the phone sits idle, weak grip on a marginal signal, and calls dropping in places where other phones on the same carrier hold on. Plenty of people who like everything else about Pixels have switched away over exactly this.
The Pixel 11 series moved to MediaTek’s M90, and Google has publicly described that modem as faster and more power efficient. The Pixel 11a is reported to get the same part.
Ignore the headline speed figure. No consumer network anywhere delivers 12 Gbps, and you would hit your data cap in about four seconds if one did. The interesting claims are the boring ones, because idle drain and weak signal handling are precisely where Tensor phones have lost to everything else in their price bracket.
A smaller battery that will probably last longer
The leaked rating puts the minimum capacity at 4,870mAh, against 5,000mAh on the Pixel 10a. On its own that reads like a cut, and for once the pessimistic reading is probably wrong.
Battery life is capacity divided by how fast the phone burns through it. The Tensor G6 is built on a newer, smaller process than the G4, which means less energy spent per unit of work, and the modem swap targets the single largest source of unnecessary drain on these phones. A 2.6 percent smaller cell paired with a meaningfully more efficient chip and a meaningfully more efficient radio should come out ahead.
Should is doing some work in that sentence. Chip makers frequently spend efficiency gains on higher clock speeds instead of longer runtime, and Google has a track record of Tensor chips running hotter and throttling harder than their specifications suggest. This is a reasonable expectation, not a promise.
What did not change at all
The renders show a phone with the same flat sided shape, the same flush camera module and the same absence of a protruding camera bar. Dimensions come in at 153.46 by 72.35 by 9mm, which is within rounding of the Pixel 10a. The only visible difference is that the camera oval is shorter and rounder than last year’s.
The cameras themselves are reportedly untouched: a 48MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide, with no telephoto, which has been the A series arrangement for several generations. Given that Pixel photo quality has always been driven more by processing than by sensors, a newer chip running newer image pipelines may improve output without a single hardware change. The selfie camera does get attention for the first time since the Pixel 7a, reportedly moving to the 10.5MP sensor from the base Pixel 11.
| Pixel 10a | Pixel 11a (leaked) | |

The security chip is a quieter upgrade than it sounds
The leak lists a Titan M3, which is the part Google introduced on the Pixel 11 series. It handles the secure boot chain, key storage and the tamper resistant side of biometrics, and its headline feature this generation is support for post quantum cryptography. We went through what that defends against and why Google is building it now, and the short version is that it protects against an attack that requires a computer nobody has built yet.
That sounds like a reason to shrug, and it is not, because of how the attack works. Encrypted data captured today can be stored and decrypted later once the hardware exists. Anything you want to stay private for a decade needs protection that was designed before the machine arrives. Putting that chip in a $500 phone rather than reserving it for the flagship is the right call, even if nobody will ever notice it working.
When you can buy it, and what it should cost
Google has kept the A series on a consistent rhythm, announcing in spring after the flagship has been out for months. That points to a spring 2027 launch. The Pixel 10a held the line at $499, and the expectation is that the Pixel 11a lands around the same place, though that assumption is doing a lot of work in a year when memory and storage prices have climbed across the board.
If you are shopping now, the Pixel 10a is the phone in stores, and it will get cheaper as this one approaches. The calculation is unusually clear this time. The Pixel 10a is a good phone carrying a chip that was two generations old at launch and a modem with a bad reputation. The Pixel 11a fixes both of those things and changes almost nothing else. Anyone who was on the fence about the 10a specifically because of the chip has a concrete reason to wait, and anyone who wanted a bigger camera upgrade does not, because it is not coming.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Pixel 11a coming out?
Google has not announced anything. Based on the A series pattern of spring announcements, spring 2027 is the expectation. The September 2026 leak is unusually early for this line.
Is the Tensor G6 a big upgrade over the Tensor G4?
It should be the largest generational jump the A series has had, because it skips the Tensor G5 entirely. The Pixel 10a stayed on the G4 while the Pixel 10 moved to the G5, so the 11a is making up two steps at once.
Why does the modem change matter so much?
Samsung designed modems in Tensor phones have been blamed for years of idle battery drain, weak signal handling and dropped calls. Moving to MediaTek’s M90, the same part used in the Pixel 11 series, targets the complaint people actually have about owning a Pixel.
Is a smaller battery bad news?
Probably not. The drop is from a 5,000mAh minimum to 4,870mAh, around 2.6 percent, while the chip moves to a newer process and the modem should draw less power when idle. Net battery life is likely to improve, though that will need real testing to confirm.
Does the Pixel 11a get a telephoto camera?
No. The leak keeps the 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide with no third lens, which is consistent with every A series phone so far.
What colors will it come in?
Four are listed: Obsidian in black, Fog in silver, Olive in green and Frost, a purple shade that brings the color back to the lineup.
Will it get the same software support as the flagship?
Google has been giving A series phones the same seven year update commitment as its flagships, and there is no indication that changes here. Feature parity is the looser part, since some on device features are limited by hardware generation rather than by policy.
The bottom line
The Pixel 11a is the least visually interesting leak of the season and one of the more meaningful ones. The design is recycled, the rear cameras are untouched, the RAM has not moved and the battery is fractionally smaller. On a spec sheet comparison it looks like a rounding error.
What it actually does is repair the two things that made the Pixel 10a hard to recommend without a caveat. The chip is current instead of two years stale, which matters for on device AI features that Google now gates by silicon generation rather than by price. And the modem finally comes from somebody other than Samsung, which addresses the longest running complaint about Pixel ownership. Those are not the changes that make for exciting renders. They are the changes you would feel every day.
