The Beats 360 Match the AirPods Max on Almost Everything, for $200 Less

Apple has spent five years letting the AirPods Max sit at the top of its headphone lineup with almost nothing underneath it. That gap is now filled, and it is filled by a pair of Beats that costs $200 less while copying most of what made the expensive ones worth buying.

The Beats 360 landed on September 22 at $349.99 and reached shelves two days later. They borrow the AirPods Max headband, they beat it on battery life, and they weigh noticeably less. They also leave out two things that anyone upgrading from a pair of AirPods Max will notice inside the first hour.

    The short version

    • The Beats 360 cost $349.99. The AirPods Max 2 cost $549, a gap of $199.01
    • Battery life is the clearest win: 32 hours with noise cancelling and Spatial Audio both on, or up to 40 hours with cancelling off, against 20 hours on the AirPods Max 2
    • They are 10.39 ounces, roughly a fifth of a pound lighter than Apple’s flagship
    • Noise cancelling is rated at 1.75x the total reduction of the Beats Studio Pro, which puts it near, not at, AirPods Max territory
    • You lose automatic pause when you take them off and any wired listening option, which also means no lossless
    • You gain IPX4 sweat resistance, swappable ear and headband cushions, and Android Fast Pair

    Where the $199 actually goes

Price gaps in Apple’s lineup usually buy you a chip, and this one is no exception. The AirPods Max 2 run a pair of H2 processors, one in each ear cup, the same silicon family that powers the AirPods Pro. The Beats 360 use custom Beats silicon instead.

On paper that sounds like the kind of compromise that guts the experience. In practice Beats wired the important ecosystem features in anyway. Automatic switching between devices signed into the same Apple account works. Siri works. Find My works. Adaptive EQ, which adjusts the sound to the seal your ears actually make, works on iOS 27. What you do not get is the tight, low-latency behavior the H2 enables for things like conversation awareness.

The two omissions that matter more are simpler than a chip. There is no wear detection, so lifting a cup off your ear does not pause your music. And there is no wired mode at all, which rules out the 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless playback the AirPods Max 2 can do over USB-C. If you listen to lossless files from a laptop, that is not a small footnote. If you stream from a phone, you will never notice.

    The full spec picture

Laid out side by side, the pattern is clear. Beats won the practical categories and Apple kept the audiophile ones.

The row worth staring at is water resistance. The AirPods Max have never carried a rating, which is why plenty of owners quietly stopped wearing them to the gym. An IPX4 rating means the Beats 360 survive splashes and sweat, and that single line moves them out of the desk-and-commute category and into the one where you actually use headphones every day.

Noise cancelling, and what 1.75x really means

Beats quotes the noise cancelling as 1.75 times the total reduction of the Beats Studio Pro. That is a comparison against its own older model, not against Apple’s flagship, and the two are not the same claim.

The improvement comes from three places at once: better passive isolation from the redesigned cups, repositioned microphones, and more processing. Reviewers who have had them on a plane describe the result as close to the AirPods Max rather than equal to it, with the gap showing up most in the mid frequencies where voices live. Low rumble, which is what most people buy cancelling for, is handled well.

Apple’s own figure for the AirPods Max 2 is 1.5 times more effective cancelling than the first generation, which tells you both companies are now describing improvements against their own back catalogue rather than against each other. If you want a cross-brand read, the Bose and Sony flagships still trade the crown between them. Our take on how Sony’s WH-1000XM6 handles the same job is a useful reference point, because Sony wins on raw cancelling and loses on everything Apple-flavored.

The design borrows more than it invents

Beats did not try to look like Beats here. The headband is a rounded band with a cushion that attaches underneath, which is the AirPods Max approach rather than the padded arc of the Studio Pro. The cups are lighter, the clamping force is gentler, and several reviewers have called them more comfortable over long sessions than Apple’s own flagship.

That comfort is partly a weight story and partly a materials story. The AirPods Max use a steel frame and aluminium cups, which is why they feel expensive and why they press down on you after two hours. The Beats 360 trade that for plastic and get three ounces back.

The swappable cushions are the underrated part. Ear pads on every pair of over-ear headphones eventually flake, and on most of them that is the end of the product. Being able to replace both the ear cushions and the headband cushion turns a three-year purchase into a five-year one. It also means you can change the look, which is clearly the point of offering Cloud, Sky, Black and Pink.

Which pair is actually for you Pick the column that matches how you listen, not the one with the bigger number Beats 360, $350 Long flights and long days Workouts and sweat Cushions you can replace An iPhone and an Android Comfort over materials Best value of the three AirPods Max 2, $549 Wired lossless from a Mac Pause when you lift a cup Full H2 chip features Steel and aluminium build Deepest Apple integration Best for Apple-only setups Sony or Bose flagship Strongest raw cancelling Deeper EQ control Multipoint across brands No Apple account tricks Priced around the Max Best for pure quiet

    The Apple ecosystem tax, recalculated

For years the argument for buying Apple headphones over Sony or Bose came down to the small conveniences: they pair instantly, they follow you from phone to laptop, they show up in Find My when you leave them in a hotel. Those conveniences were locked behind the $549 price, and that was the whole point of the lineup.

The Beats 360 unlock most of them at $350. That reframes the question. You are no longer choosing between Apple convenience and a sane price, you are choosing between Apple convenience with a lighter build and Apple convenience with a metal one. Our head to head comparison of the Apple, Sony, Bose and Sonos flagships came down on the AirPods Max largely because of that ecosystem behavior, and most of what carried that verdict is now available for $200 less.

Apple Intelligence Has a Daily Limit. Apple Will Not Say What It Is.

Sonos has also moved into the gap with a set of over-ear headphones priced between the Beats and the AirPods Max, which is a reminder that the $350 to $450 band is now the most crowded part of the market. If you are still weighing earbuds against full-size cans, our current wireless earbuds roundup covers the smaller end of the same decision.

    What to take from this

    • At $349.99, the Beats 360 are the value pick in Apple’s headphone lineup. They keep automatic switching, Siri, Find My and Adaptive EQ while cutting $199 off the flagship price
    • Battery life is not close. 32 hours with cancelling on, or up to 40 with it off, against 20 hours on the AirPods Max 2
    • Two omissions decide it. No wear detection and no wired mode, which also means no lossless playback
    • IPX4 and swappable cushions change how you use them. These are the first Apple-branded over-ears you can take to a gym without wincing
    • Noise cancelling is close, not equal. The 1.75x figure is measured against the Studio Pro, not against Apple’s flagship

The honest read is that Apple has built its own mid-range competitor and priced it well enough to make the flagship look like a specialist product. If you need lossless over a cable or you want the music to stop when you pull a cup off your ear, the AirPods Max 2 still earn the difference. Everyone else just got a $200 discount on almost the same experience.
