OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has introduced new features aimed at promoting healthier usage habits, preventing emotional overreliance, and supporting mental well-being among its users. The changes focus on encouraging breaks, improving responses to sensitive topics, and reducing potential negative impacts of prolonged interaction with the AI.

One of the key updates is the addition of reminder prompts that suggest users take a pause after extended use of the application. According to OpenAI, the goal is not to maximize the user’s time spent on ChatGPT but to ensure that interactions are productive and balanced. The company emphasizes that the chatbot is designed to help people achieve their objectives—whether learning something new, solving a problem, or making progress on a task—and then return to their daily lives.

In parallel, OpenAI is collaborating with over 90 medical professionals across 30 countries to improve ChatGPT’s ability to recognize signs of mental or emotional distress, stress, and other sensitive situations. This partnership aims to refine how the AI handles delicate conversations, offering more thoughtful and supportive responses when users seek guidance on personal or difficult matters.

An example given is when a user asks emotionally charged questions, such as whether they should end a romantic relationship. Instead of directly influencing the decision, ChatGPT will be designed to help the user weigh the pros and cons, encouraging independent reflection and reducing the risk of impulsive decisions based solely on AI suggestions. This approach is meant to prevent scenarios where AI advice could unintentionally lead to significant real-life consequences.

The updates also include safeguards against fostering emotional dependency or generating misleading impressions that the AI has personal feelings or consciousness. OpenAI is enhancing its models to avoid producing outputs that might reinforce illusions or encourage users to form one-sided emotional attachments to the system.

To further guide the development of these features, OpenAI is establishing an advisory group consisting of experts in mental health, youth development, and human-computer interaction. This group will provide ongoing input to ensure ChatGPT remains a safe and responsible tool, particularly for vulnerable users.

These changes reflect OpenAI’s broader commitment to responsible AI deployment—ensuring that ChatGPT remains a helpful assistant without encouraging excessive use or unhealthy forms of engagement. Still talking about safety, it’s important to remember that the popular chatbot was featured recently in bad news mentioning the leak of several conversations that could be accessible via Google search.
