When Windows 11 can’t find your printer, the cause is almost always one of four things: a connection problem, a stuck print service, a missing or broken driver, or a network setting that hides the printer from your PC. Step 1: Check the connection first
It sounds obvious, but a loose cable or a printer that joined the wrong network causes a large share of these cases. Go through the connection type you use:

Step 3: Restart the Print Spooler and run the troubleshooter
The Print Spooler is the Windows service that handles every print job. When it hangs, printers can vanish or show as offline.
- Press Windows key + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler, right click it and choose Restart.
Next, run Microsoft’s automated printer troubleshooter. On Windows 11 it lives in the Get Help app rather than the old troubleshooter list in Settings. Open Get Help from the Start menu, search for printer troubleshooting, and follow the prompts. It checks the spooler, the connection and common driver problems for you.
Step 4: Fix or reinstall the driver
A missing or corrupted driver can stop Windows from recognizing a printer that is clearly on and connected.

- If no update is found, choose Uninstall device, restart the PC, and let Windows reinstall it.
- Finally, open Settings, Windows Update and install any optional driver updates listed for your printer.

Step 5: Check network discovery and protected print mode
Two newer settings can quietly hide a printer.
Network profile. Windows blocks device discovery on networks marked as public. Open Settings, Network & internet, select your WiFi or Ethernet connection and set Network profile type to Private network for your home network. A VPN can also block local devices, so pause it while you add the printer.
Windows protected print mode. This optional Windows 11 security setting allows only the built in Windows print system, which is designed for Mopria certified printers. Mopria is an industry standard that most new printers support, and compatible models show a shield icon in Printers & scanners. When the mode is switched on, printers that rely on third party drivers are uninstalled and cannot be used. To check, go to Printers & scanners, scroll to Printer preferences and look at Windows protected print mode. If it is on and your older printer vanished, select Turn off and add the printer again. On a work PC managed by an IT department, you may need an administrator to change it.
