After eight years of silence, Bethesda has finally told us what the next Elder Scrolls game is called. It is The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, and Todd Howard dropped the name at the very end of a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios on November 3. There is no trailer, no release window and no gameplay. What we do have is a title, a logo, a lot of sand and a strong hint about where Tamriel’s next adventure takes place.

Here is everything that is actually confirmed, what the title tells us about the setting, and why the studio itself says not to get your hopes up for a date.

    The short version

    • The name: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, revealed on November 3, 2026
    • Where it was shown: The closing moments of Bethesda Game Studios’ 40th anniversary video, narrated by Todd Howard
    • The likely setting: Hammerfell, home of the Redguards, where Sentinel is a major city and kingdom
    • Release date: None. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says it is still more than two years away
    • Studio message: “Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more…”

    How the reveal happened

The anniversary video looked back at Bethesda’s earliest days, starting with its first game, Gridiron, and moving through the Elder Scrolls games that turned the studio into a household name. As it wrapped up, Howard said the team was looking forward as well as back. “Everybody’s always asking about Elder Scrolls 6,” he said, “and we thought, hey, given the moment, what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called.”

That was it. PC Gamer and Shacknews both point out that the reveal was only a title and a logo. Bethesda followed up on social media with a message thanking fans for 40 years of shared memories, adding that it feels great to finally reveal “the name and location.”

Why Hammerfell is the safe bet

The title does most of the talking. Sentinel is one of the major kingdoms of Hammerfell, the Redguard homeland, and the capital of the Alik’r Desert. The sand around the logo points the same way. PC Gamer also highlights a line of in-universe text shown after the reveal: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.” The quote comes from Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, in the year 4E 206. According to UESP, that places the game at least five years after the events of Skyrim.

This is a big shift from the mountain flyover in the original 2018 teaser, although the Alik’r Desert does border the Dragontail Mountains, so snow may not be gone for good. Shacknews adds that the Redguards have shown up in plenty of lore and quests across the series but have never had a full adventure set in their own homeland.

    Where the game stands today

Bethesda’s own words are blunt. The studio says development continues and that it will be “some time” before more is shown. PC Gamer’s take is that “some time” is a polite way of saying “a long time,” and that is hard to argue with. The game was announced at E3 2018, more than eight years ago. For scale, that is roughly how long Bethesda needed to make Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and its two expansions, plus a pair of spinoffs.

On timing, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said the game is “still more than two years away” and later clarified that he knows the time frame the studio is targeting. That lines up with reports from earlier this year that Microsoft’s July layoffs, which reportedly hit more than 50 people at Bethesda Game Studios, could push the earliest release to 2028.

A few smaller details are floating around too. Howard confirmed in a December interview that Sentinel will have more trees than Skyrim, and Bethesda previously confirmed that YouTuber Shirley “Skyrim Grandma” Curry would appear as a character. Neither tells us much about the game, but they are a reminder that the project is a long way into development.

A tease that had been building for months

The name did not come completely out of nowhere. Reports earlier this autumn already pointed to “Sentinel” and a Hammerfell setting, and PC Gamer noted that a Starfield easter egg had hinted at it. In August, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased the game after seeing a live playthrough, writing the subtitle as a string of eight asterisks. Bethesda then repeated the same joke. Sentinel has eight letters, so in hindsight the puzzle was solvable.

Why the timing matters for Xbox

The reveal lands at an awkward but interesting moment for Microsoft. Bethesda has been central to Xbox’s strategy since the ZeniMax purchase, and the past few months have been rough for the wider group. We covered Xbox’s latest revenue figures, the deadline hanging over Arkane Lyon, and the decision to put Obsidian under Bethesda’s control for a new Fallout game. Against that backdrop, putting a name on the biggest RPG in the pipeline is a confident move, even without a date to go with it.

    What to watch next

    • A first trailer: Bethesda says it is not ready to share more, so do not expect footage soon.
    • Platform news: Whether Sentinel comes to PlayStation 5 is still unanswered, and Xbox has not said.
    • Skyrim’s anniversary: November 11 is the game’s anniversary, and Bethesda likes to mark dates like that, though nothing is promised.
    • Studio health: Hiring news and any further layoffs at Bethesda Game Studios will say more about the timeline than any teaser.

    My take

It is a small reveal, but a satisfying one. A title and a logo cannot tell us how the game plays, yet Hammerfell is a genuinely fresh setting for the series, and a desert province gives the art team a very different canvas than Skyrim’s snow and pine. The honest part of the news is Bethesda’s own admission that the wait continues. I would plan on 2028 or later, and treat everything before then as a bonus.
